What model(s) of hard disk(s) is/are currently being used to distribute DCI material? Are distributors having any issues with the current hard disk shortage (due to a flood in Thailand, it seems)? Is anyone distributing DCI material on SSDs?

Still HDD's and no SSD's. Haven't cracked a case open to see what brand of HD's are being used-Prob Seagates or WD's .. and now mostly 1T drives.

Had to crack open one from Deluxe the other day because the little hot-swap lever was falling off. It was a refurbished Western Digital.

They are all sorts of manufacturers. As they are being reused, the current price increase certainly is of no big concern, neither for the existing, nor for new purchases.

SSDs for now are too expensive still - You need at least a 250GB SSD, with the prospect of it being used for a much longer time span than hds, more likely a 512GB. For that money, you can get 10 conventional HDs. SSDs one day could change the transport containers from boxes to envelopes. Just that this could take so long that satellite or broadband transmission could be on the rise until then.
I have seen smaller distributors sending DCPs on a 2.5" external USB drive in a cushion envelope. Pushing it...

Also anyone ingesting via USB (there are sadly many of us) would see little to no speed increase over the HDDs. You're much more likely to see SSDs in media servers than as a means of distribution.

I would if we HAD a server. My chain refuses to install a central server until the theatre is 100% digital. 9 houses to go...

I guess Monte meant the playback server itself, not a central server.
