Here we go again.

Just received 2 new trailers...one for THOR and one for TRANSFORMERS 3 and they both have fake names as their file name.

THOR is NORTHMAN and TRANSFORMERS 3 is CRASH TEST.

This is pretty stupid. These trailers are both already on line on YouTube etc. What is there for them to gain from this?

As it's not possible to rename the files in the Dolby Server, now I have to make a note of what fake name goes with what real movie in the trailer files???

Sheeeeesh!

You should start replying and saying that "You never sent me that trailer." People complain about too many trailers anyway. [Wink]

A Million bucks says those copies come from Deluxe.

Oh, and you spelt "aaaarrrRggggghhhhH!!!" wrong.

It's these little things that matter. [Razz]

Mark has a great point. Don't play them. Tell the studios you aren't programmed to play Northman or Crash Test on any movies, now where are Transformers and Thor? When they tell you that Crash Test is TF3, for example, then ask why it is renamed and get into as long as a conversation about it as possible just to annoy the piss out of them. Do this each and every time.

That's a great plan but it would only punish the poor exhibitor relations people, not the idiot "suits" who make the decisions to do these dopey things.

Boo hoo Mike.... it is those exhib relations guys (and gals) who have a pipeline to the dumbass suits and they NEED to get thier shit together!!

This whole fake name thing is incredibly stupid, it was bad enough with film prints (but at least you could open the can or unwind a bit of the trailer to see what you have) but now with D-Crapema you have to waste valuable time ingesting the shit to see if it is what you need.

I agree 100% with Mike and Joe, call and tell them you aren't playing that title and if they don't send out the trailers with the REAL feature names, don't play them.

Posted by Mike Blakesley (Member # 26) on 01-04-2011, 01:38 PM:

You actually think the exhibitor relations people have a "pipeline to the suits" who make decisions? Wake up and smell the film cleaner. They might have an e-mail address that will get to the suit's secretary, but I'd bet that's about all.

HEY STUDIO IDIOTS...KNOCK IT OFF!!!

Seriously, we have better things to do than play your stupid games. I can't tell you how many times people have come to pick up a print and the pickup failed because of that nonsense. I understand the false sense of security fake names provides...BUT ITS JUST A TRAILER! Its a piece of ADVERTISING for YOUR MOVIE! Do you want it played or not?

Nope, just don't play them. The ONLY way to get the suit's attention is to watch their movie not do as much business as they predicted.

BTW John, are these trailers (that don't exist) encrypted? Since they are already on YouTube that would be phenomenally stupid.

Posted by Mike Blakesley (Member # 26) on 01-04-2011, 02:54 PM:

I agree the whole idea of mis-naming trailers is incredibly stupid, but not playing them for that reason would be more stupid, unless you are a wealthy exhibitor that doesn't need good ticket sales.

As for the suits, you have to remember that these are the same people who pay millions of dollars for TV ads, yet produce one-sheets that don't have the NAME OF THE FREAKING MOVIE on them. So you're not exactly talking about people who have much sense here.

Joe's idea (a few posts up) about calling in and being "confused" about the wrong names is probably the best. Anything that can generate a lot of complaints from the people on the front lines to their supervisors might get a few things to change.

Brad's point is the most valid here.

These trailers are for THEIR film, NOT yours.
This whole thing smacks of some idiot suit who is hell bent on justifying his/her job. There is NO thought put into this idea. The fact that the damn thing is on You Tube surely is a no-brainer?

I can understand Mike's point too, but making the exhib's job that much harder does nothing for the better presentation of the studio's product. There should be NO need to get on their arses every time something stupid like this happens.

Tell them to bash their trailer and just copy a poster onto the preshow slides and run that.

This stupid idea is dumb on so many fronts...

1. It's a DCP. No-one else can play it.
2. Putting the flash drive in a PC it tells you it needs to be formatted to use it so you can't get at the file anyway.
3. It's a TRAILER! It's ADVERTISING! Would you like the links to them on YouTube or the links to them on the official movie site?
4. The flash drive (with the fake file name) came with a handy ID tag naming the REAL movie title.

I'm going to diplomatically explain why this is the dumbest idea this year (the year is still young) and ask them to fix it up and re-send the files with the correct name on it. We'll see how that goes.

At first I was thinking that someone must think that the fake named trailers would be helpful because they would get you acquainted with the fake name that will be used on the feature. But who am I kidding. The feature will have a different name.

And "Crash Test" is a pretty funny name for Transformers 3. I wonder if they're referring to this scene.

