Sure...using "Communicator" log into the projector in question.

On the right, click on "Diagnostics"

Within the Diagnostics section click on "Package"

Click on "Create Package"

You will then be given the opportunity to choose where you want to save the package (and its name).

Mike, just to be 100% are you referring to diagnostic type logs, or Link Decryptor security logs?

Posted by Mike Moreno (Member # 4887) on 05-05-2012, 05:01 PM:

yes Pete, diagnostic type logs.
we had a trouble with subtitules in two barco projectors and the company that install the equipment ask for the logs.

What brand of servers do you have?

Cool, I was just asking in case you were afflicted with the LD Security Logs Full issue.

Earlier Barco Series II firmware versions had subtitle issues.

You can type on your browser the projector IP address for projector logs.

I scheduled automatic log retrieval on our Sony. However, this only works to network folders currently, no USB stick.

This is a known bug with Barco. Your link decryptor is dead and you won't be playing any more encrypted movies until you replace it. The replacement procedure is incredibly easy though. The link decryptor board just screws onto the HDSDI board. Beware of static though and take the appropriate cautions.

I would personally recommend anyone running Barcos with link decryptors cut all power to the projector and then re-seat the HDSDI board (the link decryptor lives on this board). Don't remove the board entirely from the projector, just pull it out about an inch, then push it back in all the way firmly, then snug up the set screws without over-tightening them. I've found if this is done a couple times a year, it can trick that bug in the FIFO buffer and force the Barco to acknowledge that the server downloaded the logs so the link decryptor doesn't fill up and brick itself like just happened to you.

Note this can also save a link decryptor that has the "logs almost full" error. We have caught a ridiculous amount of link decryptors with this error and this procedure has saved it.

Warning though, you will have to re-marry, so make sure you have the Dallas key and it didn't walk.

Once you have a playback transport again, play a short clip (just a clip with a few seconds of black is fine) and it should start downloading chunks of around 500 logs after the completion of each time you play that clip. Expect to have to run that clip about 20 times before it stops downloading logs, and don't power off the system before you clear all of the logs or you will just end up right back where you started.

TI apparently fixed this bug at the first of the year, but Barco hasn't finished their testing of it and as such has not yet released it to the public. Surely that update will be coming soon though, as it's been several months now.

This is different from the LD-Log clearing issues that plagued Doremi users last year?

This may be a TI bug as Brad declares but I haven't had one yet that was "bricked" from it: I've recovered several systems locked up with "logs full" in the past few weeks. On current Doremi software there's an "advanced" button in device manager/media block that brings up "purge" or "download" the enigma logs. Forget "download", use "purge" and the system will take about half an hour to finish (no shows possible while it's doing this". It estimates the time as 2+ hours at first but don't panic, the time estimate drops pretty quickly to around 45 minutes but it doesn't usually take quite that long.
I haven't seen this "logs full" come up on Dolby servers but I have seen them spend a goodly time locked while downloading the logs now and then. I haven't seen this problem with the few GDC servers we have with Barco either.
There are issues with really obsolete server software that would permanently corrupt some of the enigma log memory space, and if that happened to the entire memory space then the unit was toast. From what I have learned, the enigma module is designed as non-serviceable and if the battery goes dead or the memory is corrupted and "full" - it's junk. Expensive junk.
The current Barco TI version (ICP 4.2.1) seems to be the same as on NEC and Christie current software. What's the difference?

Posted by Steve Guttag (Member # 268) on 09-19-2013, 10:51 AM:

The LD log thing is not unique to Barco, it is really an Enigma problem (TI) in how it marks the logs and what it reports to the servers as "read" and not read. The enigma has 16 banks of 512 logs or 8192 entries. If there is corruption anywhere in a bank, that whole bank is essentially dead...as each bank dies, there is less an less room until you are down to the last one. When that one starts to fill up or gets full, it is a brick, for all intents and purposes.

TI issues a new firmware, 1.7, earlier this year (I don't think it was as early as January...more like April but it was some months ago. Both NEC and Christie have it in their current software. For NEC it came with 4.201 and for Christie it was on 4.1.0(3). As Brad notes, it has not been issued for Barco yet. Though, I suppose one could take it from an NEC service pack, if need be.

However, there is another piece to the puzzle. TI has created new commands to allow the server manufacturers to extract the logs differently or more completely (as I understand it). So in order to take advantage of the new commands, the server companies have to put it into their software too.

