The big question is.......Is it a real 4k resolution chip or is it some kind of wobulation technology to get 4k out of 2k chips?

If it is real 4k then this is great news. I can't wait to see 4k DLP. Based upon the quality of 2k DLP, I would imagine that 4k DLP will exceed the image quality of any 35mm release print (assuming it was sourced or scanned in 4k).

This quote in an article I found is perplexing:

Well, it's been known they already had developed the possibility of 3K on the same size.

And several years ago, they hinted they were coming out with even smaller features. Since those "announced products" never made it to market nor anyone ever talked about them again, I personally assumed they had problems with either reliability or yield (cost).

Perhaps I was wrong and they were just witholding it for the right $$$$ application. Or perhaps they DO have some problems (i.e. yield, life expectancy) but they are willing to swallow the extra cost to remain competitive with LCos or upcoming technologies. [Shrug]

Not so much as options, but the needed choice in the matter...

With the "Big Three Lions" moving forward with SONY's 4k systems installs, you know that Ti suddenly has no choice but to get on the 4k bandwagon, or faced getting shoved over the "edge of the earth" into absolute oblivion.

Yeah...believe it when you see it. The fact remains, it costs 3 times as much to make DLP imagers as LCoS imagers...if it cost the same for present 2K DLP versus Sony 4K...just how cheap do you think the DLP 4K will be? Something is definitely fishy here.

In the software business we call this "vaporware;" float a press release when a competitor announces something you don't have to prevent your customers from jumping ship. You'll have your version out "real soon now." I don't see any ship dates, and they got one customer to agree to buy the projectors when they're ready.

Well, now that it's "official", in a couple of weeks it will be a good time for dealers to start bugging christie/nec/barco.

If you start getting answers like "we still don't know when it will be out", then you know you have to go to Sony if you want to move to 4K before 8K comes along ...

I guess I'll wait until next year for the one or two 3D screens I was planning for December. Oh well, no hurry. Hopefully studios will offer real VPF to indies by then and all 10 screens could convert to digital.

I'm trying to reconcile this development with Steve's adamant claim that TI has nobody working on DLP. I suppose this could all indeed be vaporware, but damn, Christie would have to be nuts to make this announcement if they don't have something real to deliver.

I wonder what Christie's "Brilliant 3D" technology actually is???

Also, the 4k on large screens only doesn't make that much sense to me. The ability of our eyes to resolve is not based on the size of the pixels, it's the angle in our visual field that the pixels fill. You could have a 120 ft wide screen and if you are 250 feet back from it you won't be able to percieve the difference between 2k and 4k. If you have a 12 foot wide screen and sit 5 feet from it then you will be able to see the difference.

The distinction between what auditoriums need 2k vs. 4k should be made based on how many screen heights the front row is from the screen and how often people are sitting that close. If your smallest house is only there to hold films an extra week or two and is never more than 1/2 full and people never really sit up close then 2k will be fine.

The other thing is it creates a marketing conundrum. If you want to market against the home it's a lot easier to say "come to our theatre and experience over 4 times the resolution of HDTV and Blu-ray" vs. saying "come to our theater and if you happen to see a big movie on the opening week you'll experience over 4 times the resolution of HDTV and Blu-Ray.

Although I agree with Steve's "Don't believe it until you see it" statement, It's also well known that technology manufacturers often restrain from announcing their new technology until the last minute to avoid a drop in sales on their current products. TI has done a very good job of denying the existence of a 4K imager as well as plans to develop one.

Theaters who were considering converting to 2K d cinema will now wait for 4K DLP.

Obviously there is a some deal of "vapor" into all this as no 4K product will come until the "second half of 2010".

But the anouncement is meant to stop people from thinking Sony is the right way and keeping the 2K line alive. At a reduced price, I guess, and I hope reduced by a lot but pbbly will only be a token amount, while presenting 4K, which should've been the bare minimun in (serious) Dcinema applications to begin with as a "premium" (read, expensive as hell).

What really needs to happen: stop wasting money marketing and tooling factories for so many projector models. There is the need only of: a cheap 2K for poor theaters with small screens, and 2 models of (affordable) 4K: one for small/medium screens and one for medium/large. Period.

What is going to happen: not that [Roll Eyes]

Another important point: the new projectors will finally be DCI compliant, unlike current ones, which ARE NOT.

The direct consecuence of all these announcements in the past month for me: I was planning on installing one or perhaps two 3D screens by mid-December, pbbly dual-projection. Now will wait until at least May 2010. If by then studios offer serious VPF deals, will pbbly install 2 3D screens plus 8 digital when 4K becomes available. Depending on the prices, at least 2 would be 4K. Ideally, they'll all be 4K if the price is right. Only 1 screen is really ok with a 2K solution (i.e. it's a small screen in a long-ish auditorium with the first row kind of far).

