SMPTE 195 projectable image area standard is 0.825 x 0.602 inches. That's an aspect ratio of 1.370:1.

An aspect ratio of 1.375:1 is based on 0.825 x 0.600 inches.

Rialto Pictures

I handled print #3. It's on Kodak B&W film stock dated 2001 on a polyester base. The print has light wear and dirt but looks great, with excellent contrast. It has a color Rialto logo spliced on.

The beginning of the feature has a vintage British Board of Film Censor snipe - "A" rating for adult audiences.

The leaders go by the 10 minute reels. So, on the six reels, the head leaders are marked 1,3,5,7,9,11 and the tail leaders are marked 2,4,6,8,10,12.

1.370:1 was silent. Pretty sure this had sound (it does) so 1.375:1 is indeed correct.

The standardized (in 1907) silent ratio is 1.33:1, 0.698 x 0.931 inches.

The Movietone format in use from 1926 to 1932 is 0.708 x 0.826 inches, producing an aspect ratio of 1.17:1.

The Academy format introduced in 1932 is 0.600 x 0.825 inches, which does indeed divide to 1.375:1.

The SMPTE standard I quoted above is current, 0.602 x 0.825 inches, 1.37:1.

Movietone ratio was ONLY used by Fox in 1929. During that time, each studio had their own aspect ratio measurements.

The SMPE spec of .800 x .600" became standardized in November, 1929 and was used until the Academy ratio added .025" in width.

The specifics of all of this can be found in the January 1930 issue of the SMPE Journal.