I know that Dolby does not have it in their current software but it is slated to go in pretty soon.

I don't see how it could be a Barco issue as this is communication directly between the Enigma and the server and is not projector specific. Furthermore, I've had it happen on non-Barco projectors.

Brad identified the best attempt at clearing the Enigma when it gets to the "almost full" state. That is, break the marriage to force a DCI required 512 log download and then run 16 shows (one for each bank) with a 5-10 second blank clip in it. To do it automatically, allow for at least 5 minutes for downloading the full 512 logs so set up shows with 5 minutes of break between them and let the thing run its course.

What would be nice is if there was a "button" that one could force a full log extraction from the Enigma...regardless if it was already marked "read". Just force it to barf the whole thing.

I don't think either TI, the Projector companies nor the server companies have moved NEAR fast enough of this as it will cause loss of show, income and now that these enigmas are our of warranty on the 2010 projectors, it will also cost $$$ to replace. TI should extend the warranty on these until the problem is actually fixed. The theatres didn't break the thing...it isn't physically broken...it is a software bug created by TI.

Agreed. At the very least they should release a software to recover a broken Enigma. Maybe DCI does not allow it, but I'm sure a workaround could be done: it could authorised on a case by case basis for example, like an update KDM.

I'm sure that those faulty enigma go back to the factory where someone plugs a cable to it and press a button.

The LD firmware is separate from the ICP Dave, I think Barco are currently on a lower revision than others.

Dave,

when the LD bricks you can purge it as you mentioned as many times as you want, but you won't clear the error. The procedure takes, as you say, 45 minutes and the error won't clear up.

Posted by Steve Guttag (Member # 268) on 09-19-2013, 04:18 PM:

Marco, when you tried this on a "bricked" Enigma (using the Doremi Purge)...what version of Enigma software was running? 1.6 or 1.7?

Wow. Is this real? Sounds like a real problem. I thought it was solved last year when Doremi came out with this LD-Log fix. Apparently not. Are we going to see enigmas bricked in huge quantities soon? Are the OEMs going to let this happen?

- Carsten

Posted by Steve Guttag (Member # 268) on 09-20-2013, 08:09 AM:

So far, the answer is YES...they are going to let this happen! Again, this is a two part puzzle. You have to have Enigma 1.7 (two out of three projector companies have this) and the server companies have to take advantage of the new commands available in 1.7...I don't know of anyone other than Doremi that has that. I just know that others are "working on it." Also Barco is to release 1.7 Enigma any day now (been like that for months though).

I'd like to chime in here.

Barco 32B with Barco version 1.8.85 and TI 3.2.340, including Enigma v1.6.
Doremi DCP-2K4, fw 21.3r, sw 2.2.5-0, sm 2.0.15-0

I've received several calls over the last year that the show would not play due to the security log full issue, and purging the LD logs from the Doremi Diagnostic Tool has always solved the problem. Never has the projector been rendered permanently inoperable due to this issue, although a show will be lost since it takes 30-45 minutes to purge the logs. I now have the site do this once a week and haven't had any complaints in months.

Steve, are you saying that the bricked Enigma issue is introduced in 1.7, or corrected in 1.7? I'm a little confused. Like I said, this projector is running 1.6, and logs can always be cleared to restore normal operation. I've never had to break the marriage to fix or prevent this.

Posted by Marco Giustini (Member # 4544) on 09-20-2013, 09:40 AM:

Steve,

I've come across several LDs with the logs full issue, some were on 1.4 and some on 1.6. I have never been able to restore an LD using the doremi tool - or the Dolby procedure. Logging onto the Enigma, all logs are marked as "read", but the projector is still reporting the error.

Usually when I come across a bricked 1.4 Enigma I upgrade it to 1.6 hoping that that would fix it, but so far I have never been successfull.

Ken,

1.4 has a known bug where some logs could be created with a future date - hence never cleared. That was fixed with 1.6 but that hasn't prevented some LDs to report a "log full" condition which cannot be addressed in any way.

I do not know what 1.7 is doing, hopefully will prevent such stupid issues to happen again.
As I said, I understand that DCI do not want TI to release tools which can reset the heart of the security on a projector, but maybe they could consider releasing a special tool for these circumstances, it's just nonsense that cinemas have to lose shows for this.