Obviously there is not a direct relationship between the size of the screen and the benefits of 4K resolution against 2K. When saying "2K for a small screen" in reality what I mean is 2K for a budget installation on a small auditorium that seats few patrons, has a small screen and hopefully people are sitting far away from it ....

I, too, am skeptical about this announcement. What are the native resolution specifications of this "4K" chip? Does it have 4096 X 2160 pixels of native resolution? Or is TI just doing something sneaky with a standard 2048 X 1080 chip? They did a lot of wobbulation shenanigans with 960 X 1080 chips in RPTV sets. It wouldn't be surprising to find a similar lack of truth in advertising in this case either.

The key to using vaporware successfully is actually having the ability to deliver on your promises at some time in the future. No manufacturer wants to cannibalize their current sales (TI's 2k imagers, in this case), but they also have to balance that against potential customers going over to Sony. If the risk is between taking no action and going out of business, and announcing early and taking the chance that you won't be able to deliver the product on schedule, the choice is clear.

Since 3D is limited by DCI specs to 2K-48fps, I'm not afraid of buying a dual-2K solution for 3D, if the price of 2K is right, even if it sort of sucks when projecting 2D against 4K.

With dual projection (kind of a fixed pixel-shift solution), á lá Imax, at least the screen door is better hidden.

But for 2D applications, I ain't buying squat until I see the specs for the 4K stuff. If it's a wobbulation solution, it better be priced at exactly $100 over 2K and 50% below Lcos 4K, or I'll be running to Sony's or whoever's door. Can't advertise 4K if the imager is 1/4 (or even 1/2) the amount of needed pixels ...

It's either do it or bite the dust... I would think the 3 manufacturers involved probably put T.I. in a vice and clamped it hard till they relented!!! This is the wequivelent to stabbing Sony smack dab in the middle of the heart... I'd say two years off on any production scale though... By then I'll be retired!!!

So, according to the press release, Cinemark chose to buy a product that does not yet exist because they value its "quality" and "reliability." Huh?!? [Confused] Either Alan Stock is an idiot, or whoever wrote the press release should be fired. Or both.

In any case, a 4K DLP unit would be most welcome, if and when it becomes available. Good thing most theatres didn't ditch film for the soon-to-be-obsolete 2K units. If distributors will start providing 4K material, this could work out very well for all concerned.

The more I read between the lines, the more it looks like a marketing ploy to sell Wobbulation or, Allah forbid, 2 x Wobbulation as 4K.

Oh well. They better reflect it in the price, as the only cost (or difference) between the 2K and this BS "4K" would be a couple of faster (or a couple extra) DSP chips to push the 4K datastream to the DLP's.

If someone could please ask Christie for a straight answer to the number of pixels on each DLP "4K" imager, we could save ourselves weeks/months of speculation.

If their answer is something along the lines of "they are capable of 4K" or ANYTHING other than 4096x2160 ... then you get bet your @ss they are but 2K chips showing different pixels at different times. If they want to pass for "true" 4K, it would have to flash 4 times, which puts the effective frame rate (refresh) at 36hz, too low for serious applications (minimun equivalent to 35mm two-blade shutter: 48hz).

Read: headaches from watching that crap.

Until they mention the true resolution somewhere, my bet is with the cheap way out. Otherwise, they would be boasting about it and pbbly the imagers wouldn't be so freely interchangeable between projectors like they seem to be.

The only thing in my mind arguing against it being some kind of wobulation is the light output. Wouldn't you lose light doing wobulation because (I assume) the chip must be dark while the wobulation mirror shifts to the new position?

It would be great if somebody with media access could ask TI or Christie/Barco/NEC directly exactly what the physical specs of the chip are.

My gut (based on comments a couple of years back from a poster on film-tech) is that there is probably wobulation involved.

I'm trying to look at the bright side. It would be a hell of an engineering achievement to squeeze 8.8 million rapidly spinning mirrors on a small piece of silicon. In that regard I hope TI really delivers the goods.

Unfortunately the term "enhanced DLP" in that press release has me more thrown in the negative direction. The word "enhanced" can be taken any number of ways, including being a slick way of saying the DLP chip is enhanced with some extra wobbulation capabilities so it can try to act like a 4K resolution chip without having all the native pixels to do so.

