Hi Guys.i am looking into the possibility of maybe going down the laser projector route sometime in the near future but am wondering if anyone has any experience with them.

I am looking at the Christie Cp4325 RBD.Just wondering if anyone could tell me a bit more about them if anyone is actually using them yet & if so whats the light level like on screen lifespan of the bulb etc.

I'd rather get info from people that are actually using them to see if there are worth investing in just yet or hold off yet for another while.Any info any of you guys have would be most welcome and Appreciated.

No direct experience for me yet but they are a 3P RGB laser projector. That means no laser 3D. You can do polarized if you want and all the issues it brings. They are passively cooled and the location they are installed in needs to stay at 75 degrees F or cooler. They do use liquid cooling but it is not refrigerated.

I have the same questions about, and any experience information with the Christie CP2320 RGB laser projector. How do these Christies compare to the equivalent LP projectors on the market-performance, expected longevity and cost? Thank you.

It's still a difficult topic, because nobody really has sufficient long-time experience to see if the claims from the manufacturers can be achieved.

In general, I don't see a reason why an LP projector should have a shorter expected lifespan than a 3P projector.

That being said, in general, the 3P projectors have sufficient headroom so they don't need to run close to capacity all the time. If you can light the screen up within specifications with just 50~60% of your power budget, this will surely save a lot of lifetime on your light source. Your entire projector will eventually benefit, because it doesn't need to run as hot.

Now, the LP projectors are mostly not so impressive on the light output side. Also, a lot of light is still being lost by color filtering, which is needed to achieve at least P3 color space. In the end, the average LP projector will run much closer to maximum power than the average 3P projector. Therefore, I expect those LP machines not to last as long as the 3P machines.

Some entry-level LP machines are already rated by the manufacturer for roughly 7 years, if you run about 2.5 shows a day on them. So, I'd say that for the more beefier LP machines, you should expect no more than 10 years, whereas the 3P machines that aren't running at 90% all the time will probably give you more like 15 years.

If you don't like experiments and you don't have a gigantic screen to fill, Xenon is for now, still the safest, most predictable bet. Most Series 1 installs are now in the range of 10 years and the first Series 2 are also well on their way heading there. It looks like with proper maintenance, on average, they don't have a real problem getting there.

The big danger for laser is that, when the light source fails before the expected lifetime and after your warranty expired, is that you're stuck with a repair that will most likely be more expensive than what the projector is still worth. In a xenon machine, about the most expensive thing that can break is the light engine. LPs and especially 3Ps now add an even more expensive element: The laser light source.

CinemaCon April 1st would be a good source to see the latest offerings. I see one company will show an RGB direct drop-in that replaces the existing lamp house in Xenon projectors.

they way the film industry has changed in the last 10 years with the introduction of digital projectors & the retirement of the old 35mm projectors i think that Laser will come about a lot quicker than we think it will.I think its going to come down to a day when we will have no choice but to replace the current xenon projectors with Laser.What sounds good on paper though is completely different to the people that will be doing the day to day running & upkeep of them.which is mainly the few of us that are still lucky enough to be projectionists since the arrival of digital.

I appreciate all the feedback from you guys.Its just that when we were looking at a new projector the subject of laser came up & i have no idea whether it would be worth getting or just holding off for now.

Personally i would prefer to stay with the xenon but at the end of the day it will be the owner who has the final call.

Most exhibitors are not that ready to retool a 3rd time. So intrest in laser tech is limited. You will find laser projectors in the premium screens and I know Showcase Icon theatres are using LP projectors exclusively but these are mostly new construction.

As mentioned all the series 1 projectors are 10 years old and replacement may become necessary in the near future.

I'm a bit leery of the laser projectors for now. We have installed a few of them and they have had more problems than we see with xenon units. The image is great though, and most problems have been minor and not show-stoppers.
For now, until the bugs have been worked out, I can't recommend a laser projector for a typical cinema. Wait a while.
I'm not sure of the economics either. Yes, you need to replace xenon lamps regularly. But unless the projector dies before then, you will eventually need to service the laser light source as well. I've seen 10,000 hour life specifications for LP sources... what then? Is it just replacing the phosphor disk or do the lasers need to be replaced as well... can the source be rejuvenated or does it get replaced? You save on power and lamp change time costs but maintenance does not go to nil: regular maintenance is required and some of it is complex and time consuming. Is the TCO really much less than for xenon?