The phrase 'not fit for purpose' springs to mind.

Posted by Ken Lackner (Member # 1002) on 09-20-2013, 10:31 AM:

So then how come the Enigma mentioned in my previous post is not becoming bricked when the issue occurs? Is the projector experiencing a different issue with similar symptoms? I thought maybe it was one of those issues that doesn't happen every time, but you guys are saying you have never been able to recover an Enigma once this happens, and I have always been able to.

I still think there is something I am missing here.

Posted by Carsten Kurz (Member # 5396) on 09-20-2013, 01:48 PM:

I think Steves post on top of page 2 explains this. One issue is the LD-Log filling up. That can be cleared using serverside software or tools, and that's probably what you have been lucky with so far. I think TMS based Doremi systems suffered from this issue a lot because it is common for these systems to run all day and to have playlists pushed around all the time, while the server routinely would only store and clear the logs with no playlist loaded.

The other more serious issue seems to be log memory banks becoming corrupted. As more and more of them become marked bad, there is less and less log memory available - until the bitter end, where clearing the log memory doesn't help anymore, as it doesn't fix the corruption.

- Carsten

Posted by Steve Guttag (Member # 268) on 09-20-2013, 02:36 PM:

Enigma 1.7 does not "fix" nor "introduce" problems, it merely has new commands available to server manufacturers to clear the problems it already has.

As others have noted, 1.6 stopped some of the corruption issues that occurred in Enigma 1.4 but DIDN'T FIX them...if you got a corruption already, it stays!

Ken, your logs filling up may be due to the server itself not downloading the logs frequently enough. That is different. This can occur if shows are tightly spaced and there isn't sufficient time to download the logs...if enough of those events occur, then the logs can fill up and "purging" them will download them, finally.

The bricking issue is not that...it has to do with corruption where the server CAN'T download the logs. The Engima reports everything is read to the server but it claims logs are almost full or full. Once it is "full" then it is bricked and it would seem servers can't talk to it anymore. At least the Dolby server can't talk to it anymore. This is the one that I've had the most experience with.

Posted by Marco Giustini (Member # 4544) on 09-20-2013, 03:19 PM:

Ken,

Keep also in mind that interrupted shows generate more security logs for the server to download.

If you play a short clip on a Dolby server, you'll see that at the end just a few logs are downloaded. If you keep stopping the same clip before it ends, the first time you allow the clip to reach its end you'll see the server downloading many more logs.

I guess some cinemas may not have enough time between playlists for the Doremi to download the logs (it begins 5 minutes after the server has been idle on recent software), or stop the playback before the end - which prevents the Dolby from downloading.
If you keep doing so for a while, eventually you end up with the "logs almost full" and it's only a matter of allowing the server to download them.

So is clearing or purging logs on a Doremi (all the ones in our circuit are DCP2000) an essential thing to do on a regular basis, are you all saying? We are all running Christie CP2000s, series 1 machines. Are we likely to all suddenly get the same problem and not be able to run a show if a log gets full? Are there various different logs I should be clearing. Has there been a post before on FT.com which explains what the various logs are for or what they store?

Posted by Steve Guttag (Member # 268) on 09-20-2013, 04:28 PM:

There isn't an Enigma in Series 1 so you are safe. Not to worry.

Posted by Marco Giustini (Member # 4544) on 09-20-2013, 05:44 PM:

And anyway no, logs are cleared automatically at the end of the show. Only if the aforementioned circumstances arose, then you may need to manually clear the logs.

I would say average intermission time is 30-45 minutes. When I execute a manual purge of the logs, it normally takes about 45 minutes. Who knows how many logs are being extracted at that time. If the server is supposed to download logs after playback of every show, shouldn't it only take a few minutes? And surely there would be plenty of time overnight to download the logs. Could there be something going on here that is preventing the server from downloading the logs automatically?

Posted by Marco Giustini (Member # 4544) on 09-23-2013, 04:20 PM:

I believe when you call the purge task, the server will go through all the logs again, marking them as "read" even though they're already marked as "read".

In fact, if you log in the Enigma board, the logs are always there, they're not actually purged from the board.

Posted by Steve Guttag (Member # 268) on 09-24-2013, 06:01 AM:

The only way it could download overnight is if the projector is left on. The Enigma is powered by the projector as it resides in there (on the PIB board on Christie, HDSDI boar on Barco and Legacy Board on NEC).

