IS ANYBODY HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THIS CARD

Posted by Steve Guttag (Member # 268) on 11-13-2011, 05:07 PM:

There is a known bug on the ICP if version 2.x.x of the ICP firmware was EVER on the card. Depending on projector manufacturer, there is a procedure to reflash the board and properly fix the problem.

However, this would only apply if your problems are corruption related.

BTW: According to a friend that works with BARCO in Europe... The Barco or Christie ICP solution will work just fine on the NEC ICP card. The cards and solutions are all identical.

I have spoken with many professionals about TI ICP cards. Many topics can be addressed which is what I think is important. Without specifically addressing these concerns, we wont be successful when .... uh what was I talking about? [sleep]

I would think they would work too...however, without a baseline file, the ICP will be "empty" no PCFs, no PNGs, no TCGDs...etc.

Now the NEC update program does contain some of those.

Naturally, one has to fully back up their ICP BEFORE reflashing the board and hopefully NEC does indeed back up EVERYTHING when you do a back up. I see that on the newest DCC that a new button was added to the back up that seemingly does "all"

According to my friend in Europe either the Christie or Barco methods accomplishes the same task on the very same module... Two that I updated this morning were all warm and fuzzy humming along nicely for the last 6 months with the existing version they had in them....3.0 so they are now at 3.004 which should precure any enigma issues.

Ah...but both Christie and Barco has one replenish the board using their OWN baseline parameters...Barco has one do it via the "cloning" feature...which isn't going to work for the NEC since one can't get to the NEC via the Barco communicator.

I know that if I couldn't recover the NEC with what I did...I was willing to try one of the Recovery packages...what would I have to lose? The projector was down!

Still, NEC needs to have one of their own.

ICP-I Cause Problems

Thank you guys for your respond
My main problem is with Christie 2210

Posted by Carsten Kurz (Member # 5396) on 11-15-2011, 01:30 PM:

Great. Now try again and tell us WHAT the problem is you are having with the ICP on a Christie 2210.

Yes Carsten is right.

I think it goes something like this:

1) Statement of problem
a) Description of problem
i) Signs, symptoms, effects of problem
ii) Example, narrative, or testimony

Then... we Filmtechers chime in with...

2) Statement of solution
a) Description of solution
i) How solution fits problem
ii) Example
3) How solution can be implemented
a) Plan of action
i) Step 1 of plan
ii) Step 2 of plan
iiii) Step 3 of plan
iiiii) Step 4 of plan
etc.

4) Try the suggested solutions
5) Check to see if solution worked...if not GOTO step 1.

Eric... You forgot to include which crow bar, sledge hammer and blow torch to have handy when doing the ICP repair... That is extremely important! Just sayin...

I always use an ESD safe crowbar. [Big Grin]

Eric, you forgot the most important part of all...

The thread discontinuity part...where someone (could even be me) will bring up something completely unrelated to the original question that sends the thread in a completely different direction!

Just sayin'

I heard its posibly a software bug, any idea?

"IS ANYBODY HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THIS CARD"
Excellent question.
First, they must have bad connectors: the universal fix for any TI based D-Cinema projector problem seems to be "reseat the ICP card", which always progresses to "physical marriage"... an intriguing idea. That means, with Barco, trying to find the Dallas key that has either been misplaced or is hidden somewhere in the projector base. You can, if wisely prepared for this eventuality, try to read the microfont numbers off the key you "misplaced" into your pocket in preparation for the day you need one at that single house in the middle of nowhere.
And you should occasionally upgrade the firmware: nobody has managed to explain to me why this is needed when the projector is working just fine as is, but it's fun to "load firmware to slot" which is, again, an intriguing idea. Of course, if you have 2.1 or a previous version running, you get to either load a few entire intermediate versions or a "load me first" version before finally loading the current version. With Christie you ignore a series of "critical" and "fatal" errors - a treat for the scofflaw. Or you forget to read the release notes, load the new version without the intermediate one(s), and win a few fun hours downloading and installing various "recovery packages" to get you back to where you started before attempting the apparently pointless upgrade.
No, I hasn't have problems with this card.
The problem is with the whole security model embraced by the industry. We are all assumed to be crooks, pirates, and schemers. Instead of the time tested open standard media that will show on any projector made since about 1929, we now get top secret, watermarked, encrypted, and time-locked data that you can only play once you've bought a hundred grand worth of equipment that will be obsolete long before you've paid for it. This is to eliminate those pesky pirate movie DVDs you can buy just about anywhere - the ones that are very nice quality, thank you, and appear before the damned movie ever opened in an actual theatre where anyone could have taped it.
Has anyone ever been apprehended using the watermarking? Has anyone ever actually cracked the FIPS140-2 level 2 board that we had to replace with a $$$ FIPS140-2 level 3 board? Have these people been watching too many movies?
Of course you can sign up for someone else to pay for the new obsolete equipment. - if you have 3+ screens and a minimum 2 shows a night - but they'll be watching every minute of every day and if you run a test show to make sure everything is OK before your sold-out premiere you will have to explain why... and don't dare to make a few bucks with video game parties or satellite events without paying them a small fortune to use their projector.
I do kinda miss changing projector oil and reversing sprockets. Life was so much simpler.

I think Dave has said it all and said it best.

I hereby nominate Dave to the Andy Rooney Curmudgeon in Chief slot.

Dave gets a second nomination from me.

That was a masterful rant.

I totally agree! I hate those dam BARCO keys as much as I hate getting a KDM from Dolby just to do a firmware upgrade. Total nonsense in this day and age that serves absolutely no purpose...

Posted by Steve Guttag (Member # 268) on 11-18-2011, 09:09 PM:

As for the Dallas key...the reason I was told was that it ensures that a person has to be present to clear as security breach rather than remotely correcting a security problem. I'm not saying I agree with it.

We literally chain them to the pedestal...you won't loose them. I also carry one of my own with me.

As for Dolby's KDMs...it so they can control their software and actually charge for updates that have feature enhancements. Again, you don't have to agree with the notion put it IS their software and expense for adding features and they feel they should charge for them to offset the cost of keeping people working on the software. Whereas one gets 3-years of software updates with the purchase of the units, one can't claim that bug fixes are not covered and one often gets a boat load of software updates in that time with feature enhancements.
