On the odd occasion that we presently screen DVDs in our theatre, we monitor the output in the projection box using a conventional standard resolution cathode ray monitor. This allows us to cue the DVD before allowing the signal through to our video projector.

We are thinking of upgrading to Blu ray in the near future. Apart from outputting high resolution to our video projector, do these decks allow simultaneous standard resolution output (on another connector) for monitoring purposes?

The Sony unit does have a composite video output that will display on a standard-def monitor. It also has 6-channel audio outputs (unbalanced) that you can connect directly to your processor.

I'm not terribly fond of this machine, though, since it takes quite a while to boot and another long while to start playing the disk (even with standard DVDs).

All of the Blu-Ray players out currently take longer to load even a regular DVD than a conventional DVD player. So far I haven't found one that won't output a simultaneous SD signal.

I'm not sure if the Playstation 3 can output both a SD and HD signal simultaneously. The PS3 has a HDMI 1.3 output. Then it has some strange combo plug for connecting proprietary cables for backward compatible standards. The PS3 includes one plug with SD composite and L/R analog audio cables coming out of it. You have to buy a component video cable set/adapter plug separately. The PS3 system software makes you pick how audio and video will be output, but can do more things "automatically" via HDMI. Haven't tried sending both HD and SD to two monitors at the same time, but I'm under the impression it may not be do-able.

BTW, the PS3 seems to load Blu-ray discs quite a bit faster than just about any standalone BD player on the market. Some BDs completely authored in Java do take a few seconds longer to load.

We have a Panasonic BluRay player attached to our projector via DVI/HDMI. We also have component out to a monitor (HiDef). I think you will find that BluRay players cannot output high- and low-def at the same time.

My PS3 loads regular DVDs just as fast if not faster then my DVD player. As well as quick loads for Blu-Ray.

Couldn't you use one of those converter boxes they are selling (with the $40 of our money the government subsidizes as a coupon) to get a SD output?