Technically this is not 100% correct, because any Windows PC with Stereoscopic Player http://www.3dtv.at can play a DCP, most trailers are distributed in FAT32 format which is plug-and-play accessible by any PC or Mac, and the few that are formatted in EXT2/3 can be read as well with a Linux install, or free third-party drivers.

But then again, it's only advertising.

Normally I wouldn't post something like this, but the PITA who decided to start making fake titles on DCI trailers has angered me enough to do this and deserves this.

Hi Guys,

I’m a long time reader of Film-Tech but I’ve never posted to the forum before as up to now I’ve never had anything to say or share that someone else hasn’t already posted to the site….. How ever I can help with renaming trailers.

First download and install XML Notepad 2007 from Microsoft (It’s Free) at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=72d6aa49-787d-4118-ba5f-4f30fe913628&displaylang=en

Then right click the cpl, select properties and make a note of the size in bytes.

Close the properties and using XML Notepad open the cpl file.

The field “ContentTitleText” is what appears on the server, you can edit this field to display whatever you want, I generally put the film title, the trailer version and the certificate in the field but you can put whatever you want in , once you have made your changes save the cpl overwriting the original.

Now right click the cpl, again, select properties and make a note of the new size in bytes.

Next using XML Notepad open the pkl file.

Expand the tree for “AssetList” and expand the asset trees until you find the one whose size is the same as the original cpl file.

Nearly there, replace this field with the size of the new cpl file and delete all the characters from the “Hash” field. (Take care not to delete the “Hash” field from the Asset tree)

Finally save and overwrite the pkl file.

And that’s it; this should now ingest on to your server and display what you want.

It is possible to generate a new hash for the pkl but so far I’ve found you don’t need one.

This works for the Doremi servers but I would suggest that you make a copy of the original cpl and pkl files before you try this so that you can revert back to the original if it doesn’t work with your server.

We have the same beef with the mis-named USB files here.

In response to John Wilson's reply above, i hunted down a package that allows windows to read the USB drives (USB are linux format)

it is an Ext2 Volume manager
Link: http://www.ext2fsd.com/

I originally installed it because our QUBE server would not show us what was on a USB after we ingested a file, only shows what has NOT been ingested. And as we often send our trailers between sites, we needed to know what was on certain drives.
Hopefully it will help some of you guys aswell.

Regards,
Kyle.

Hey Brad, thanks for the link (sorry, I missed that when you put it up for me).

I just did a quick test with Lindsay's method and it works fine. Thanks, Lindsay. [thumbsup]

Now, if only I could get all those ones already in the servers file names changed. [Mad]

On page 1 Lindsay Ross pointed out a procedure to re-name a DCP. I followed it to the letter and tested with a Dolby server and although it did recognize the title of the clip properly, it wouldn't load up. Any ideas?

Posted by John Wilson (Member # 269) on 02-23-2011, 09:04 PM:

Hmmm...it worked for me (using Dolby also). What did you rename it? Did you keep the 'hash'? Do the lengths match?

Posted by Brad Miller (Member # 2) on 02-24-2011, 02:18 AM:

I left the hash blank and corrected the size. Is that what you did? I'll try it again tomorrow I guess.

Posted by John Wilson (Member # 269) on 02-24-2011, 01:59 PM:

No, leave the hash there but remove everything else from that line.

Posted by Brad Miller (Member # 2) on 02-24-2011, 11:32 PM:

You mean remove the dfagrganerlgiasrbilagu from the hash line and leave it blank, right? (That's what I did.)

Posted by Chris Slycord (Member # 4239) on 02-25-2011, 02:05 PM:

Having not seen the file you're referring to, the part with the random characters in a hash file is generally the hash itself.

Now if this hash file isn't one with the line containing junk like the filename and size (and just has the hash itself) then I'm wrong on my assumption.

I left the ' = ' in there but removed all else as you did.

Software companies used to have to do this with "codenames" on their development efforts in order to disguise their most popular projects so as to keep competitors from getting the bright idea of working on the same kind of thing at the same time. They kept it hush-hush back then.

Then it became *chic*, and everybody was codenaming everything they worked on all the time, with no apparent point to it, right along with publishing full details.

Gotta be awesome. We gotta codename. Wow...

Insert spoon.

Gag.

Repeat.

I have no problem with them putting a codename to it while it's in production mode. When it's set to go to the exhibitor though, then that's the time to put on it what it really is.