The other thing everyone here has overlooked is the price tag. Sony sells theirs to "any cinema" for 83K... in quantities to the chains as we know for slightly under 60K... now even 2K DLP is going to have to get much much more competitive price wise than the present Sony pricing is to stick around... That 4K DLP projector is going to be a quarter of a million dollar projector at the rate the present pricing is staying... Price DOES MATTER in this industry big time.

Thats just it...technology wise...TI is in a pickle. 4K cost 4 times as much to make as 2K. There is no way they can make a 4K imager for the price of a 2K imager and Sony is selling their 4K systems in the same ballpark as TI's 2K. If TI could really reduce the price that much, then they would have put forth the efforts in the consumer world as well as the lower-end A/V and done away with single-chip DLP.

So...if you are buying a DCinema machine today...

Do you buy a 2K DLP when you know that next year (if you believe TI's noise) that 4K will be available? Do you go with Sony's 4K SXRD machine...after all, the "big boys" are going that route...or do you wait?

There is no small coincidence that TI's "announcement" comes on the heels of Sony landing the Regal/AMC deal for about 1/3 of the domestic screens. TI wants to slow the bleed...after all, they don't have to deliver.

The problem is, TI has already lost 1/3 of the US screens, the announcement won't help that. It makes people wary of pursuing the exisiting technology (2K) so sales are likely to go down on those and people will wait for the day that will likely never happen (DLP 4K) or just go for Sony if they need 4K today.

Those that have bought 2K already have a costly update in their future...due out in December, if they plan on DCI compliance (which is actually another 6-month delay as it was due out this Summer, originally).

So when are exhibitors (or deployment agencies) supposed to make money on these things? They cost a lot when you buy them, they cost a lot when you own them...and they can be made obsolete or antiquated rather briskly.

For many years, since 1K, digital proponents have been claiming that digital is better than film. Their claim is finally correct because the quality of average 35mm film prints is now inferior to 1K digital. It appears that labs are employing dung beetles working with mud to produce release prints with special light-filtering qualities.

I am delighted when I see a good print in our cinema that causes me to cancel orders for new lamphouse and lenses.

Concurrently, the quality of features on hard drives has improved of late so that our 16x9 1.3K dlp projector is producing results superior to the 35mm system.

I am hoping that the introduction of dci stuff is further delayed here so that film companies might re-think the downgrading of 35mm.

For average screens, well set-up e-cinema is fine for flat features, particularly those originating on tape or 16mm. Investing more than $100,000 in a digital projector for these features is like buying a Kenworth to do the shopping. But, until dci stuff is feasible, Scope features should continue to be released on prints which exhibit some of the advances in film technology that have been wrought in the last 50 years.

Just like we finally moved from interlace analog TV to digital (mostly progressive) one, Welcome to the new world of interlaced Dcinema. Sort of. And totally speculating that this is what TI is gonna come out with.

But I doubt they'll do 2xwobullation. That would be way too head-ache inducing at the huge light levels they are claiming. Pbbly developed some odd 3K chip and wobbulated only in one direction to 4K. Then they can get away with a single flash, so the effective frame rate becomes 72hz, which is fine for most people to not be bothered by the interlacing).

I think it was Hughes / JVC that developed LCoS, JVC still makes a home model with the technology.

I remember being very impressed with the first demo I saw of the LCoS technology at a SMPTE show in 2000.

Personally I have only heard good reports about the Sony 4k from those that use it, although its color set up can take a while to set up properly.

Will the layman will they even notice the difference of 4k dlp or LCoS?

There are many players developing their own flavor of Lcos.

The most advanced is JVC with their D-ILA chips. They even have available commercially an 8K projector (and 4K, of course). They haven't developed DCI projectors for movie theatres, though.

Another player that is significant would be Canon. They have a nice line of Lcos front projectors. But none for movie theatres.

And, of course, Sony.

Main problem with Lcos is that they are not very light efficient compared to DLP. They require polarized light plus 4 prism assembly, against DLP that is fine with regular light and only 3 prisms. But on Lcos favor, a system can be developed that renders a 3D system almost as bright as a 2D system while in the DLP camp you usually lose half (or more) of the light to make it "3D".

Also, DLP, being "purely reflective", can take very large lamps w/o "melting". Lcos is transflective, and certain components can be damaged by excessive heat or luminous flux, so they can't really take (reliably) too-high wattage lamps. And cinema applications call for high wattage lamps being used for many hours a day every single day for "20 years".

Otherwise, and IN (total) THEORY, LCos is everybit as good IF NOT BETTER than DLP in image quality. Now, in practical terms, Lcos has some manufacturing difficulties that MAY impare the quality a bit in SOME products, etc, while DLP is a very solid, very well developed for years solution that is "bullet-proof".