Posted by Ken Lackner (Member # 1002) on 09-24-2013, 11:11 AM:

Since Barco does not have a standby mode like other projectors do, the projector is completely powered (lamp off between shows and at night, of course) 24/7. So again I ask, even if intermission is too short to allow downloading of all the logs, shouldn't it happen at least once a day, after the last show? Could there be something preventing that from happening, thereby causing the site to experience this issue?

Posted by Marco Giustini (Member # 4544) on 09-24-2013, 04:09 PM:

Ken,

If it's a Doremi and you're running the latest software the answer is no. Logs are downloaded when the server has been idle for 5 minutes.
If it's an old software I think I recall that as long as you have a playlist loaded it won't download the logs, you need to eject the playlist first

If it's a Dolby, it could be a problem. Dolby only downloads 500-ish entries at each show END. If your shows never end - because you stop them manually - the server never downloads logs.

If only your last show ends on its own, the server will only donwload 500-ish entries, which may be less than the entries generated during the day. In weeks' or months' time your enigma will be full.

Posted by Ken Lackner (Member # 1002) on 09-27-2013, 10:53 AM:

Unless there is a fire alarm, power outage, or other unusual event, shows play all the way through. Playback mode is set to "Play then Eject."

Is a half hour intermission enough time to download one show's worth of logs?

quote: Marco Giustini
In fact, if you log in the Enigma board, the logs are always there, they're not actually purged from the board.
You're talking about in the Enigma Control Program, on the Sys-Status tab after you click the Display Security Log button, right? I see there are 8130 log entries (doing the math on the Event numbers) and scrolling through, they all appear to be read. The most recent is from last night, and the oldest is about a month old.

I ran the log purge on the Doremi, which took about half an hour as usual, and logged back in to the Enigma and nothing appears to have changed on the logs page. So what does purging the logs actually do?

Posted by Marco Giustini (Member # 4544) on 09-27-2013, 05:04 PM:

Mark them as "read".

That being said, when the "log full" issue happens, if you log onto the Enigma the logs are marked as "read" anyway. See what Steve said earlier.

30m is plenty of time. A show generates a few logs, a few seconds to be downloaded.

That is perfectly logical, and exactly what I figured. So again, it does seem like there is something that is preventing the server from downloading them after the show as it should, else I would not have to have the site purge the logs manually once a week to prevent the logs full issue.

I think I'm getting even more confused. Steve, can you chime in here?

Posted by Steve Guttag (Member # 268) on 09-28-2013, 05:41 PM:

I'm sorry, I'm not going to be a good source of information on Doremi personalities. Despite it being the most popular server in the world...it is the one I have the least experience with.

Dolby's servers, on the other hand, I have a bunch of them and after each show, they show you the logs being downloaded (bar graph).

The problem in Enigma is not the server's fault, it is the Enigma's. The server reads the logs, tells the Enigma the log is read and it is up to the Enigma to mark it as read and now available to load a new log in.

As I understand it, the new commands available in Enigma 1.7 software will FORCE the Enigma to barf the whole thing, clear all of the banks and make it ready for loading new logs.

Have you tried contacting your dealer about the logs not downloading? You shouldn't as a course of operation, have to manually download logs.

Sorry to drag up an old(ish) thread, but we had this happen to us over the weekend.

I have always seen how our dolby server downloads the security logs from the enigma board after each show has completed. I check the projector and LD logs weekly to see if any errors are thrown up, and to date have never had even a single warning.

On Friday Nov 1st all films play as normal, projector light green. On Saturday my colleague powers up the projector and gets an immediate red light. I check the communicator software "TI-Link - Security logs full"

We have had a new enigma module and are back to operating again, but Barco have been sent a copy of our logs because no warning or critical errors were generated by the Enigma module - it was working one day, bricked the next. Both our regional service tech and DCInex confirmed that no warnings or errors were generated before it just stopped working.

The server would not even connect to the projector, just gave the "transport not available" as if the projector was not even powered.

Pain in the ass, lost 3 shows two of which were sell outs.

Film didn't have this nonsense security. That's why it had better uptime. It's only going to get worse though and it's really for no reason because nothing at all will stop people from "camcordering" off of the screen and getting a pretty amazingly good picture.

