I'm not going to give anything away and I'm not going to give my review until it gets a little closer to release. All I will say is look out when this opens, were all going to be busy. This is going to bring them in in droves.

The "5 out of 5" is a good clue as to how U liked it.
Great. I hope it lives up to your review and the usual Hollywood hype.

I'm supposed to be getting an advance print for a private screening later this month. The sound techs will be in to fine tune the system beforehand and they're even closing down the auditorium next door the night of the party so that I can really pump-up the volume.

Our print did not have a DTS track on it; but the print of Baby Mamma I had on Monday did, but it didn't have any credits. Just black film.

This is a quality addition to the comic book genera, I would say its in the top 3 thats been made in the modern era. Also for the trailer that will be on it as well, people will come for the trailer and stay for a great film.

Iron Man looks like it could make decent money for three weeks -provided if the movie is truly good. The two trailers I've seen make the show seem promising. But if you're running a single screen theater and have to keep it for 3 weeks you're obviously going to miss Speed Racer and the Narnia sequel.

Like 21, IRON MAN has the benefit of being released in a virtual vacuum. It will be but a memory by June 1. Let's hope it's more a ROBOCOP than a ROBOCOP II.

This thread purportedly "reviewing" IRON MAN certainly doesn't review it very much but I imagine it does create some word-of-mouth. That's the job of marketing.

We're going to miss Narnia either way, because it's too close to Indiana Jones (which takes priority). We might play Speed Racer if they will agree to a 13-day deal. We'll play Narnia right after Indy.

Jim, I plan on editing my Review when it gets closer to the release. I ended up seeing it twice in the span of about 10 hours and I have to say it was just as good the second time as it was the first.

Mike-
I think if you wait on this one till the start of June when it slows down for a couple weeks you will do really well with it.

Brad, I have to agree with you. Paramount (and studios in general) display very little faith in the long term success of their movies, it is appalling. Paramount recently stopped booking films at my theater because of our $7 adult evening ticket price! After moving up to $7.50, they seem satisfied, and we are once again showing their crappy movies and expect to book two prints of Indy. We have not been able to book a Sony movie in almost a year.

Attended a digitally projected exhibitor's screening at the Ziegfeld yesterday morning, and I must say that the film knocked me out. This movie practically screams summer blockbuster, and if it were not for INDY being released on it's heels, I think this one could run big for six weeks or so. If the advertising is handled properly, this ought to haul the fanboys through the doors in droves.

In short, I loved it!

Are you using a booker?

If so, I'd find another one. If you aren't I'd consider hiring one. Good bookers have developed a repoire with the studious and are able to negotiate better deals on the exhibitor's behalf.

Yes, the theater chain I work for uses a corporate booker who books for the roughly 300 screens at 32 or so locations in Michigan, Illinois, Missouri, and I believe Indiana. If she doesn't know how to throw that weight around to get titles for our highly profitable theater, then there is not a whole lot we can do at the theater level. I believe the last Sony we had was Spiderman 3, although I may be mistaken.

5 out of 5??? Interesting the pre-reviews are so high, because this movie looks totally stupid.

EDIT - I looked online to see if there was a new trailer that maybe made the film look somewhat interesting and the last several seconds of the trailer turned me off even more with that retarded stinger shot. As if the customers are suddenly going to "ooooooh" and "oh wow" at that.

Maybe I'm just a dork, but I know what I like and this film I like. The customers are going to like it to...mark my words

Iron Man is currently scoring a surprisingly impressive 95% mark at Rotten Tomatoes. And that's after 101 critics have weighed in with their opinions (96 Fresh vs. 5 Rotten). That's enough for the flick to be judged "Certified Fresh."

The review summary at imdb.com is mostly positive, and the Orlando Sentinel said it is "Everything a summer movie should be."

It was good until the last 2 reels. At that point it just became silly how overnight the suit turned into this magnificently designed thing. I kept waiting to hear "go go Gadget go". Had they toned the last bit down a bit, it would have got a much better rating from me. I am all for turning off my brain and just enjoying a movie, but this was a bit too much.

Still, 3 out of 5.

I would give this a 3.8 out of 5. Simply because i was never too much of an iron man fan (had maybe 2-3 of his comics) and i dont really know his true origin. Iron Man was good action, good effects, good acting, and a decent story line, as far as the suit being made overnight...well its a 2 hour 15 odd min movie, so what can you do? while i was watching the screening, i wanted to scream out the Stan lee cameo when i saw him, nobody else seemed to know it was him.They did set up some cool stuff for the sequel. but all in all. i give it a thumb and a half up. best movie of 2008 i have seen so far. edit : one thing that suked, is the hulk trailer was not attached, and we do not have the dts trailer disc yet, so it sounded like crap. oh also i took my girlfriend to see it ( and she HATES all the movies i like) but she actually thought it was pretty good. i think robert downey did an excellent job.as did the other actors. hopefully marvel will realize that acting can make or break a movie. ( Kirsten Dunst = Me want to melt my own face off) and get quality actors for all their movies. SPOILER ALERT: War machine is not in this movie, but you can bet he is in the sequel

Regal 15 in Eugene, #15 in NEC 2K DLP. Looked good, sounded great. Robert Downey Jr? Get out! A textbook example of a very well-made Grade A summer blockbuster. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will probably see it again.