There is also the possibility that Lcos may be a bit less durable than DLP, but again, within comparison and it's not 100% required that they last less.

What I mean is:

In THEORY, Lcos COULD (on paper) be every bit as good as DLP OR BETTER, except in brightness. And DLP could, on paper, be virtually as good as Lcos, while surpassing in brightness.

In PRACTICE Lcos current offers have slight advantages in some image quality parameters (fill-factor="screen door", smooth color transitions) while DLP has others (less motion blur, better uniformity, longevity, ...)

Both technology COULD be indistinguishable to the layman (it doesn't mean they currently are).

About fabrication costs, I'm not an expert. My understanding is that DLP is made in a regular semiconductor line and only the last step, the packaging, is done by custom machinery. And I believe TI outsources the packaging and it's done by another company outside TI.

Lcos only does the first so-many steps on a regular semiconductor line. Then the liquid cristal part must be done on an LC line. They probably have this line custom tooled to do the packaging as well.

My total wild guess is that Sony's particular flavor of LCos is about the same price at 4K as TI is at 2K. They are actually "cheaper", but they are "more expensive" as a final product due to the added optical line (4 prisms against 3) and larger chip size.

Sony's 4K chips are slightly larger, at 1.55" (against TI's 1.2" for 2K) accounting for the higher cost of projectors due to larger lenses/prisms/rod integrators/etc. I guess you could think 70mm against 35mm and figure one projector/lens/print should be significantly cheaper than the other. But in this case, it's not. TI charges about the same for 2K as Sony for 4K.

A couple of things I thought about last night:

First, in regards to the screen door effect, if this is actually a native 4k DLP chip of the same size as the 2k chip isn't it possible the screen door effect will be worse? I can't imagine that the space between pixels can be scaled down in half that easily (since I would assume that the original DLP design tried to minimize the gaps) so the same size chip will have 4x the screen door lines magnified by the same factor.

If it is wobulation, they should be able to get a decent frame refresh rate. Home "1080P" wobulation sets with color wheel have to show at least 6 "parts" for each frame (2 wobulation spots and 3 color wheel spots) at 60 fps so the chip has to show 360 fps. Even if they were doing 4x wobulation you would think they can do a 96Hz refresh rate with the right formatter board design. If they designed it so the 2k chip would be shown once for each "corner" of the image so that you actually displayed 4096x2160 unique pixels it could look very good. My skepticism is that from my understanding home wobulation always mixes 2 half pixels to form a pixel. While it reduces screen door you really can't get a perfect representation of the pixel.

Some of the people on here seem to have contacts within TI. Please ask your sources if this will be a native 4k 1.2" DLP chip or some kind of wobulation.

Anything short of a true 4K chip will be viewed as a scam...Sony already has a true 4K imager...their pixel spacing is also VERY tight.

Another thing moving in LCoS' favor would be a change to Lasers as light sources...it would give LCoS much more light producing capability than it has now...it would also help on the color front.

Re-doing the math, I end up with 90hz rather than 96hz, but not that important. Of course, in home applications, they are only dealing with a 960x1080 matrix.

My calculations were based on what they currently can do. Just a few short (around 9) months ago, the DCI projectors were incapable of full resolution at 48fps (3D) to triple flash at 144hz. Only recently have they been able to do 1980x1080x48x3.

One must assume that, since their most expensive projectors only recently adquired that possibility, that's probably around their bandwidth limit.

Based on those calculations, I get my figures.

Indeed if they can do 2K at over 144hz at full contrast at TWO different wobbulation angles (2 on each spatial direction), then perhaps they can get over 36hz refreshes.

But that would be only giving some formatting bandwidth we have not yet seen from TI before.

Can they do it? I would guess on theory, perhaps. But I'm not sure a DLP can take much more refresh rate w/o impairing the contrast. Perhaps home applications have a reduced contrast to allow for the 60fps 2xwobbulatedx3colorwheeled applications.

Don't know.

TI, for whatever reason (pbbly technological walls) "loves" 2K. So as long as they are in business and still offering the product, I say they'll support it.

If TI were to do "the right thing", which is to offer a very cheap 2K small projector for budget applications and then two affordeable 4K projectors for real cinemas (one for small screens, one for large), 2K support could dissapear if there was no demand whatsoever for the 2K and everybody chose 4K over it.

But they are still pushing 2K down the throat even today, announcing a miriad of 2K offers and offering nothing in 4K for a full year and hinting it will be "extra" (=expensive).

I think they are [sex] us.

