Specifically, what's the difference between CCAP and HI? It was my understanding that CCAP was for the option to play captions on screen (versus OCAP, where the captions are always on screen) and HI was for devices like the Doremi CaptiView units. But now I am being told CCAP is for both onscreen and for individual units. If the latter is true, then what is the HI for?

The CCAP (or OCAP) D-cinema CPL versions include text captioning that prints out the movie dialog. CCAP captioning is optional, it's extra data not part of the image files: you can set the system to show them on screen but usually they are shown on special systems so only those who want them will see them (like Captiview). OCAP captions are not optional, they are added to the image data and can't be turned off (like captions burned into a 35mm print).

HI audio is an extra mono soundtrack mixed with an emphasis on the dialog so those with poor hearing can understand the words. One would use headsets for the HI track and hear/feel the music and effects from the main sound system. 35mm systems usually often used only the centre track for their HI headset signal, some processor or monitors did provide an HI signals with a mix emphasizing the centre channel.

VI audio is an extra mono soundtrack with a narrator describing the action - for example it could say "the coyote has fallen off the cliff" in a Roadrunner cartoon.
