Projectionist Note Enclosed in Cans:
Brother Bear is a CinemaScope (anamorphic) film.
Even though the image for the first reel and a half of the film has an on-screen aspect ration of 1.85:1 the entire feature is to be screened through your regular CinemaScope projection lens.
All scree maskings and aperture plates are to be set for normal CinemaScope projection in your auditorium for the entire showing of the film.

So they don't want you to use adjustable side masking, even if you have it? Guess the worry is that some theatres will forget to open it to full 2.39:1 at the appropriate time.
And CinemaScope is a trademark --- the generic terms would be "scope" or "2X anamorphic" or "2.39:1 aspect ratio".

John, I tried adjusting the side adjustable masking today to see if it could be made to work but the first part of the film didn't fill the full width of the 1.85 aspect ratio. It appears to be 1.80 tops. This could be why they made this recommendation.

Quick note for UK prints: The BBFC certificate and FACT tag are both in 1.85:1 and look awful and barely legible played in 'scope. I've found it looks much better to set the masking to 'scope, but leave the lens as 1.85:1 and quickly change before the BV logo, or for automated houses, join in some spacing after the FACT tag, and set the aspect to change there.

Transition is at 6 min 24 seconds into Reel 2. There are a couple seconds of black there. The beginning portion is narrower than 1.85. Maybe more like 1.75-within-Scope.
