we seem to be having an issue with our sound becoming 'grainy' and/or 'skipping/buffering'... this is our 10th ae1 from IMAX and not thrilled at all!

Yeah, the AE-1 was a pretty OK camera, but a bit lacking in the sound department.
If I'm not mistaken, the AE-1 is the thing which replaced DTAC as the digital playback unit for the IMAX soundtrack.
I guess when the thing is skipping or buffering there is a synchronization problem between the projector and the AE-1. Instead of just replacing the AE-1, did they bother to have a look at the time code reader on the projector side?

I used to repair them when I worked at Canon factory service in the late 70's-early 80's. Also A-1's and a bunch of optics. Interestingly almost no one at Canon owned Canon cameras. Most owned Nikons, and a few of the guys were true camera collectors that owned everything under the sun. This picture was taken with a Mamiya 645 with 24mm fisheye.

Why do they think fish see with barrel distortion? Why is it called a fish-eye lens? Why not a bow-legged lens? Or a bowl-eye lens?
When you think about it, it is fascinating to try to image how fish and some birds actually see with those independent eyes wandering all over the place -- they're are always seeing two images which are not converged. Hard to imagine how they process that in those pea-sized brains -- seems a lot harder than just converging two images into a single 3D image.

Well, what your brain is "seeing", isn't so much just a bunch of "dots" with varying color and intensities, but a constructed image. What's happening in our brains is actually still barely achievable using today's supercomputers.
We know, through the simple application of optical illusions, that what your brain is seeing, isn't the "real world", but an interpreted version. It's actually more like what your brain expects to see, combined with what it actually sees.
Fish and birds will also construct their version of the "real world", based on their sensory inputs, so I doubt that those animals see the world as a constant stream of two individual images.

I think a lot of people I've seen over the years also seem to have independent movement between their eyes.
