Dear All,
Im getting an error 5817 in the projector barco Dp2K-20C, with barco alchemy server.
The problems appears randomly, and, when the movie is playing, suddenly, i have no picture,
sometimes, the lamp is turned off, also, the light indicator is red.
Technicians tried to clean everything, also new server installed (new alchemy) but the error still persists.
Kindly let me know what else i can check for this error ASAP.
Thanks in advance

Uhm... interesting as the Alchemy is 'integrating' the ICP. A new ICMP should have sorted the problem. I guess the next step may be the backplane maybe?
I imagine you involved Barco on the matter? It's a little bizarre that the ICP is still mentioned with the ICMP but in the end the ICMP still integrates something similar to the ICP.

Is the 20C on current projector software?

Following Carsten's thought make sure the alchemy soft/firmware is the most current. There have been a lot of changes with that.

I've seen this on a non Alchemy machine, it was a bad exhaust fan causing an overtemp of the ICP. New fan cleared it up. It turns the taillight red but didn't cause an overtemp error, just an ICP error.

Yes barco involved. all software has been updated. They suggested me to change the cinema controller
Any ideas?

what's the temperature in the booth? is the extraction working? Greece must be hot this time of the year.
The Barco controller board seems the next logical step.
Posted by Carsten Kurz (Member # 5396) on 07-15-2016, 07:55 AM:
Did this 20C already come with the Alchemy from factory, or was there another server/TI ICP initially and the ICMP has been retrofitted?

The first installation was implemented with XDC SOLO G 3 server.
3 months ago a new ICMP barco alchemy server was installed, inside the Barco Dp2K-20C projector.
Therefore, 1 month ago the problem with “error 5117” starts to appear.
4 days ago barco send me a new ICMP alchemy server, in order to solve the problem.
Suddenly, yesterday the problem appeared again.
Barco suggests me to replace the cinema controller.
Any ideas pls.

Carsten, is there anything special to do to install the ICMP besides the physical installation and maybe upgrade the software?
Posted by Dave Macaulay (Member # 813) on 07-15-2016, 04:51 PM:
The ICMP does everything an ICP would do, so you have to back up your screen files before swapping.
Also, for the server part, export the automation settings and import them into the new one. If you just swap the old drives into the new ICMP it should recognize them and you will keep all content and playlists, but of course your keys will be no good.
Posted by Carsten Kurz (Member # 5396) on 07-15-2016, 05:22 PM:
Marco, there is nothing special to do, but as far as I know, the ICMP is only taking over the functional part of the TI-ICP, it is not 'emulating' a TI-ICP. So the projector/cinema controller needs to be aware that there is different device present, hence the need for updated projector software. The fact that this machine was previously running with an XDC Solo G3 indicates that the projector is quite old and was not built/setup with the ICMP in mind. It may well be that an older cinema controller board is not up to the task even with current firmware.
Prerequisites for the ICMP in an DP2K 'C' is software version 1.12 on the projector and ICMP v1.2.4.x on the ICMP.

I also point to the backplane since all other attempts have been condemned out of the equation.
Had issues like this with old Dolby CP500's with cards acting up: cards were good. Bad backplanes were the issue and were replaced.

I can't remember where (logs or elsewhere) but I believe I've seen many components/log entries similar/identical to ICP ones. As the formatters are the same boards I reckon Barco haven't reinvented the wheel and simply beefed up the ICP design, leaving most of the main components in place. That may be the reason why the ICP not found error can still happen.
If Barco authorised a new ICMP I hope they checked the projector is running an adequate firmware first!

I have tried the cheapest way in order to solve the problem,
For one week I have minimized the temperature in the projection booth, approximately in 24-26c, and no any problem appeared.
Suddenly, yesterday my air-condition unit shuts down, (electrical failure) and the temperature of the booth was about 30c.
At the same time the error 5817 appears again on the screen, and the lamp shuts down with all the relevant problems.
(I have spoken with the projectionist, who revealed me that when the air - condition is not working properly (shut down or operating at 30 Celsius), then the same error message (5817) appears. The air condition failure happens for 5 times in the past, and 5 times error message 5817 appears.
In my opinion, it is clear that there is temperature problem.
I wonder, does the dp2k-20s hasn’t any warning for temperature?
(Apart from that max warning 95 Celsius for the lamp)
Is this supposed to be happen? With 30c or 35c the projector not to be operated properly?
And why the 5817 error appears?
Is there any possibility the combination of both the Dp2k-20s from 2012 with the barco ICMP alchemy 2016 to be faulty, and produces more heating inside the Dp2k-20c, so as to need more cooling? (above 25c)
Yours sincerely
Thomas Vlachogiannis

It is possible that temperature drift causes contact or electronic issues well below the spec'd critical temperatures of the system. Did you swap the cinema controller board already?

