australia's other boxing day film, overshadowed by the hype of amelie!. i loved this film about a well to do indian family, the daughter is getting married, so it's very celebratory in it's feel, while still having those dramatic storylines to balance it out.it's avery romantic film without being soppy. while amelie is awesome, this is just a great film, definitely worth a look!

Mira Nair (director) was interviewed on the radio last week about it. Apparently the entire final week's shooting was lost when the Super 16 negs were fogged in an airport x-ray machine. By the time the insurance claim was approved to reshoot the lost scenes, the monsoon season was over and they had to hire very expensive rainmaking equipment or else the rain would have been constantly stopping and starting all the way through the film!

I found this a joyful film with all the music and dance interest characteristic of Indian popular films, but with a modern sensitivity
to character and themes. Its sub-plots dealt with child molestation
within the family, adolescent rebellion, the nature of manhood, and
marital partners disclosing their pre-nuptial affairs. Music, dance
and comedy were completely integrated within the wedding celebrations
so they did not interrupt the film, as was (and is?) the case with typical pop Indian films. The treatment of generations within close Indian family life, of levels of modernity of those who returned from abroad versus traditional Indian culture, courageous action without violence, the power of forgiveness, and the glorifying of Indian womanhood make this an international film at once entertaining and
emotionally satisfying. It's in Hindi and English, with English sub-titles.
I experienced Monsoon Wedding at the Kew Gardens Cinemas in
Queens, NYC. Formerly a single screen fallen on hard times as a porno
house, its new owner renovated it as a modern/nostalgic twin showing
foreign and art-house domestic films. The presentation was good, and
the almost sold-out audience of matinee seniors was most appreciative.
My wife and I enjoyed a fine Indian dinner afterward at a tiny Indian
restaurant around the corner.

Monsoon wedding is just about to end at my location after a glorious three month stay. It has been one of our best loved films with patrons always staying till the end and also occasionally applauding, which has become a rare occasion these days.
See it while you can on film!

It is doing very well here at a local art house where I fill in occasionally; they are currently showing it on two of six screens and almost sold out several shows today. The prints look great and are excellent examples of a good super-16 blowup. They look a heck of a lot better than Italian for Beginners (which was shot on Digital Betacam).
