How do I make them go away?

Sony J-H3 connected to a Barco ACS-2048 via component video.
The DVD player connected in exactly the same way produces no interlace lines, even though its only 480.

Is there an output setting in one of the J-H3's many confusing menu functions that allows me to force progressive out?

Does this happen with all tapes or just one? It may be the tape itself (well, the post house that recorded it) that is defective. Every film festival seems to have at least one such tape.

Menu item #13 lets you change the frame rate and such, but you probably already know that this has to be set to whatever the tape was recorded with (usually either 59.94i or 23.98PsF), otherwise you won't get sound and the picture will play at the wrong speed. The J-H3 won't convert frame rates or interlace/progressive, however; it just outputs whatever format was used when the tape was recorded (same with NTSC/PAL on a J-30).

I'm pretty sure any video content shot in an interlaced format needs to be shown interlaced. If the video is converted at all into a progressive video stream you're going to see the sawtooth artifacts more easily due to the 1/60 second time difference between recording the two fields of each frame.

Unfortunately video projectors tend to be progressive by nature and have to convert i to p .