At least now we'll see a ton of 4K DI's for sure, so the 35mm prints will start once again to look good and cinemas with 35mm film will have an advantage over those with 2K ....

There is one way TI can reduce the cost: miniaturization of scale.

3 or more years have passed since TI introduced their 2K DLP chip. Computer chip manufacturing techniques have improved at least a generation or two since then. Intel is moving to 32 nanometer processes for making its CPUs for 2009-2010.

Obviously a DLP chip could not be made so small or thin as a traditional CPU or DSP chip because of the moving parts, but perhaps certain advancements could help reduce the size of those spinning mirrors to scale down DLP chip sizes. That in turn would make 2K DLP chips less expensive to fabricate since more would fit on a computer chip production wafer. With enough miniaturization one could indeed fit 4K worth of spinning DLP mirrors into the footprint of the current 2K chip.

The big question is what kind of progress, if any at all, has Texas Instruments made in scaling down the parts sizes of DLP chips? The question would be answered when we find out the actual native resolution of these "enhanced DLP" chips.

The PR will cause some fence sitters which is what TI wants. This still leaves Sony with the advantage and they may win further market shares.

The act of promoting vaporware is a tactic that works. Dolby did much to seal the fate of Cinema Digital Sound with its March 1991 press release about Dolby Digital, never mind the final product didn't roll out to movie theaters until June of 1992. That's just one example. The computing industry, video gaming industry and many others use the ploy all the time.

Yes, and the only time I have ever seen a Dolby person was at a demo (by invite) of Dolby Digital, using a makeshift reader. This was a few months before DTS was introduced.

Actually it was much more then that!!! There was a big hoopla with a crowd of a couple thousand present (I was there) at Showest when Ioan Allen made the announcement to all there. I'm quite sure the press release came afterwords. One thing you can bet though is that Dolby had already worked out enough of the technology to know they could do this in a reaosnable amount of time. One might view Dolby's DA-10 and CAT 699 reader and their 2K version of Dolby Digital... whilst the DA-20 and Cat 700 and up were the 4K versions.

It would not characterize Ioan's announcement as vaporware for the following reasons.

Dolby started serious work on SR.D since about 1987 as I recall.

Ray Dolby was still finishing SR so the company could not put the pedal to the metal as it were, but a very good team was assembled for the project. While we were waiting for the green light, we did the bar code automation project as well working out the location and size of the bits on film, a bit reduction algorithm, as well as a reader.

One of my roles in this was to gather a number of 35mm penthouses so we could decide on the best approach quickly. The prototype reader had bits off my Simplex XL penthouse.

Dolby's announcement, coupled with CDS's mishaps, did have the desired the effect of slowing down the pace. Dolby had a reputation for delivering on promises so the announcement had credibility.

Perhaps TI's announcement will have the same effect and for the same reason, credibility.

Dolby had the AC2 compression system in use in early 1991. AC3 wasn't done yet. The first DD test system was used at the end of 1991 on the 6th Star Trek movie. The system didn't get introduced to theaters until June of 1992. The main reason why Dolby chose to announce Dolby Digital in March of 1991 was to steal the spotlight away from CDS and its first advertised 35mm CDS release (which was The Doors). If CDS' system hadn't been a threat Dolby would have held off on the announcement until the end of 1991 or early 1992.

TI has already been making DLP chips for more than a decade. The "enhanced 4K" DLP chip they're planning to sell may not exist yet and there is still a big question on whether it really is 4K. It's a vaporware product and the only motive for announcing it now is to attempt to keep Sony and its now available 4K system at bay.

As far as credibility goes, I'd like to see technical disclosure from Texas Instruments about the native resolution of their enhanced 4K DLP chip. Is it really 4K?

The way I always go about these type of things is:

-If it was truly 4K, in no more than a few weeks the technical details would certainly be advertised or answered in the press somewhere. Heck, I would personally phone Christie and ask them if I have to. You wouldn't want to have a techonological feat like a 4K DLP chip for (around) the price/size of current 2K system and NOT advertise it left-and-right.

If there is a cloud of "mystery", carefully chosen words (like "effective resolution" or "capable resolution", etc) instead of just plain-old "native resolution", etc .... then, there is something fishy there.

The only valid answer from TI is: what's the pixel count of your 4K chips? Answer: 4096x2160. Any other answer would smell like [bs] is going on.

You can claim that your wobbulated 2K chips can put a 4K pixel count on the screen. But it CAN'T put them all at the same time, obviously. And putting 2K and then another 2K and then another 2K and then the last 2K is not the same as putting 4K.