The 3P/6P projectors give an excellent bright image but speckle is an issue.
Has someone figured out a way to eliminate the speckle? Screen shakers seem like a primitive fix.
LP projectors have very slight speckle if you put up a solid blue pattern, but red and green are the phosphor colors and thus have no speckle - green is the worst color for speckle in my experience.

I saw two companies offering laser conversions for xenon projectors last year: one that that had a direct lamphouse drop-in for a Barco C-series, and another that used an external laser unit connected to the projector by a fiber pipe. The price of both offerings led me to wonder who would want to spend not far off the cost of a brand new xenon projector of the sort that had been modified, to convert the light source in an older one that would be at high risk of light engine failure, ICP failure, etc. during the lifetime of the laser unit. The concept is technically elegant, but unless they can get the price of it down by a lot, I can't see it making any economic sense.

Since we are used to seeing the world lit with broad spectrum light, I wonder how person to person variation in color perception will be affected by narrow spectrum laser illumination.

On speckle repmval by screen shaking an alternative would be projector shaking.

We have a Barco LP conversion that has had a few teething problems.
Picture is very nice, as Borat would say.
If you look at all the parts they replaced, it might've been easier to swap the whole machine.
Unless they've changed designs, the Barco LP conversion is not a direct lamphouse replacement

And all these years we used cast iron bases to keep from having the projector or lens shake,

The 3P laser projectors usually combine their primary colors from multiple, smaller laser modules.

I don't know about the feasibility, but I guess that if every module would be tuned to a slightly different frequency, the amount of interference due to coherence should be greatly reduced. Also, this should somewhat solve the issue for people who are less sensitive than average for a certain wavelength, as the spectrum per primary would be broadened.

They already use that approach (and others) for spectrum spreading, but it is a limited option, and especially for green, they usually need to use multiple schemes to get speckle below perception threshold - using screen shakers is the final defense line.

Is speckle an issue in all 3P and LP pictures? If not, when does it become a noticeable issue in the picture and requires correction? On screens larger than fifty feet (16m) wide or larger? What are the uncorrected speckle screen/picture size limitations? Thank you.

Screen size has no impact. The speckls is created in the eye, it is an effect of interference in the coherent light from a laser. The speckle visible changes with color (wavelength), most visible with green in a 3P projector with rdd anx blue not so annoying. LP projectors filter green and red from a yellow phosphor that gets excitdd by blue laser light, the yellow is not laser light, not coherent, and has no speckle.
Screen shakers use accoustic pressure to vibrate the screen surface very slightly, less than 1mm, using band limited sub audible LF noise through a bunch of speakers close behind the screen. Although the reflected laser light is still coherent, the shaking screen makes the speckle created inside your eye move around faster than you can see it, similar to a movie looking smooth rather than the series of still images because they change faster than we can notice.
Odd: looking at reflected laser light with visible speckle, move your head sideways. The speckle moves with or opposite to the head movement... one way for short sighted people, opposite for far sighted.

There are hundreds of papers on speckle measurement and reduction for projection systems to be found by google. Barco had an interesting report on their early prototypes.
You may decide to read through them, or simply accept that speckle is currently one remaining issue with 3P and 6P projection systems.
It annoys the hell out of me in laser IMAX installations I have visited so far, and is exaggerated there because IMAX seems to prefer leaving metallized screens in place, as conventional gain and metallized screens make speckle worse. Why they do that, with the speckle becoming extremely annoying that way, is beyond my understanding. The laser IMAX Berlin even received a NEW metallized screen a few months after their laser IMAX update, so they are definitely doing it deliberately. They don't need silver screens for their 3D, so I can only assume that even with laser projectors they still need the screen gain to yield their brightness spec.

For now, I would hesitate to buy one of those very costly 3P or 6P laser projectors - then being notified that the 'speckle-free' successor is just around the corner.
Although it's not a yes/no issue, there are many speckle reduction techniques, and every single one only reduces speckle by a certain amount, overdoing it is an economic issue. So, the question is not wether a new projector has speckle or not, but wether it is able to reduce speckle on a given screen surface below most spectators perception threshold.

You, generally, don't see speckle on LP projectors. Many LP projectors use two Blue lasers, one to generate blue (least noticeable for speckle) and the other laser, via phosphor wheel to get the remaining spectrum. Even the Blue laser often goes through a diffusion wheel.

