What is the audio encoding on the DCP? The reason I ask and I assume it is standard 5.1, but at the Angelika Mosaic the sound at times gave a pseudo 7.1 sound presentation - it's also compounded by the fact that a Hong Kong 96kHz bluray edition of the movie features Dolby Digital EX (6.1 matrix) sound.

It's odd you bring that up. There are some instances when I go to a movie, my mind thinks I am hearing a 7.1 mix, while the DCP only has 5.1 audio. The first time I had this experience was during "The Grey" (2011) at Cobb Village 12 (screen #8) when I heard wolves in the side surrounds, then to the back surrounds. It was a cool little effect, and from that moment on I believed it was a 7.1 film, until I looked on here.

Then at New York's Ziegfeld, I watched "The Amazing Spider-Man" (2012), and I swear I was hearing back surround movement. I actually asked about the film having a 7.1 mix here, and it was only 5.1. Center channel issues aside, the Ziegfeld has a fantastic sound system, and even with 5.1 Spidey I experienced more directionality and positioning than a previous D-IMAX screening with their so-called "phantom imaging technology."

It's also interesting to note both Cobb and Ziegfeld are equipped to playback 7.1 movies. Probably it's the unsung, unadvertised resurgence of Dolby SEX in select theaters.

I guess we're discussing this in the wrong thread, so 'management' will probably pass by any minute and politely ask us to stfu an take the discussion elsewhere.

But... "Phantom Imaging Technology"? Really? It's just simple audio panning at work... Did you ever listen to a stereo (two channel) mix and asked yourself where the phantom center speaker is?
