regarding this technology. I'm still building
my Linux machine so I haven't progressed on the issue.

There is an SNMP agent in Windows XP. I'm not sure if that is what you are looking for, and I have no experience using it, but it might be worth a try.

Open Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs --> Add Windows Components then check management and Monitoring Tools

If your NE is not identified, or shows up as unknown, you may be able to import its MIB.

Isn't the snmp agent in XP there mainly for use with Server 2003 and so on? I am poretty sure it is.

In SNMP parlance, an "agent" is the software that sends traps and answers queries, it is not the network monitor system... In short, it is not a "client."
