I read on another topic that someone had the manuals for this machine, but needed permission to post it.

It was easy enough to find the manual for the Christie Cine-IPM2K (input modules and conversion), but the actual projector is proving troublesome.

The operation and setup manuals are normally inside the pedestal door.

Can anyone provide a link to this manual (CP2000) or is it really that *hush*hush*?

Thanks,
Andrés

No, Not hush-hush.. I have all the Christie manuals... you just need to attend the Christie training class to be able to get them... they are on a CD-ROM.

Well, I have a CP2000 manual and I didn't go through their training. [Roll Eyes]

Well, it makes it really easy to distrute them because they are on cd-rom digital available. Guess PDF. Or are you not permitted to distrubte them? Stupid in that case.
What's wrong with making this stuff available on the website (or perhaps on a for registered owners section only).

Patrick,

Why not just ask Tim... he has one...

So? Is anyone going to make a copy available for me? Let me explain my situation. I have one Cp2000 under my wing located 5000km. north of me, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. My guys there need assistance and I can´t give it to them without the manual. That´s all.

Thanks,
Andrés

You know, I thought that hard copy was the only one I had, but I just found a ton of .pdfs of the CP-2000 installation, wiring diagrams, and service bulletins...

HOWEVER, they are in a file folder marked CONFIDENTIAL, and since someone upstream entrusted me with them to begin with, I will not break that pact.

You probably should just contact Christie for SUPPORT.

So they consider the instruction manual for the unit to be confidential? That's pathetic.

Shouldn't it be in the manufacturer's best interest to help its customers install and operate its products properly? What are they trying to hide? If the manual is any good, it should be entirely usable without the training class.

I feel the same way about the Kinoton manuals...although they are actually pretty useless, so it's less of a problem that they don't want them posted or distributed.

Some of these manufacturers really need to take a look at the Super Simplex manual. It has excellent diagrams and descriptive text, and explains installation, operation, maintenance, and common repairs clearly and concisely. None of the manuals for new equipment compare. The CP50 manual is also excellent.

[Confused]

Scott, the installation and service info has all the internal diagrams and stuff - and that is what was given me in confidence. The User's Guide might be okay, but I don't have that in .pdf form.

I'm with you, though. I've always been a proponent of thorough documentation and service literature. And, if the equipment's been patented, what's the big deal? [Roll Eyes] Unless they just want absolute and total control over the service, then I can see why they might not want it to get around.

Like everything else, though, in a short time it'll be all over the place and everyone will have copies.

Here is the deal...for the Christie manuals, like Kinoton, they are on a secure web site...as such the Manufacturer want to control their distribution, for whatever reason, that IS the priviledge of actually owning the copyright. Breaking that confidence by a dealer or service organization could be grounds for terminating that confidence. As such, I completely agree with Tim...then again, I wouldn't have made so many posts about having the manual that I couldn't distribute.

BTW Scott, the Kinoton manuals have gotten better with each revision, their service manuals (rarely seen) do indeed give the talented installer a great deal of information though it is not spoon fed.

As to Dolby, you'll note that their earlier manuals (CP200 and earlier) were definately very informative...however note, since the CP55, they were near useless except for the totally ignorant...with the exception of the cryptic signal flow and pinouts. It used to be that Dolby's patents and copyrights were enough to enforce their ideas and designs...nowadays, it is just easier to to withhold the information to begin with.

I do agree however, if it were "MY" company, I wouldn't mind user manuals being free and available to all to download...I can definately see restrictions on technical/service type manuals that can cause more harm than good. Generally, those that really need them can get them through the proper channels.

At the risk of talking about it even further, [Wink] if you follow my posts, you'll see the progression of my thoughts. When I first mentioned it, I knew I had the hard copy of the user manual - but didn't realize I had the confidential stuff (or that it even WAS confidential) until yesterday.

It was at that point I realized someone had given me those back when I first started working for Strong, with the understanding that they were "eyes only".

Otherwise, I wouldn't have said a word.

