This isn't really a question. Just a general pissed off rant. Beauty and the Beast is the second movie we've had lately that had a short that was part of the file, so we cannot remove it, that is in a different aspect ratio as the actual movie. So, one or the other is going to look like crap. Either put them as separate files on the drive or make them the same ratio!!!! AGHH!

Okay. I'm done now.

Can't you change the format on the fly? It can be done with the Christie projector, but the "changeover" obviously will not go smoothly unless you have both motorized masking and plenty of black between the short and the feature. You could probably even automate it with a good system.

this can be done easily with the correct automation surely? on the dolby server at least you could do it with the "cue offset" function

If your projector lens motors are fast enough. A lot of series-I are extremely slow on these adjustments, don't think anyone puts 30s of black between an in-line short+feature CPL.

Disney doesn't want the shorts removed from the main feature, which are the same requirements if you were running a 35 version first run - why both contents are together in one file.

Otherwise, if you did remove the short and got caught, you're not playing Disneys, or any BV films anymore- strict contract agreements.

You're talking about the "floating window" thing that "B&B" was projected in on the screen, where the black edges were there, while the short filled the screen completely? .. and did you project it in "Flat 3D", or 1998x1080?

When I ran "Lion King 3D", I just zoomed up the feature a bit to fill the sides in

If so, just gonna have to live with it. Plan on the possibility with other converted Disney 3D releases as well.

Oh Monte. Does someone feel like explaining this to him? Somewhere in the archives is a video explaining why NOT to zoom the lens.

Not true; projecting a movie in the aspect ratio in which it was photographed doen't make it "look like crap;" it makes it look like it was intended to be seen. Different aspect ratios have been part and parcel of filmmaking since, well, since forever, and any decent theatre should be able to properly accomodated the accepted standard ratios. Presenting a film in the WRONG aspect ratio out of expediency is what makes it look like crap. A theatre that was not designed with the appropriate movable masking out of expediency on the cheap is what will make it look like crap.

I had to create a new macro in the projectors (Barco series 2), with lens and screen files according to fill all the screen, and an automation cue in the doremi server to activate the macro between the trailers and the movie.
I know that isn't right, but the operations department don't wanted the black stripes. So, when a 3d disney movie comes like that, the booth staff will be able to reproduce it without the black bars in the sides.
