I am giving away a small box of THX Swag to the person who comes closest to guessing how many Digital Cinema screens will be playing Episode 2.

The rules:

All posts must be in before May 1st, 2002.

The contest is limited to Fim-Techers only.

Only one "guess" post per person.

No one from THX, Dolby, Boeing, Technicolor, QuVis, Avica, EVS, Grass Valley, Barco, or Christie may play.

If there is a tie, and two people guess the same correct number of screens, the person with the most posts to the Film-Tech forum (life-time) wins.

Hmmm, since equipment "plays" and screens only reflect or "show," I'll guess zero. You may contact me for instructions on where to send the swag

Some definitions of "play."
To cause (a compact disk or audiocassette, for example) to emit recorded sounds.
To exhaust (a hooked fish) by allowing it to pull on the line.

Ted: can you confirm that the printing duplicate negatives for all the film release prints are being made directly from the Digital Source Master (DSM) files? Or is the film recording done from the Digital Cinema Distribution Master (DCDM) files, or onto the master positive stage to save time and reduce costs?

The number of DLP screens ostensibly in place on the release date, multiplied by .95, rounded down (about 5% of the total DLP screens will be out of service for one reason or another on that date, running their 35mm upgrade instead).

(But we do have an "intimate" 2200-seat one with a 25 x 55 foot screen in Kodak's Theater on the Ridge in Rochester).

I'm not sure exactly what the installed base of digital projection equipped screens adds up to in accurate numbers (I have doubts it could be any more than 75 to 100 screens).

I'll give an "optimistic" guess of 48 screens showing "Episode II" in digital projection on opening day. If I wanted to be more realistic, the total would be something like 32. But I'll go with 48.

Guess the number of Domestic screens (United States and Canada) playing / showing EP2 on May 16th.

And "Swag" is whatever I can dig up around the office, throw in a box and mail out. And I don't believe there are any newly manufactured WOW! prints sitting around, but I'll look...

And Brad, if gambling is illegal on Film-Tech, my apologies.

John P., DSM, I believe. All the film prints will be gorgeous, printed off of several filmed out original negatives. No generation loss this time. No IPs, no INs, just thousands of original negative prints out there (or as close to original negative as you can get).

I desperately want the rumored, new DVD which will be the latest version of the old "Wow" THX laserdisc. I was never able to obtain the laserdisc in any legitimate, honest, ethical way... and I refuse to pay upwards of $300 to get it on eBay from someone who, likely, didn't get the laserdisc in any legitimate, honest, ethical way either.

Bobby Pinkston gave me a DTS jacket not a THX jacket.

It is black wool with black leather (pleather) sleeves. It has a realy cool gold DTS logo on the back.

And Joe, I am a bastard.

Laurence Hammett commented in an earlier post how it is interesting the digital projection rollout is not taking the Spielberg approach (threats made about not getting a print of "Jurassic Park" if a DTS unit is not installed).

Arm twisting stunts are a terrible way to market any product. But it has to be said there is a major difference between DTS-S/DTS-6 units debut priced at $2500 and $3500 per screen and a digital projection system that costs between $200,000 and $300,000.

On top of that, DTS players as old as 9 years are still useable. Show me a digital projection system that will not be obsolete in 9 years.

I'm going to be optimistic regarding the digital installations and say at least 150. Something tells me Ted would not have started this thread unless he had something up his sleeve, and I don't think LucasFilm would really be all that proud to say that their movie was released on just 30 screens digitally. George wants more, and I'll bet he gets it.

Actually if you polled everyone there you'd most likely find that they really hate the idea of accepting lesser image quality than if it were shown on film. This is just a screen count contest, nothing else.

Sony makes an excellent quality "pro-sumer" digital video camcorder featuring lots of nice "pro" style features like a progressive scan 3 CCD array --all for $1700. It shoots very good quality NTSC standard video and also has a memory stick input for shooting digital still images.

Canon's GL-1 has a very snazzy telephoto flourite zoom lens pack, 3CCD array and a number of other nice features. It lists for $2499, but some places sell it for as little as $2100.