Others use Red and Blue lasers with a second blue laser to get green. Green is the expensive laser to make. On those I'd think that red is the most visible (it is the one I often key off of on speckle).

I've seen some shake the light source itself to minimize speckle too.

RGB laser systems are going to be the most susceptible.

Using a matte white screen is the best defense against speckle in the theatre. Matte-white is the best for light distribution too.

IMAX seemingly uses ultrasonic speakers to vibrate the screen, like Dave mentioned. In my opinion, this system is pretty worthless. Like Carsten already mentioned, the silver screen increases speckle and it doesn't look like the screen shaking really solves the problem. Since the speckle is present in all three primaries, you'll get a rainbow-pattern of pearls on the screen, which annoys the heck out of me.

Dolby isn't entirely clear in what they're using for their Dolby Vision / Cinema setup, but it seems to be a system using physical actuators. It is very effective, as you won't really notice any speckle in a Dolby Cinema presentation, using 2 x 3P projectors. They're using a sort of double-stepped light engine though, so that might also help to reduce speckle even more.

The amount of speckle in LP projectors depends on make and model, but most of them either have barely noticeable speckle in one of the colors or no noticeable speckle at all, even without screen shakers.

I was aware that they use like 3 or 4 different wavelengths, but I was told that varying every module separately wasn't possible yet, since the output wavelength is design dependent and not something you can easily adjust with e.g. a POT-meter. Quite some research has been done on modulating laser light spectra, maybe the solution would be to broaden the spectrum of each and every module. Those solutions are still pretty expensive though.

While the coherence of laser light is often one of the key features, in projection, it's more of a hindrance. That's also why I don't think current laser technology will be around for very long.

There are other avenues that don't need complicated methods to reduce speckle, think about giant LED arrays and LED-module based screens.

Varying wavelength certainly has limits (after all, their distinctive and precise wavelengths are a key aspect of laser sources), but it's not the specific wavelength that is immediately responsible for speckle. They can also 'just' alter polarization, and some of that is possible by power modulation. The trouble probably is, you want many laser sources to help in speckle reduction, and if you want to control every one to decrease speckle further, each one would need it's own modulating power supply, which is probably a major cost factor. We are probably talking hundreds of laser diodes here.

Dolby Cinema may benefit from the outsourced laser banks of the Christie projectors, they stack up many of them, and each probably contains already many individual laser sources. Then maybe the fibre transmission offers additional ways to reduce speckle.

That said - I saw some press reports for the Christie 6p system mentioning 'enhanced wavelength diversity'.

There is probably a reason why a Christie 6p system costs much more than a Barco 3P?

I don't find much about speckle reduction in the smaller RGB laser projectors now entering the market. Don't know if they compromise on it, or found better ways to achieve the same level in the smaller and lower cost devices.

That article is already a few years old, I guess it's more or less a standard option right now, as I cannot find anything particular in their product offering.

The Christie 6P setup always uses a dual-headed setup (2x3P), whereas the Barco setup is a 6P single-projector setup. There are some obvious cost-savings in a single-headed setup. I don't think Barco has any 3P cinema offerings right now.

All the native Barco 6P setups I've seen are using a matte white screen, most of them without screen shakers and although you can see a small amount of speckle in some scenes, it is generally not really distracting.

Well, in a 6p system you can use both 3p heads for 2D as well, and then benefit from twice as many uncorrelated sources. The Barco 60L offers the same operation mode, but the compact form factor maybe doesn't allow for as much source diversity as the discrete Christie laser banks allow.

For the average cinemagoer, speckle is probably not such an issue (given that even the extreme amount of speckle in IMAX laser installations doesn't seem to bother the IMAX people and most visitors much). The question is, do you want to pay a premium for a premium projection system that still has some early adopter quirks, with a lower cost successor already around the corner? Even with few patrons noticing it, it is still not the premium experience as the 'laser projection' buzzword suggests.

This is interesting. I don't think that I have yet to see laser projected movie. I wonder if a patron would know of that detail before the presentation. I mention it because years ago (uh... many many years ago) when planetariums first augmented their revenue with laser programs the speckle in those was severe. In my case it almost immediately triggered a migraine and I recall having to advert my eyes for the balance of the show praying for an exit. I had since avoided those. I am sensitive to some of those cheap Christmas laser displays. Am I safe to assume that this isn't a concern with these LP and 3P projectors or should I worry?