4.5 out of 5 from me.

This is one of the better Marvel movies. It's nearly impossible to make an origin story compelling, because the structure needs to be so lopsided. But like BATMAN BEGINS, IRON MAN succeeds at making it relevant.

Robert Downey, Jr. is one of the best actors in the world, and his sense of humor is a big reason why the movie works. Matthew Libatique's photography was beautiful.

Also, aside from WILD THINGS, this may have the best credit cookie in movie history.

Now that everyone's getting to see it and the reviews are coming in. They are not to far off what I stated at the start of this thread. Marvel knows what they are doing, remember all Marvel films prior to this were not produced by them and they really didn't have much of a say in the casting, the writing, anything really about the movie.

Now they have all say in the movies, from what the story is to whos in it. RDJ is the best person they could of ever gotten for this movie, he carries the seriousness and the comedy so well that it transitions from to the other with out any problems. Jeff Bridges is great in the limited role he has, as well as everyone else. I have to agree with Mike about the end of the credits, the two times I saw this that was not on the print. Bravo to Favreau for keeping that out of all the press/advance/premiere showings.

This movie is going to be HUGE, we sold out every show after 3 on a friday and we have it on 4 screens. The summer is here and it couldn't of come with a better movie.

once again I give it a 5/5 GO SEE IT PEOPLE!!

IN THE LOBBY: There's a bunch of guys dressed up as...I don't know...medieval Scotsman? It sort of looks like a mini Ren Fest. They're just hanging around. I don't even ask.

THE PLOT: An advanced weapon specialist is abducted. Wackiness ensues.

Apparently according to several people in this thread, elsewhere on the Internet, and in the kitchen at Del Taco, this is the greatest superhero movie in the history of the world. Maybe I'm getting jaded on superhero movies, but it just didn't do much for me.

It was good, worth a watching, and Downey does a great job of educating us all on why chicks dig assholes, but the more the action ramped up towards the big fight, the more it was just getting cliche. I wouldn't put it above either of the first two Spider-Man or X-Men movies, nor either Fantastic 4 movie, nor even the last Hulk movie (which I actually liked).

It was better than Electra. There. You can put that on the DVD box art.

I agree with Sam. The movie is good but it doesn't seem to be more than a slightly above average comic book flick. Why this thing has so much hype is beyond me. The review in my local paper was gushing on Robert Downey Jr's acting so much that you'd think they wanted him nominated for an Academy Award™ for Best Actor EVER. He was decent, not bad and did the role well, but plenty of people could have pulled off that role even better. Not that there was really too much to the role to begin with. Jeff Bridges freaked me out because he looked like... well... ummmm.... it's impossible (literally) to say his name here but you get the idea... hopefully. Anyway the movie was, overall, a tad bit better than Ghost Rider. Perhaps all of the reviewers were paid to write up such amazingly good reviews.

And I just knew that the Iron Man song was going to be in the credits. You couldn't see that coming from light years away or anything. I remember when I was 6 and actually used to like that song.

I have spoken. And so it is written. And so it is.

I would argue that this film is essentially a comedy. What's astounding about Downey's performance in this movie is his naturalistic delivery, which is very funny.

I think I smirked once in this movie. I can't even remember what part it was. There was nothing special about the acting in any regard. It was just a comic book movie that is worth viewing once or twice. Batman Begins was better. So was Batman (the Tim Burton one).

Oh, yes. Those who hang around seem to think it was worth the wait. I wasn't being critical as much as I was almost admiring their patience for sitting through a credit roll that lists more names than some small-town phone books!

Hey. I like it, its a kick ass movie. I am not a fan of Downey, but he did a great job. I work in a 6 screen multiplex and we have it on two screens and its selling very good. As we speak , its showing in both and we have 400+ patrons between the two theaters, on an early afternoon showing.

I give it 4.5 out of 5

I'd give the film 4 out of 5, but only because I thought it was too long. Seriously, they could shave half an hour off it without losing anything important! Other than that, great film - I actually thought his first 'iron man' would be it; the end of the movie but no

For once, I wasn't the only person that sat through the credits - there were at least 5 other people waiting for an extra scene; perhaps they read about it on the Internet?

Saw it again, still liked it just as much. Stayed for the credit cookie (along with a lot of other people), was probably worth the wait for the fanboys. Unfortunately we all also got to see the blue MPAA rating tag spliced out of frame and the film tail out sounding like it will blow a speaker if they don't fix it.

