Not unlike D-Box Technologies’ motion-simulation seats, 4DX features chairs that pitch and roll according to the motion of the action within the film. But it also includes such features as “short bursts of sharp air” and “face water” to put the viewer in the middle of the on screen environment. Presumably the volume of these atmospheric flourishes is modulated – or else Titanic fans may find themselves struggling to see the film during the ship’s climactic descent into the ocean.

CJ 4DPlex Co. launched 4DX in 2009, and is using the technology to enhance the viewing experience of The Hunger Games, John Carter and The Avengers in addition to Titanic. The company hopes to reach more than 800 auditoriums by 2016.

Yeah, I know -- this just seems like a long way to go to sell a "normal" movie.

In Disney's case, they typically keep the attraction going for years.

Right. I guess it's kind of cool for a ten-minute movie but two hours of occasional wind and water in the face? Seems like it would be more distraction than enhancement.

3D is enough of a distraction. Being shaken around is dumb. Having water thrown in my face during a movie would seriously piss me off. These are all distractions. In no way do they actually bring people INTO the movie.

If people want to relive the experience so bad, then figure out a way to flood the auditorium with water just above freezing and make sure the air conditioning is painfully cold. Let's see how many people sit there and continue to watch the movie. Of those that do, over half of them need to drown before the end credits for that realistic effect. Similarly, I expect people to take arrows into their chest during Hunger Games.

This shit is just stupid. Directors really should take a stand.

And Jesse...when Kate gets naked, Leo gets turned on. You probably don't want to watch that scene in 4DX.

Feel-a-round would be an interesting concept, but not done the way shown there with an usher doing stuff to each patron. It would all have to be done electronically with nothing actually touching anyone.

Yet, an attraction, based on movie technology is (in most cases) still something very different than a movie.

An attraction tries to create an artificial reality, a movie is, in most cases, nothing more than a story told in pictures and sound.

My best movie experiences were those, were the movie was great and the theater was good enough not to distract me from that great movie.

Hate to bump this, but 4DX has come to the States. Starting Friday, you can see "Transformers: Age of Extiction" in 4DX only at Regal Cinemas L.A. Live Stadium 14!

Well they had to do it on a movie with a virtually guaranteed blockbuster opening so they can rave about how successful it is.

Hope that theater has a good supply of barf bags.

That's no different than when Warner did the HFR thing on Hobbit by restricting it to a very few high volume theaters so they can mathematically say "look how much more money the HFR locations made vs. the non-HFR locations". It's all bullshit.