Posted by Marco Giustini (Member # 4544) on 11-03-2013, 12:39 PM:

There is nothing you can do for it unfortunately. The sad thing is that I would like to know who is looking at those logs and what is the reason for those logs to be generated.
The industry lose more shows because of Enigma/security measures that go wrong rather than actual breakdowns.

At least TI could provide a tool the service personnel could use to reset those boards. It's unacceptable the final user has to lose so much money for such nonsense. Particularly someone like you who tried to prevent that issue in the first place.

Out of curiosity, what software versions were you using?

Posted by Brad Miller (Member # 2) on 11-03-2013, 01:19 PM:

Gavin what projector are you using? I've only found this to be an issue with Barcos. Never had it happen on a Christie or NEC.

Brad - Barco DP2k-12c, manufactured October 2012

marco, I completely agree.

We lost 3 shows because of (whatever they may be) firmware bugs. Not a real breakdown, lamp failure, lps failure. a software bug that I have tried to prevent happening.

It is not really acceptable from an exhibitors standpoint.

"sorry mr customer you cant see your film because of security measures which have malfunctioned and shut down the projector even though nothing is actually wrong with the equipment or been tampered with in any way"

Software wise

Dolby server 4.5.4.2
barco 1.9.101
ti 4.0.420

and the (I think factory refurb) new enigma - 1.4.19
I think its a refurb one as the sticker on the board indicated a Rev 1 part whereas the one I pulled out was a Rev 1.6 part. And when the installation complete and the marriage reset the server downloaded about 8000 security logs over about 6 "short black clips". I hope this does not indicate future DOOM again...

We are due our service very soon so I suspect these will likely be updated, but this is all as it was installed last December and apart from a few non-showstoper glitches has been functioning perfectly.

EDIT:
the "old" enigma was running release 1.6, according to a sticker on it

Posted by Marco Giustini (Member # 4544) on 11-03-2013, 03:16 PM:

1.6 was supposed to fix some of the bugs which could brick the enigma. Obviously that was not enough.

You want to have 1.4 updated to 1.6 asap anyway. I wonder why that was not done when it was installed.

8000 logs are expected to be downloaded if you swap the enigma. The server sees the new device and needs to download all the logs. A Dolby server only downloads 500-ish logs for each session, hence you'll need to run 16-ish sessions to clear the batch. After all the logs are being marked as read normal operations will resume.

Also wonder why Barco is not releasing Enigma 1.7 - and what 1.7 is delivering as Steve pointed out.
I fail to understand why TI has not released a fix, a bullettin, a something to prevent this issue from happening. It's simply unacceptable.

how bizarre.
I thought Dolby servers would download a max of 512 logs for each go. Reasong being the time involved: how long has your server been busy downloading 5700 logs? Never seen a Dolby server doing that.

Anyway, update to version 4.6 when you have a chance, 4.5 is evil [Smile]

I have had the issue on the NEC too...though I got the "almost full" message first.

We have had only one Enigma that just "bricked" out of the blue. The Barco logs confirm this...no errors, no errors and then red tail light.

I agree that Enigma 1.7 should be released by now for Barco. Both NEC and Christie have 1.7 on theirs for months. Dolby's Enigma purge should be on their next software release. However, I'm not sure it would help in the situation just described though I would hope the new TI commands would allow for it. I know that just loading Enigma 1.7 onto a bricked Enigma will not suddenly open the Enigma up for downloads...what I don't know is if the new commands in Enigma 1.7 allow a server to skip the normal formalities and just dump the logs anyway. Once I know, I'll post about it.

I would definitely update your Barco to 1.11.133...it should address most of your LPS/Lamp strike issues, if you have any and 4.2.1 on ICP is better than any other ICP 4.x. Enigma 1.4 is a ticking time-bomb.

I am aware this topic is quite old. But i found it useful and i have a couple of things to add and other to ask.

I found that leaving the projector on overnight, at least once a week solves many issues. For instance, in a 16 booths I know very well, only one almost full issue since digitalization (June 2011). And the LD in question has never gone full. The barcos in that site go with DCP 2000 and a couple of showvaults. They leave the projectors on all nights.

But i am pretty sure once a week would already be a great relief. I also assume LD version 1.8 released in june can help in case of issue.

Had anyone an issue upgrading to 1.8 ?
Best regards

If you search the forum for LD Log issues, you will see that Enigma 1.8 is a clear must. I would not hesitate to update.