Canon's XL-1s is the pro-sumer reference standard camera. You can use interchangeable lenses and do lots of other nice stuff with it. It costs $4500. That price bracket is getting into the DVC-Pro camera price bracket.

The only bad thing about those cameras is that they are geared only for NTSC standard video. My guess is it will be some time before HD level consumer camcorders hit store shelves, much less even arrive for the pro-sumer level. But on the bright side, the rush on developing faster and sharper CCD chips should bring about affordable HD digital camcorders as well as 10 megapixel still cameras within the next couple years or so.

US and Canada, on May 16: 138 Digital Cinema Screens

Many thousands of 35mm FILM screens. (Ted - give us a final print count please.)

Zero 70mm FILM prints, needed for huge screens.
(Remember how obvious the CGI "digipeople" looked on the deck of the Titanic in the 70mm prints, even though the non-digital scenes looked great!? Same problem likely here, IMHO, unless 4K or greater resolution could have been used.)

Weren't there about a hundred 70mm prints each for "The Empire Strikes Back" and "The Return of the Jedi"? Shot on 35mm negative film (5247) having much less resolution than today's camera films, yet delivering great quality images on huge screens?

IMHO "The effects are thrilling, but the digital medium is still weak."

ACTUALLY...the Widescreen Review 70mm filmography mentions for "The Empire Strikes Back" that "100+ 70mm prints were struck -- a record at the time."

That figure of 75 prints for "Return Of The Jedi" *is* on the list, but is actually included in the entry for a *1985 re-release* in which 75 prints leftover from the original run were re-used. The original 1983 release included (also a record at the time) between 145 and 164 70mm prints, depending on the source used to obtain the print numbers.

(The item in the list also includes a bit of trivia that some of you might remember in that the 70mm prints of "Empire" contained numerous differences compared to the 35mm prints in that some of the transitional wipes were different, along with some shots and dialogue being different as well. The 70mm prints of "Star Wars" used a different sound mix than the 35mm prints with a variety of differences, but I'm unaware of any pictorial differences between the 70s and 35s...aside from print and projection quality, that is.)

Somewhat related...70mm print numbers and some interesting "presentation quality" quotes culled from Variety have been recently added to the entry for "Alien" (1979) in the 70mm filmography mentioned in this thread.

I stand corrected. I thought I searched on the original release years but evidently I screwed up. Actually I'm baffled how that happened because I just looked them up again (1977, 1980, and 1983) and the numbers are as you say. Weird.

Followup: I think it's the damn wheel mouse! When you select the year of release from the dropdown menu, if you roll the wheel before clicking on "Search", it advances to the next or previous year in the list. I must have accidentally changed the selected year before hitting search. (This is not unique to your site; I've had this wheel mouse thing happen when filling out forms on other sites).

Ok Ted, This is my final guess before you remind Brad to lock the thread. Star Wars will open on 204 Digital screens in the USA and Canada. 15% of the Digital projectors will experience problems during the 1st day and end up playing with 35mm film. When I win the prize, send it to Joe in Denver as he has put up with my ribbing for over a year.

I think Brad is right -- Ted wouldn't be asking this question if he didn't have something up his sleeve. I'm not even going to bother to guess. I've got some much better questions:

1. How many of these digital installations be non-DLP?
2. Will TI finally announce an upgrade from 1280x1024 to 1920x1080 resolution or higher?
3. If the answer to #2 is yes, how many theatres will have the newer, higher-resolution devices, and how many will be stuck with the older, lower-resolution ones?
4. If the answer to #2 is no, how many news stories that hype up digital projection will mention the resolution mismatch between the movie (1920x1080) and the projectors (1280x1024)?

5. How many of these projectors will actually have been paid for by the theatres, and not by companies trying to jump-start the market?

It is a possiblity, that my theater will have it on two screen. But I was told, it was about 6-8 nation wide.

Well - now ImdB has published that the number will be 19, and that Mr Lucas is less than happy. "Only digital theatres will be allowed to run episode 3".
Allow us to be honest: Cinemas will do ok without Star Wars - What about Star Wars without cinemas ?
