Hi Everyone,

Would anyone know if it is technically possible to project 3D in our 2K digital theater. Would you need a special TV set top box / 3D TV tuner ? and also set the right eye /left timing to the projector.

Cheers

David.

It would depend on what system the signal is being encoded to. As long as you have the proper system decoder (yes like a set top box) you should be able to do it. We do live broadcasts of 3D content to theaters all the time (over satellite) But the process should be the same.

There are a few live soccer WC events scheduled in 3D this year for cinemas. Actually we are wondering how they manage to get them into the DCI projectors so that 3D display works as with DCI content. The 2D live events here so far all used standard hardware and were 'encrypted' only by keeping the transmission parameters a secret.

With 3D, there are many more issues to solve. Framerates, 3D-format conversion, 3D-system sync, TripleFlash issues, reconfiguration times, etc.

I also guess they would need to transmit 3D-TV in 24p for cinemas. Which will become a problem once the same live production chain will be used for 3D-TV (home) and 3D-Cinema because of the different framerates.

I'm also interested in hearing from anyone who has screened 3DTV through a DCI 3D system.
Here in Australia, we're getting the World Cup in 3D on free-to-air TV. In 2D they're left-right pairs at half the horizontal resolution of HD.
I've recorded a recent 3D rugby league game off-air and played it back via NVidia 3D on my computer, but I'd like to show these broadcasts (live) on the big screen.

Any ideas?

There's a free player called "Stereoscopic Player" that can play these 3D shows (and DCPs as well), but it won't live stream 3D.
Even so, I'd still have to work out how our NEC would handle 120Hz video in - and then trigger our glasses.
