Hi there. We have been approached by a customer enquiring about audio described films. We have a system in the building to deal with it, but all we get from our processor on channel 7 & 8 seems to be suuround noise. Any ideas? [Cool]

I think that you may be confusing audio description (which are headphones that can play narration of action scenes for blind filmgoers) with hearing impaired system (which boosts movies volume in headphones). Those two have totally different purposes.

Many, but not all, movies now have a VI-N track. Look for VI in the DCP name (see http://www.digitalcinemanamingconvention.com/unabridged.asp ). According to the Interop channel map at http://isdcf.com/papers/ISDCF-Doc4-Interop-audio-channel-recommendations.pdf , VI-N is typically placed on track 8. If the digital cinema server is doing 1:1 routing, this would appear on AES/EBU channel 8.

Some processors only handle 8 channels, which is fine for 5.1 with HI/VI-N. But, if you're running 7.1, you need more channels. Fairly often people route Lrs/Rrs to AES/EBU channels 7 and 8 (either in the server or by hard wiring). This leaves no path for the VI-N on 8. But, if you're running a 5.1 auditorium, you SHOULD be able to get VI-N on channel 8.

To handle situations where you need just a couple more channels converted from AES/EBU to analog, USL provides the DAX-202.

To give you a real idea of how to get this, we need to know what server and sound processor you have, also what external D-A converter if you don't have a digital-in processor. There are a lot of possible solutions to get a headphone system with HI and VI sound.

If you have surrounds from your channel 7/8 I suspect you are listening to the back surrounds.

If your system is 7.1, your cabling should prevent that.
If your system is NOT 7.1, you should not run 7.1 CPLs.

Either way, there is something wrong:)