Talk about reinventing the wheel! So if your server goes down you replace the server and ICP because they are together. And if your ICP fails you also have to replace your server because it's part of the ICP. That's all so logical I just can't believe it. I guess the equivalent in the automotive industry would be if your engine failed you would also have to replace the transmission and vice versa. Single board projectors are next.

Parts are replaceable on the ICMP, the RAID card for example. I'm positive that if the server is out of warranty Barco will also provide the separate components - but I am not 100% sure to be honest. The ICMP is not a big epoxy cube.
Following your logic then the ICP should be split into different boards, one dealing with the formatters, one dealing with the picture, one that handles processes - so you can just replace what you need. Sounds like a great idea to me.

Just step back to Series 1 for that version of DLP! Of course many of those FPGA Integrated Circuits used on those boards are all obsolete now. The minimized parts count in Series 2 makes it far easier for a manufacturer (T.I.) to continue to support long term. I will just say that I like the ICP just the way it is. Highly reliable and easy to deal with if there are issues. IMHO putting the server on the ICP doesn't really gain you anything and may actually make future upgrades to either far less likely to happen. Nothing wrong in my book with the way Series 2 sits right now. Its design is still "separate enough" to maintain it's inherent flexibility and repairability.

The C projectors are rated up to 35°C. 30°C are quite high and Barco are usually quite overenthusiastic when it comes to temperatures: when you get a warning or an error there is probably something already liquefied in the machine
That said, I wouldn't expect the 5817 if temperature is too high - unless Barco are aware of the problem.
When you clean your filters can you see through them? Mesh filters can get clogged with greasy and polluted air and won't come up clean when vacuumed. If they are not shiny silver and cannot see through them, wash them with hot water (and soda if required) as directed by Barco. It may be that your filters are clogged and the ICMP is overheating and shutting down - and the controller board simply sees that the "ICP" is not connected anymore.
I know a guy who was experiencing lamp shut downs: it turned out the filters were clogged and the ballast was overheating.

4K 3D HFR is "nothing"?
Sure, because TI have proved in the past a great deal of 'pronto' upgrades when issues arose. I can think of the Enigma issue, which was dealt with almost instantly.

Mark, have you ever seen an ICMP?

They are on the same planet for me. 335 installs and one ICP failure in going on six years. I can't complain at all. And these are all NEC's! All of the oldest ICP's that I had to upgrade to T.I 3.0 are also still in daily use.

The enigma was not a part of the ICP Marco...

oh I forgot, your ICP's are blessed by NEC.
I know the Enigma is not part of the ICP but I was replying to your speculations about software upgrades. AFAIK The ICP and the Enigma are both from TI.
If you have seen an ICMP before then you must have also noticed it's made up of *two* main cards.

What Marco said.
The ICP and its connectivity are weak points. There isn't a projector brand that I haven't had to reseat an ICP to resolve some sort of color issue. Unfortunately, the ICMP will suffer the same connectivity issue since it uses the same connectors. Perhaps it won't be as temperamental.
Unfortunately, the ICP is stuck in its design era and it the bandwidth limitation factor of 500Mb/s. So if you want 4K to go beyond 30fps (2D and who gives a crap about 3D), it will be up to the OEMs to develop that. I hear that TI does not want to develop the ICP any further and that the training wheels are off for the OEMs. Again, this is just what I've heard.
As for ICP failures, I've had a couple which, percentage wise, isn't too bad. The sucky thing is, I've had 1 or 2 die on a software update! Where not even the mighty icpRecover could bring them back.

Just the opposite here as you know. On some of them when I replace the backup battery it will be the first time the ICP has ever been pulled out. I also replace the ICP fan on the CPU module at the same time as I replace the battery.
Can't blame T.I. for not wanting to develop it any further, especially since the next level of projection evolution may not even involve them...

I'm up to two NECs in as many weeks.
So you are gearing up to change out hundreds of ICP fans eh? Using generic fans or getting them through NEC so they are all ready to go (connector wise).
How about FAN6 (ACON)...ready to change a bazillion of them too? I haven't found the 3-wire version of the fan generically.
Posted by Mark Gulbrandsen (Member # 72) on 07-29-2016, 10:01 PM:
Just getting them direct from NEC... I replace AC On, Power On and ICP fans, and the ICP battery all at the same time. Those are the three critical fans. Only takes a little over a half hour to do the fans...

Due to green flashes I finally had to reseat an ICP, well... I didn't physically do it because it was over 8 hours away. I walked the customer who is also an IT guy though doing it and then remarried the enigma remotely for him. Projector is now fine. I am thinking that applying something from Caig Laboratories to these connectors would eliminate having to ever do this. Hey, it's used on Jet planes of all types and Satellites and rockets...