It would be weird if we started a new era of .... INTERLACED! D-Cinema [dlp]

There are people on the AVS (I think) forum claiming it is a true 4k chip at 1.2" and that the info came from a contact at Barco.

I'd still take it with a grain of salt since it is only a message board post with unnamed sources. One comment in the thread was that it's been in the works for a while.

I sat next to the TI exec for cinema at the first screening of footage from "Avatar" three hours ago at Cine Expo. FWIW, he says it's is "genuine" 4K and will be done on the 1.2 chip only. As to time to first delivery of chips, I did not ask.

Now as to Bobby's last points. Reciting when AC-2, AC-3, and what date a film released is a simple matter of record and I'll take your word for it as I no longer remember such minutia, claiming to know the motive why Dolby Labs chose a particular date to make an announcement or seeming to claim malice or bad will as a fact on Dolby's part is another.

Did you work for CDS, or someone directly involved with film digital sound? If you do not have direct knowledge of this, you should maybe soften your writing style. If you do, lay it out there.

TI and Dolby Labs have pretty good historical records of backing up their claims in the past and this was my main point.

I thought they might be using spatial shift on the pixels to hide the latticework between the pixels. This is very commonly done in broadcast television cameras to improve resolution... which it does.

I think Sam's post is all I need though. I doubt the TI guy is going to try to pull the wool over anyone's eyes. T.I. is a first class corporation and always have produced top notch semiconductors. It's obvious though that even alot of people at T.I. didn't know about this either... may have been why there is just a supposed skelton crew in 2K DLP... they all left and went somewhere else to do 4K to keep it a corporate secret. This is also very common within companies.

ONe thing is for sure... it's going to be dam expensive!!

Sometimes opinion, conjecture, and historical facts get all twisted up in knots. Only a few current or former Dolby employees know for sure what was going on there in the early days of digital sound. The rest of us are left to guess what occurred.

The more I think about the 4K DLP thing, the more convinced I am that it has to be real 4K. Anything less than that from TI and its partners, especially Christie, would put their system at a severe marketing disadvantage, unless it has some other "hook" that trumps real 4K.

That may already be what will happen. The price of 2K gear has to come way way down into say the 30K dollar range for a complete booth and this T.I. 4K gear has to be priced accordingly with Sony's 4K gear. I doubt we'll see that happen. I still say it's going to be out of range for even the large chains to buy into on much of a scale. I can bet that Imax will be the forst to use them though...

Pure Conjecture:

TI must have 4K running in a lab somewhere. When AMC & Regal announced they were going with Sony, there were probably frantic meetings and conference calls between TI, Christie, Cinemark, and other interested parties, in which TI was told to either commit to 4K, or watch their 2K business slide into oblivion. Kind of like Hey TI, either shit or get off the pot!

There is conjecture, opinion, speculation etc, but one thought going around the show is that at the end of the day, because of price, there will be one screen of 4K and the rest 2K (kind of like 70mm) in years past.

The situation sounds a little like 70mm versus 35mm, but there is some big differences.

A lot of multiplex sites (Regal, AMC, Cinemark and others) will have 4K installed in every auditorium -something 70mm never had on any large scale.

Prices between 2K and 4K prints shouldn't be any different either, although the JPEG2000 compression levels on 4K resolution virtual prints may run significantly higher than 2K. Doesn't DCI specs still dictate a 250 million bit per second maximum even for 4K content? The major cost differences between 70mm and 35mm prints kept 70mm prints out of a lot of 70mm equipped theaters.

Setting up a 4K movie shouldn't be any different in principal than setting up a 2K movie playlist. Perhaps it may take longer to download the movie via satellite or have the server ingest the movie from a portable hard drive. But not if the movie has higher levels of data compression to make up for the difference. More work went into setting up to show a 70mm mag striped print. Not so much for 70mm DTS.

4K is really where digital projection needs to be in order to be a credible replacement for 35mm film projectors. 4K isn't a replacement for 70mm. Still, Hollywood has to get on the ball in terms of generating native 4K digital intermediates and CGI. Otherwise any advertising of "4K" for a movie will likely be a bit phony since the projector is really just blowing up a 2K movie file. That would be a little like all those 1.85:1 movies in the 1980s using 70mm prints for 6-track Dolby audio.

If TI's new DLP chip is truly native 4K then that certainly is good news for Texas Instruments. It would mean the company had to have managed radically reducing the size of DLP chip parts. 4K DLP chips for movie theaters is only part of the equation, and not the most profitable part either.

The real benefit with an updated DLP manufacturing process is being able to produce DLP chips for computer projectors and home theater projectors at much smaller sizes and higher resolution levels. TI may be able to breathe new life into that market.