Well I was not all that excited about it , yes the DTS sound mix was one one the best I have heard for a while.
It started out ok then after the halfway mark it just bogged down and became predicable and silly and even boring. Also not a big fan of Robert Downey JNR , he over acted his part too much. The last superman , batman was far better.

The best part was probably the Indi 4 trailer

Cuba Gooding Jr had a pretty lame role, but I guess he is going to be "Warhammer" or something like that in the next movie. Warhammer also wears an Iron Man suit but it is a different color so you can tell them apart.

Checked out Iron Man this evening. I thought it was a pretty decent super hero movie. I'd like to see it again. But I don't think Iron Man ranks as the greatest super hero movie ever. It had its moments though. Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow had good on-screen chemistry. Got a few good laughs out of some of the intentionally funny action moments.

Although a good time was had, the movie didn't do enough to explain away some of the more implausible aspects.

For instance, I'll forgive the impossibly complex super computer-driven head's up display inside the metal helmets. In reality such a thing would probably take hundreds of computer scientists working years on end to build. But Tony Stark can make a finished product with that capability by himself in a short amount of time. I may have been the only person in the theater bothered at all by this detail. So I'll stop being an asshole about it.

If you fall from a great height just dressed in street clothes you'll probably die. So what kind of "cushion" against death do you get when speeding down at the earth dressed in an iron suit weighing hundreds of pounds? Wouldn't astro physics dictate that after the crash the destroyed iron suit would be filled with bloody human goo?

Those problems probably could have been overcome with some tweaks to the story here and there. Overall, there was enough fun moments to balance out those issues as well as some problems with the battle near the show's end.

I thought the cinematography could have been better. It just seemed to have that "yeah, it's a cropped to Super35 show" sort of feel to it. Sound was decent, but the bass was pretty boomy (could be a theater EQ thing).

Yeah, the Black Sabbath tune at the end was predictable. Still, I thought all the AutoCAD™ styled vector graphics stuff was pretty cool.

I think the clip after the credits should have been moved up, at least to when all the vector animated graphics ended. I was kind of pissed off by the time that scene finally got onto the screen. Not because the credits were too long. It's just that I had to sit through those credits listening to a group of loud teens sitting nearby who obviously missed their last few doses of Ritalin™. I guess they were just there in a nearly empty auditorium to hang out or something. As the credits were winding down I had to ask them to hold it down. Nope. So I did the "shh" thing. Nope. So I finally yelled, "hey, shut the fuck up!" That got them quiet. Not one of my prouder moments. But as I was heading out the doors others who stayed through the credits to see the same scene told me they were pretty annoyed by those teens as well.

Here's my review of the first 15 seconds...looked like Robert Downey Jr. was acting. Unfortunately I wasn't in the mood for a prison movie and - judging from the "bars" on the screen I was looking "through" - that's about what I was going to see. As soon as it was confirmed that the plentitude of scratches I'd watched through the entire trailer package was continuing into the feature I got my money back. Regal People's Plaza Stadium 17 in Delaware. I can't believe they destroyed that print so thoroughly in one day! Way to go morons!

Same price here unless the DLP show is 3D and/or Hannah Montana. The DLP version of Iron Man looked better to me than 35mm.

I saw Iron Man in 35mm on a ~60' screen at the "Cinema" in Corte Madera, CA. During several scenes, I found myself wondering if the theatre had downgraded to digital, because the image appeared low contrast-y and low-resolution-y. But since there were "cigarette burns" I assume they were still using film, and the problems were just the result of a 2k intermediate, or some perhaps some digital photography.

Other than that, the image was bright, sharp, steady, and scratch-free.

I was disappointed by the movie. Maybe my hopes were too high after all of the positive reviews, but I thought it was way too by-the-numbers. I enjoyed the ride ok, but I never really cared.

(Still excited for The Dark Knight and Wall*e. On the fence about Indy...)

Here as well, digital is the same price as 35mm unless it's one of the special 3D movies.

Mark your calendars: According to IME, Marvel says Iron Man 2 is scheduled for April 30, 2010. Summer officially gets moved up another week.

Mike, I'm not worried. By then, I'll have been replaced by a computer. Plus, most colleges are out right around there, so maybe it already was summer and the studios just didn't know it.

We are playing this now. I enjoyed it a lot, and my wife really liked it too, which surprised me -- but then she likes a good action comedy.

I was impressed by Downey Jr.'s handling of the role. I don't know his work much, but I thought he was good in this.

I agree with Bobby H.'s point a couple of pages ago about how it would be totally impossible to come up with such a "suit" in a few hours/days of work, but that's the kind of thing you have to allow for in a superhero movie. Kind of like believing Lex Luthor would have a huge underground laBORatory with nobody knowing about it.

I was wondering where he keeps the giant fuel tanks that would be necessary for all that flight-- that was the big "tech" thing that kept bugging me.

The ending cookie has been a strange experience here -- some shows, whole groups of people stay for it; other times, nobody has stayed.

Overall I would give it four out of 5 stars. I thought the sound was excellent too.
