Hello,
It is about time that there is a dictionary of the terms and their abbreviations so everyone could get into the knowledge base of these posts.
Every trade has a jargon of terminology that prevents the outsider from knowing what is being said. In high school it was pig Latin and now it is three letter acronyms.
How about making a list of these and let everyone in on the jargon?
GUI = Graphic User Interface Pronounced "Gooey"
Please add your favorite three letter term and what it means to this thread.
Thanks in advance.

Digital Cinema Package (DCP) -- A collection of all of the files, both essence (human readable, i.e. picture, audio, captions) and metadata, that make up a piece of content (composition). While it is technically possible to author multiple pieces of content in a single DCP, this is rarely done. Often confused with CPL.
Composition Playlist (CPL) -- A metadata file in the DCP that tells the system how to put together the essence files to play back the composition. Each individual piece of content, whether a trailer, ad, feature, etc., has a CPL. CPLs are what are inserted in SPLs. The CPL file name is often the same as the DCP name when the DCP contains only one CPL, which is almost always the case.
Show Playlist (SPL) -- Just like building a playlist in iTunes or your favorite media management software at home, an SPL tells the player which clips to playback and in what order. SPLs usually also contain cues to control external devices such as dimmers, masking, sound processors, etc.

That is a start. Saw something new in the names on some trailers. LAS. What is that?

IMB = Internal Media Block
ICMP = Internal Cinema Media Processor. Unit used by BARCO for use with the ESCAPE format - to process feature content to be used for three projectors
KDM = Key Delivery Message

LAS. What is that?
Latin America Spanish. A section of Open Caption for on-screen subtitles which requires a key for the language to be presented on screen.

IMS = Integrated Media Server, the server is housed together, as opposed to IMB.
TMS = Theater Management System
DLP = Digital Light Processing, the projection system.
DMD = Digital Micromirror Device, the chip itself.

Yes, LAS in the digital cinema naming convention is Latin American Spanish. The full list of naming convention codes is at http://isdcf.com/dcnc/home/appendix-1b-language-sorted-by-language.html .
I wrote the document at http://isdcf.com/papers/ISDCF-Doc7-DigitalCinemaLanguageCodes.pdf to tie these naming codes to codes that can be used in a CPL (and get transferred to an RPL where closed captioning equipment uses the language code to determine what to do with the captions).

LMS = Library Management System - where DCP and KDM content is stored to be used for and by the TMS for SPL management, including SPL assembly and/or individual or multiple content transfers.

IMB is actually Integrated Media Block. ICMP is Integrated Cinema Media Processor.

RPL is Resource Presentation List (or, more properly, Auxiliary Resource Presentation List) as defined by SMPTE 430-11. Depending upon the server, there is one RPL generated per show or one RPL generated per composition. Projector subtitle engines and external closed caption transmitters fetch (using HTTP) this to get the URLs of each of the timed text file along with the time that file will play, the duration it will play, the language, the resource type (closed caption, subtitle, etc.). The server sends the URL(s) of the RPLs using the (Auxiliary) Content Synchronization Protocol (SMPTE 430-10).

Harold,
Thanks for the clarification. This is exactly what we need so everyone can know what is being discussed.
Too often these discussions can resemble those texts the youth are sending each other.

Ken,
I'm an engineer first, manager second and not an English major. Thanks.

Maybe something more like this

Haha! That actually did come to mind, but the way Schmidt is always talking The Youths seemed appropriate.
