I don't know about anyone else but I love a good British mob/crime movie. Layer Cake was great, Snatch, Revolver...so on. This one goes right up there as one of the best in the past 10 years. A great cast really brought this story to life and fleshed it out. Jason Statham really has star power. This film really is high on the Greco factor as well.

An interesting side note, I wonder how many women they had to look at before they found the right looking breasts to represent the 70's? Hmm the life of a casting director lol

Overall a solid 4/5 [thumbsup]

Today at Regal 15 in Eugene, #1, 35mm. Good presentation (last reel's color timing was way off from the rest).

Great British heist movie, very involving. Solid 4/5 from me too.

Between the thick Brittish accents and Cockney slang, I had real difficulty at times understanding some of the dialogue.

It also would have helped if there had been more detailed explanations of who the various parties were.

But not a bad flick. 3.5 out of 5.

AUDITORIUM: 9
PRESENTATION: 35mm/Ultra Stereo
PRESENTATION PROBLEMS: Chatty women behind me
RATING: Two and one half stars (out of four)

As I approach the snack bar, Smiling Counter Girl...in a really syrupy voice...says "Can I get you a large popcorn and Coke today?"

It kind of caught me off guard. "Wow, that's new," I said.

She just stood there smiling like a Stepford wife.

Clever idea, though. Why upsell when you can just get to the point. But I spent the entire pre-show coming up with possible answers to that question. The ones I'll probably actually try in the future are:

1. "No." (Then just stand there, staring.)
2. "No. Guess again." (And make them. Eventually, tell them you wanted lasagna.)
3. "No." (Then leave.)
4. "Is that would YOU would get if you were in my situation?"
5. "Okay, but you're paying for it."

It looks like Cinemark has adopted Century's popcorn sizes. What used to be a Cinemark medium is now a small. Prices have also adapted accordingly. And the old "small" is available under the guise of "junior". Another clever unwitting upsell on Cinemark's part.

There's four total patrons (myself included) in the auditorium at the advertised start time. When the actual feature starts...20 minutes later...there's 24 patrons. I guess people are getting the point about actual movie start times.

THE PLOT: Uh, there's a bank job. Wackiness ensues.

I don't find myself comparing this to "Snatch" or others. It's not as clever, and it doesn't have the comedic bend. But it's still rounded out well...much better than critics have implied. I don't think it'll have a long cult life like many of the British capers seem to.

I wanted lasagna too but they told me they only served it during THE ITALIAN JOB (2003). [Wink]