I finally got the manual from Christie, through registering on their web site. I never would have thought that getting it that way would have been faster than through Film Tech. I was dissapointed.
Now that the issue is over, I want to tell you that I wouldn´t have broken confidence. The reasons why I needed the manual were true (and verifiable) and I was not going to sell or lend the manual in any way.
I know you guys don´t know me. But I thought there was a certain code of ethics between techs, specially between techs registered here. I was obviously wrong and I am sorry.

Andres,

The point is, if you need such information and your position warrants it, the manufacturer is indeed THE BEST place for such information, not here. Why not go "through channels?" It isn't like the manufacturers want to keep information from those that should have it...at least that has not been my findings.

Andres,

Of course there is a code of ethics between techs that know what each others abilities are. Now if Tim needed the latest CP-2000 manual I'd send it to him even though he is not working for a Christie Dealer. I do know that Tim is a qualified tech. I would do the same for Steve but he is a Christie dealer so the point is moot and he has access to everything I do.

The main reaosn to get the manual from Christie is because there are software updates done several times a year to the projectors. Christie having theor act togeter much more so than the other "Digital" companies does less software revisions than most manufacturers, however Tim's manual is more than likely very out of date as far as the software section in the manual... unless he too got it off line. Its very important to have a manual that also covers the very latest software version because they can actually completely change a section or add other functions you would not otherwise know nor have a clue about.

If your projector does not have the current software version then you very definately should get a tech in to load both the Christie OS and the TI OS for you. Only qualified techs will be able to get the latest software issued to them.

Mark,
As a matter of fact, software updates was 50% of the reason why I needed the manual to begin with. I am kinda responsible for that projector. The original manual (that came with the [bs] machine) is almost 4000km north of me (inside the pedestal door). It only makes sense to have a copy on my laptop for reference. Specially since none of the operators there speaks a word of english. Do you picture the pickle I´m in?

Here´s the scenario as it was when I got involved:
I got an email from management in Brazil saying that they heard that the film Hannah Montana (due to open April 27th over there) would not work with the soft version currently installed in the projector. [Eek!] [Roll Eyes]

I did some research and it turned out to be true. So, my company decided to send me (waaaaaay cheaper) to do the update, having got the software and (dummy proof) instructions from Christie.

I´ll probably be on a plane this time next year. I turned to FT trying to find someone to throw me a freakin´ bone. There´s not much one can do without the necessary tools, I´m sure you´ll agree.

Anyway, the rest is history.

Andrés

Andres.... Good luck with the software update. Its not hard to do but seems clumsy at first since you use FTP instead of HTTP to upload it into the projector. Sounds like they don't use the projector much down there... might still be set up to play MPEG instead of JPEG 2000.

Thanks, Mark, for you kind wishes [thumbsup] . I don´t know what it is set to play, but will look into it when up there. Will keep you all updated.

I am currently at the site in Rio de Janeiro. I have one doubt before attempting the software update. Where am I supposed to plug my laptop in to? The Cine IPM2K? Or the 8 port hub inside the pedestal? [Confused]
Thanks,
Andrés

Posted by Mark Gulbrandsen (Member # 72) on 04-21-2008, 07:34 PM:

Go for a connection on the 8 port hub. Shut the server down and just have the projector powered up during the upgrade. The software loads itself and then verifys that the load is good. Then the projector should re-boot by itself. Then bring the server back on line.

Do NOT forget to unplug the TPC before upgrading the firmware in the head. Failing to do so will result in a bad software load and you'll be dead in the water.

Also make sure that you upgrade to the best known versions of TPC software and SSM software prior to leaving.

Thanks, Mark. Will do that. [thumbsup]
Thanks Tristan, I was aware of the need to unplug the TPC. [thumbsup]

I´ll take a crack at it tomorrow morning.

As it turns out, I did the update today. I am currently sitting in my hotel room in Rio, hopefully not about to get the "we-can´t-project-Hannah-Montana" call.
Everything went pretty smoothly... specially after I got the correct password from Christie.
Thank you all guys for the assistance. It came in handy. [thumbsup]
Andrés