I don't think there is currently any DLP-based projectors with 1080p native resolution selling for any less than $2000 -and that's a single chip solution with some serious compromises. A 3-chip system would cost a lot more money. Most of the low cost DLP projectors I see in computing catalogs have low resolutions like 800 X 600 or 1024 X 768.

With a 1080p DLP chip produced at only 25% of its former size some huge cost savings could be possible. 3-chip DLP 1080p home theater projectors might get a lot more popular for home theaters if some models came in under $5000 or $2500 price points. More offices and classrooms might jump on 1080p DLP single chip projectors if they could be had for under $1000.

While I certainly have no ill will nor ill-wish TI anything...I just don't believe it (and will be the first to admit if I'm wrong). The potential $$$ from 4K or anything DLP at this point just don't justify spending penny one.

Once DCinema is the predominate...what are the yearly sales of chips really going to be to handle new builds and repairs? It can't support itself. If 4K DLP is like 70mm (one screen per large complex...or maybe two)...then that potential payback is even smaller.

The DLP folks didn't go into a secret place to develop 4K...they were laid-off.

I'm standing behind my only sure thing when it comes to movies and movie theatres...believe it when you see it.

As for Dolby...I recall putting in a very pricey system into the Uptown...DA10 with a pair of Cat 699 readers...it was around $20K for everything, if I recall correctly...it was in time for The Fugitive...or 1993. It definitely was not the first system installed anywhere but it was also one of the first in the DC-Metro area and Dolby made a deal to Cineplex to get it done. The Uptown carried a bit of prestige that would translate to other exhibitors.

Well, I bet you'd have a hard time convincing Christie, BARCO, and NEC of that. These three companies have way too much invested to be over run by the folks at Sony. One can pretty much assume they put the vice on T.I. and clamped it down really hard. For all we know these three companies may have financed it...

As for layoffs it just doesn't make sense! Why lay off an entire team familiar with the scientific and production process of DLP and then hire and put others to work on the same thing just to add more pixels. Give me a break... companies can be and are typically very secretive about big developments which this indeed is. So secretive that other dummy divisions are sometimes created to put up a smoke screen... You may have been fooled Steve obviously unbeknownst to yourself into thinking and posting exactly what T.I. was wanting!!! You were probably one of the smoke screens.

As to some of the technology developments still going on at TI, perhaps the development of the 4K DLP cinema chip is an offshoot of the new TI Pico DLP technology.

The second-gen chip is about 20 percent smaller and thinner in fact, and it boasts the ability to display WVGA resolution (the previous model has HVGA resolution), all while delivering a brighter display! TI's press specifically mentions mobile phones, so don't be surprised if the Show doesn't have a host of competitors to deal with any day now. Texas Instruments is on hand at MWC, and their press conference is tonight, so we'll be watching, magnifying glass in hand, to see what else they have in store for us.

Now we are talking, Christie. At that price, I don't mind getting a dual-projection setup for 3D by year's end either.

But to pay top price for 2K that wasn't even DCI compliant was always, in my opinion, not a very wise choice. It's either cheap and "transitional", like 2K is/was, or it's top quality and here-for-ever, like 4K may be.

But to get the worst of both worlds, the price of "real" equipment and the performance of "home theatre", and the obsolence of non-DCI compliance ... well, I wasn't buying into that for a long as I could hold.

Only 3D and VPF (for those that got it) was forcing falling for that trap. But distributors are, without doubt, making a huge mistake by not playing nice into this.

Theatres are going to equip one or two screens digital only and only book those distributors that are nice to them, like Paramount. The rest is going to remain 35mm for the longest time.

In the US this may be different due to the largest chains dominating such a big slice of the pie, but for the rest of the world ...

Sorry Mark...the numbers just don't add up. Like the Pico projectors...everything DLP had was in the shute already.

Not you or anyone else can show a viable business model for making the DLP chips for DCinema...the market is too small...and to have a high-end version, makes the market that much smaller.

As for the DCI booth at $30K today...what a lie. There are no projectors at that price...let alone when you add a lens, server, sound....and oh yeah...no DCI compliant projectors yet...that isn't until Christmas time...which, if TI has this 4K thing going full-steam...why can't they hurry up on DCI compliance for what is out there now?

That said, price have come down, for sure...the CP2000-M, if you can get your hands on one, are pretty low-cost. What I find odd is that prices have come down on DCinema machines much more than on traditional A/V machines...an A/V DLP (3-chip) are still much more expensive than DCinema counterparts. Single chip A/V projectors have gotten pretty cheap...Sanyo has one for about $13,000 and it is a 2K at 6500 lumens.

