Hello all. I'm doing a Filipino film festival this summer. It's all "indie" type films, no studio/commercial titles (which tend to be very, very bad). There are several titles which are only available on DCP or DVD, kind of like steak vs dog food. However, we're not set up yet to show DCP.

Does anyone out there know if DCP can be transferred to something like Digibeta tape? I understand this goes against one of the purposes of DCP, which is to foil piracy. But, still, there must be a way to do it...? Thanks for any info.

Indie/non-commercial DCP’s might be unencrypted, and in that case it’s certainly possible to ”rip” the contents with the right tools.

For encrypted DCP’s, the only way is to project it and shoot the projection with a good HD camera. (You will need a KDM to be able to project it, of course.)

OK, they're definitely not encrypted. If anyone knows of any dubbing houses who could handle such a project, I hope you'll let me know.

I would know how to do it myself (it is relatively easy to create a common TIF sequence + WAV file from unencrypted DCPs). However, there are some possible pitfalls, and for a festival I would probably prefer a proper service company.

There are a few DCP software players for PCs (again, unencrypted only) - if you play the DCPs through an HDMI port on the graphics card, it is again 'relatively easy' to capture this in realtime with e.g. a BlackMagicDesign HDMI capture card, including audio - which in turn means - you could also buy one of these DCP players + a decent PC to play these DCPs on the festival.

I did many of film festivals here, and always doing research some months before. Than if there is simillar situation I try to get other media from producer, since they want to present theire movie to audience, there was no problem to get it in other media. Specialy when you explain that renting dcp for just one show is eaxpencive or so.