I have about 50 trailers on my servers. Can you imagine the amount of extra work I would have to go to if they were all codenames? And I don't mean by re-naming them all either. I have to keep a separate file documenting what the codenames represent and it's a pain in the ass that I don't believe is necessary in any way whatsoever.

I've uploaded a couple of screen shots of the CPL & PKL files after I've made the changes, hopefully from this you can see what I tried to say on page 1 if it's still not working for you let me know and I'll try and figure out what you need to do for your server type.

It would be great if the nitwits building these packages could at least get the naming convention correct.
(Archive pdf here) Here are a few recent examples:

Use of "TRL" instead of "TLR":
ARTHUR_TRL-1_F_EN-XX_US-GB_51_2K_WR_20110206_MPI
GULLIVERS-2D_TRL-A_F_EN-XX_US-GB_51_2K_TCF_20100602_MOD_OV
GULLIVERS-3D_TRL-E_S_EN-XX_US-GB_51_2K_TCF_20101029_MOD_i3D-ngb_OV
NEXT-THREE-DAYS_TRL-1B_F_EN-XX_US-GB_51_2K_LION_20101019_TDC
RIO-2D_TRL-C_F_EN-XX_US-GB_51_2K_TCF_20100614_MOD_OV
RIO-2D_TRL-F_F_EN-XX_US-GB_51_2K_TCF_20101130_MOD_OV
RIO-3D_TRL-C_F_EN-XX_US-GB_51_2K_TCF_20100614_MOD_i3D-ngb_OV
RIO-3D_TRL-F_F_EN-XX_US-GB_51_2K_TCF_20101130_MOD_i3D-ngb_OV
SANCTUM_TRL-1-2D_F_EN-XX_US-GB_51_2K_UP_20101021_MOD_OV
THE-EAGLE_TRL-1_F_EN-XX_US-GB_51_2K_20101105_SFL

Use of the underscore element delimiter inside of an element:
BAD-TEACHER_TLR_1_F_EN-XX_US-GB_51_2K_SPE_20110302_DLA_OV
BATTLE-LOS-ANGELES_TLR_1_F_EN-XX_US-GB_51_2K_SPE_20101103_DLA_OV
COUNTRY_STRONG-2D_TLR_1_F_EN-XX_US-GB_51_2K_SPE_20100908_DLA_OV
JUST-GO-WITH-IT_TLR_1_F_EN-XX_US-GB_51_2K_SPE_20101027_DLA_OV
JUSTIN-BIEBER-3D_2D_TLR-1_F_EN-XX_US-GB_51_2K_PC_20101011_DLA_OV
JUSTIN-BIEBER-3D_2D_TLR-1_S_EN-XX_US-GB_51_2K_PC_20101011_DLA_OV
JUSTIN-BIEBER-3D_3D_TLR-1_S_EN-XX_US-GB_51_2K_PC_20101011_DLA_OV
LITTLE_FOCKERS_TLR-2_F_EN-XX_US-GB_51_2K_UP_20100930_UDS
THE_ROOMMATE_TLR_1_F_EN-XX_US-GB_51_2K_SPE_20100914_DLA_OV
THE_TOURIST-2D_TLR_1-REV-C_F_EN-XX_US-GB_51_2K_SPE_20100920_DLA_OV
YOUR-HIGHNESS_TLR-3_F_EN_XX_US-GB_51_2K_UP_20110120_UDS

This is a red-band trailer (restricted audience), but it contains a feature rating of "US-R" instead of the trailer rating of "US-RB":
SANCTUM_TRL-1RR-2D_F_EN-XX_US-R_51_2K_UP_20101202_MOD_OV

The 3D specs are incorrectly formatted (should be i3D with no hyphen):
YOGI-BEAR_TLR-3-3D_F_EN-XX_US-GB_51-EN_2K_WB_20101021_FKI_i-3D

Version changes are designated by the package date rather than the version field. Which one of these is the new cut of Justin Bieber?
JUSTIN-BIEBER-NSN-3D_FTR-CC_F_EN-EN_INT_51_2K_PC_20110203_TDC_i3D
JUSTIN-BIEBER-NSN-3D_FTR_F_EN-XX_DFC_51_2K_PC_20110220b_TDC_i3D

And sometimes everything is screwed up: (bonus if you notice the facility field is supposed to be just 3 characters)
SANCTUM_TRL-1R_3D_F_ENXX_US_51_2K_UP_20101202_MODERN_i3D-ngb
SANCTUM_TRL-1RR-3D_F_ENXX_US-R_51_2K_UP_20101209_MODERN_i3D-ngb
