What software is used/needed to load you own test images into a series 2 projector so that they can be attached to titles? They seem to be PNG, do they need to follow specific constraints in resolution, color depth or formatting?

You only need he TI software (or use the file Manager with Barco, Christie may have its own version).
I cannot remember on top of my head the format requirements.

In this case a NEC. NECs S2 Communicator serves most installation and update/backup purposes, but I can't find a function to upload individual test images, other than including them in backup and restore, of course.

On the NEC it's a two step process.

1. Use the TI program to log onto the projector, then go to the File-Sys tab. Use the "Put File" button to add a file to the projector's memory.

2. Open the DCC software and go to the Main tab. Then select the Test sub tab. From there select and edit one of the test file buttons to attache the PNG file you uploaded in step one.

I always make the image 2048 x 1080 RGB. DPI doesn't really matter for this purpose; it's the number of pixels that count. I don't know enough about color spaces to give you a meaningful answer on that question.

I always create a 2048 x 1080 image in PhotoShop, then use layout guides to mark off what I need. For example, if it's something I will use in both flat and scope, I will make it fit within 1998 x 858. But the saved image is always 2048 x 1080.

I load the Barqo test pattern's into many of the NEC's I install. Use the put transfer function in file manager.

Worked out great. The NEC/TI tool took PNG images I created with Photoshop on a Mac. Found it interesting that with the NEC S2 you can not assign any format/lens files to a title based on an internal test-image. It will always use the format active before the test-image title is activated.

How many additional images can one store there, is there a capacity display somewhere?

I used this to place an adjustment grid, a cinema logo, and an 'intermission' slide on the title select keypad buttons of a NC900C, so that they can be activated manually without the server even running or any time before/during/after a presentation.

Yes! You can literally put any PNG image in the test file.
