Question: How does one begin to learn about D-Cinema and all the bells and whistles inside this medium since that person's technical knowledge is only in film based projection and sound?

DCI Spec
Refer to the glossary for an overview of all of the acronyms that are used within the specification.
Also, Check out the home theater forums and FAQ's to gain an understanding of video formats, resolution, and the technology used. Some of the technology is related to D-cinema.
The most confusing portion of Digital Cinema is the MXF/Jpeg/DCP thing. Don't spend too much time learning about the file structure and composition, as it won't do you too much good in the beginning.
