7 reels, BW, Dolby SR (soundtrack is clearly not mono, despite the can's label).
Odd numbered reels are somewhat scratched. Image isn't too bad for a rep print, but crackling and hiss in the left channel is quite noticable during quieter scenes.

This picture was released in 1959. It would not be stereo. If the processor is set for stereo, it will of course think it's a stereo track, and if there is damage to one side of it, the noise will play back on one side or the other in the theater.
It could be that at one point UA made a fake stereo track, but that's doubtful.

It all depends on what the studio has done to this restrike print of the film. It could be like Woody Allen type sound, Dolby SR with it channeled to mono. So being made in 1959 does not matter, it depends on if the studio messed it up on this restrike.

The soundtrack in the leader was labelled as SR so I checked parts of the soundtrack by eye and they were clearly not mono. On the other hand, it wasn't a very strong stereo mix, so it could either be a faked stereo mix or stereo from an original non-mono source (eg, print with a magnetic soundtrack).

Print #7001 from Park Circus is a good 2008 print (from Foto-Kem) with the SR mix listed above. There is definitely sound in all channels and it sounds fine when played in SR, so it isn't a labelling error.
There is some question on the aspect ratio. IMDB says 1.66. Other sources say 1.85. I tried it both ways and honestly think that it looks better at 1.85. Hand-written labels on this print list both ratios.

BoxOffice Magazine says 1.85 in their original review, and it seems unlikely that a Hollywood studio product from that period would be anything but 1.85-1 for flat.

FWIW, the Blu-Ray is windowboxed to 1.66, although I do agree that seems odd for the time and place.
