Dear Sir/Madam,
we would like to install a new projector to our cinema. We are currently
deciding between Barco DP4k-23BLP and SONY SRX-RS15DS. The projecting
distance is 21 meters from the screen. The screen size is 14,5m x 6,5 m. I
would be very grateful if you could offer me some advice on which one is
more suitable for our cinema.

Hi Pavel,

if you are considering the 515DS, you are obviously aiming for 3D as well. The Barco 23B is underrated for 3D at this screen size.

You won't find many Sony friends on this specific forum.

Maybe you should spend the time for a trip from Kladno to Cinecittà at Nürnberg/Germany. They have many 515DS systems installed there, some within ATMOS installations. They will certainly welcome you there and share their experience. They even have a quad-head DS in their largest auditorium.

They both would do a good job. Sony dual projector is of course more equipment to service to maintain image quality and contrast. Your local service vendor is a very important factor in your evaluation of what you buy and what to deal with during the operating life of the system.

Sony 30000 lumen light output versus Barco 24000 lumen gives Sony the extra reserve for 3D.

Agreed with both of the above. All other factors being equal, I'd choose Barco over Sony with barely a nanosecond's thought, but the other factors (besides brand reputation) are sometimes not equal. I once had a FIAT car, which have a pretty terrible reputation, especially for reliability. However, there was an independent garage that specialized in Italian cars just around the corner from me, and for that reason I kept it a lot longer than I would have done otherwise.

A Sony Dual Stack would also project the 3D simultaneously: no flashing, no dark time. That will make 3D much more comfortable and - if not mistaken - will also give a better light efficiency over any polarised 3D system on a DLP machine.

Downside: Sony must be polarised, hence the awful silver screen.

What Carsten said: get familiar with the systems, learn the potentials and make sure you end up with decent service personnel, that will make the difference.

Thanks everybody for relevant comments I was thinking the same. We have
already had one Barco projector and we were very satisfied with its service.
That is why I decided for Barco. However, Sony looks really good, too.

The Sony 515 has some nice improvements compared to the previous models.
There are rumors they will show something new at Cinemacon in March.

Please note that he says Barco BLP (so laser) by that account is should be good for 3D as well.

It certainly is good for 3D, but still has a peak luminance of only 24.000 lumens, decaying over time. And as a BLP, it doesn't benefit from color separation efficiency as modulated 3P or 6P laser systems do. So that leaves options at standard switched polarizing or shutter 3D systems, with their still mediocre light efficiency.

Pavel - is this a single screen cinema, or do you operate other systems there as well? Do you use a TMS? What 3D system/screen type are you using now?

It is a one screen cinema for now but we would like to start projecting on a
smaller screen soon with the Barco DP2k-32B projector we already own. We
will also change the screen for a better one - we've been using Dolby
system. Laser projector is also good for decreasing our costs. Now we have a
xenon lamp 6,5 KW with service life 500 hours. Laser should have 30000
hours. Pavel.

One thing to note with the Barco Phosphor projector range(CLP, BLP), is that it does NOT support Dolby 3D. One thing to consider is to retrofit the Barco you already have, but for now the 32B can't be retrofitted, but maybe in the future.