I think those planetariums use laser scanning projectors, where they rapidly scan a modulated and combined laser beam across the projection surface. So, here you have essentially a single beam tracking the projection.

Many planetariums use aluminum sheeting as a projection surface, which only increases speckle.

RGB cinema laser projectors work differently. They combine multiple laser sources to a powerful beam, which is then spread and cast on the imaging device, which is either a Digital Micromirror device (DLP) or selective-reflective LCD device (LCoS or similar).

A good 3P/6P laser presentation should only have a minimal amount to no visible speckle. IMAX (with Lasers) is an outlier.

Some facts:
- shaking the screen helps to mitigate speckle. Shaking anything else (the projector, your seat, your head, ...) does not help. Speckle is created at the screen (surface)
- Christie Extended Wavelength diversity (mentioned somewhere here) was actually 9P (not 3, not 6 but 9 primaries)
- speckle is never 0. Even a Xenon lamp projector has speckle. It's a matter of getting the number below the visibility threshold for the majority of the population.

Speckle is an interference pattern produced on the imager - a camera will show speckle, created at the imager surface by the incident light waves interfering. In your eye it's created on the retina. Speckle is much more intense with coherent laser light but any narrowband monochromatic light can produce some speckle.

I've also been thought that speckle, like we perceive it, is essentially created on your retina as an interference pattern of coherent light. In simplified terms, it's multiple light waves with the same frequency hitting your retina around the same position at a slight phase-shift, creating a wave pattern.

By shaking the screen, you're shaking the instrument that's creating the reflections that eventually end up interfering in your eyes. By shaking it fast enough, the interference patterns in your eyes also "shake" sufficiently, you don't perceive them anymore.

I'm not a scientist in this particular field, but it conforms with the elementary science I've been thought. So if this isn't correct, please elaborate. [Wink]

The fact that it's created at the point of "imaging" is also why speckle is perceived differently by people with different sight.

I was aware that most projectors, especially DLP projectors, already produce a small amount of speckle. It's mostly visible in large, totally white surfaces, but most people aren't aware of it. It's also almost impossible to photograph or film.

I didn't know that that particular Christie solution was a 9P solution. I guess they used a polarized 3D solution for this install, instead of a primary color filter solution.

True. I just wanted to make clear that shaking things apart from the screen (the projector, your seat,...) does not help

Being that we see everything with our eye our retina is probably the biggest to blame, especially since DLP inherently has it and it must be brought down to a level not detectible. Just like 24fps.

Does anyone have links to speckle reduction systems?
I've seen a couple of different screen shaker systems, some more elaborate($) than others. Also, I've read about vibrating/rotating/polarizing lenses that mount in front of projectors but can't find pricing or availability.

We build theaters and most of our upcoming project will require RGB lasers. Our standard is passive, dual head 3D so I'm also concerned as to how these systems will affect our 3D polarization.

Yep, I've been reading a lot about it but am having a hard time finding actual products, screen shakers specifically.

We use Christie mostly and see that they are starting to use wavelength diversity to combat the issue. Our screen manufacturer is able to provide frames and brackets for shakers but not shakers themselves.

Just trying to figure out who manufactures shakers, general cost, etc.

Maybe there are some offers at Cinemacon. You should probably also contact Christie, Barco and NEC, as they should be familiar with methods and suppliers.

As far as I know, screen shaking for speckle reduction is or was under a RealD patent.

Thanks for those videos. I'm wondering how long until projector technology eliminates the need for screen vibration?

Also, I sure hope those things are quiet! I can't imagine people in the future saying:

"I remember movie theaters when I was a kid. The smell of popcorn, the hum and rattle from the screen vibration system... ah, those were the days."

Every manufacturer has his own secrets or patents to reduce speckle. Maybe Barco has a better in-projector scheme than Christie.

The DP4K-17BLP is an LP machine, not a 3/6P system. Like explained in this topic already, those laser-phosphor based machines usually don't show a lot of speckle.

Well, that's an ultra-sound screen shaking system, much like what IMAX uses. In the end, it still shakes the screen, the means of actuation is sound instead of physical contact.

Tom works for Barco, so you may expect he knows what he is talking about.

But I think you misunderstood him. Tom mentioned that shaking anything other than the screen will not get rid of speckle. There are certainly different methods to reduce speckle inside the light source and light engine and that's what multiple manufacturers are doing, all using their own set of solutions, but they do not necessarily involve a lot of shaking.