Of course it doesn't add up for T.I. but it DOES add up for Christie, BARCO, and NEC. And that was part of my point.

I don't think there is any way they had it ready up the chute because the amount of support electronics, design work,optical aspects, etc just isn't something one stashes up the chute someplace. They would have beeen selling them long ago and there probably wouldn't be a Sony 4K were it available as you say. I know.... you will be in denial about this for years...

The M cheap??? I don't look at about 48 grand as being cheap. You're still back up to about 70K ish when you add in all the rest of the stuff you need for a single screen.

Or, if you don't like single-chip, you could pair up a couple of 3 Lcos chips 1920x1080 canon WUX10's at $8800 each and get around 6400 lumens for under $18k.

Honestly, around $50K+ for a bottom-line DCI projector is ... oh, well, I have to say it: stupid. I don't mean stupid to buy it, I mean stupid to sell it.

Christie (and TI) have been spending too much money, in my opinion, in marketing, attending Vegas fairs, and your usual trying to offer 200 different models for 200 different "needs".

If they would concentrate in offering few models, with easy interchangeable parts between them, they could lower the cost in tooling the factories and workforce etc.

They way they are going, it's not looking good. Projector's market is already a bit crowded, and some asian companies are also thinking about jumping in. Some major players for the longest time are also in trouble (Infocus bought out just before filing bankruptcy).

It looked for a while lke everythnig might head towards the .98" chips and that would have simplified alot of things. Because T.I. improved the 1.2" chips triple flash aspect for 3-D and because of 4K the 1.2" chip may actually be the more commonly found chip 10 years from now.

I guess one important thing will be related to upgrade ability. Can people who already have 2k installed be able to take their existing equipment and upgrade it to 4k. I would assume one could change out the light engine from 2k to 4k but what else would have to change to accommodate the upgrade.

Probably everything else except the light source and integrator system. I would assume that oncce one gets to the prism it'll be different. The T.I. circuitry and projector interface would be all different.

I would think the new projectors will be designed to take either 2k or 4k imagers. If the imagers are the same exact size then all the optics would be the same. The projector could have the interface for both resolutions and just have different imager chips and associated boards for 2k vs. 4k.

Also, if the 4k chip is 1.2" it shouldn't be THAT much more expensive to produce. The only major difference should be the lower yield of the 4k chips. How much lower the yield is would determine how much more cost there is to produce them.

I don't know of anyone paying upwards of $48K for an M but I suppose some are. For what it is, I do call the M cheap...even at $48K. And yes...when you add it all up it does get up there...but it was you, sir, Mark, that said a DCinema booth was a mere $30K.

Indeed I don't see T.I. 4K DLP even being priced somewhat close to the 82K that Sony quote for complete one ups. It's still a fact that Sony may indeed win this battle just because of the price... which these days is all that matters to the bottom liners running this biz.

At the very least, I hope the 4K chip from TI lights a very hot fire under the butts of the folks at Sony. I hope the competition forces Sony to make every possible improvement to their 4K LCOS system to get color, brightness and contrast levels up to where they should be.

Well, I thought I'd bump the thread to see if anyone got the scoop as to how TI is planning on doing their 4K. If by now "everybody in the know is keeping a tight lip", I'm afraid that means they are doing some trickery with under-4K imaging chips and sticking the 4K label on them. I hope the price reflects these (assumed, alleged) inferior-to-4K chips as well.

Of course, all manufacturers are now getting around this whole issue.

TI says it has around 11,000 screens worldwide. 5000 screens worldwide are said to be available in 3D. Barco says they'll sell Carmike some 4600 of the new projectors (implying most will be 4K)

It's funny to note how for 2010 there are planned as many 3D movie releases as there were in 1953 (around 30). In 2009 their will be about as many as in 1954 (a bit <20).

Well, most (all?) servers MUST (as per DCI specifications) play 2K, 4K and 2K-48fps (3D). The thing is, are they capable of outputing that to a projector w/o downscaling it to 2K?

The answer should be: yes, that's easy and simple, as it's actually harder to downscale to 2K than it is to shoot it out straight to 4K after decompression.

The problem being, until recently, there was no need to output 4K as there were no 4K projectors. Sony being the exception but using their own, "propietary/incompatible" way to input the signal.

Do you know, Brad, how the Dolby is outputing the 4K to a (future) 4K TI projector? 4K needing 4 times the amount of signal than 2K, would need either eight HD-SDI conectors or something new (like, maybe, 4 x 3G-SDI)
