Pure disaster porn.
Tsunamis, volcanoes, huge earthquakes etc. Didn't care for any of the characters but it wasn't that hard to figure out who was going to be killed off.
Special effects team did a really good job but the film is WAY too long at over 2 1/2 hours. 2012 could have been a tighter two hours as it was starting to lag a bit during the "Titanic" segment of the movie.
My favourite disaster movie so far still remains Deep Impact, which at least let you care for the characters.
And Roland Emmerich really has it in for the White House!
I give this 3/5.

Bound to win lots of awards for all the wrong things...such as:

Worst Russian accent. (Several awards).

Worst directing of an actor in front of a blue screen.

Worst acting in front of a blue screen.

Silliest flight of a small plane through impending disasters.

Most far-fetched 'THE GEARS ARE JAMMED! WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE UNLESS WE CAN UN-JAM THEM' scene.

Just watched this and all of Johns comments are correct.

Good disaster flick but a lot of it was just plain crap. Especially a lot of the aviation based stuff.

I saw the movie testing a new DTS XD20 unit which was replacing a DTS6D unit. Well I have to admit that this was by far one of the best disaster movies I saw. It was not long enough even though it was about 3 hours, the cgi scenes were all amazing except some water coming blue screen issues which really stood out. The sound effects were terrific, and the plot was a great mix of drama, action, fun, and a lot of single liners. Engine.... Start!!!
Great show flick. Have to see it

I have to concur with Demitris. Sure, it's got its problems (like the already mentioned Russian accents) but I enjoyed this movie.

One of the things I had learned about seeing films like 2012 is to just hang lose by checking your brains at the door and just enjoy the show. If one of the character speaks with a lousy Russian accent, so what? Almost everyone I know who have seen 2012 had enjoyed it very much and I have a feeling I will too when I get my free ticket from a Blu-Ray promotion.

Although there were a few Roland Emmerich films I did not enjoy such as THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW & 10,000 BC I did enjoy INDEPENDENCE DAY and GODZILLA, a movie almost everyone hated. If fact, I just bought the movie on Blu-Ray last Tuesday and that is how I got a free ticket to 2012. GODZILLA was excellent on BD with a fantastic picture and sound.

My favourite movie from Roland Emmerich is Patriot and I consider that movie one of my top 5 favourites.

I have a Pioneer 50'' 1080p 24f Plasma and Pioneer Blue Ray player. Currently only have Bram Stockers Dracula on Blue Ray

I did not get the DRACULA Blu Ray yet but I will add it to my collection very soon because I can get it for practically nothing. THE PATRIOT cost more but it is worth having especially since you like the movie. As I had mentioned in my previous post, GODZILLA is also woth having if you also like the movie. There was a very interesting article I had read not too long ago that had stated that Roland Emmerich had additional work done to the film that he was not able to do when it was first released to theatres

That made me laugh too.

I just saw it with my wife last night, and I have to agree with just about everything that was said above. I thought it was great fun... which is one of the most important qualities I look for in movies these days. Claude is right - check your brain at the door, sit back and enjoy. I agree on the "Engine Start" line - that was great!

By the way, attached to it was the latest Avatar trailer - - - eh. I dunno. I'll probably see it anyway, but I don't know if it'll be as fun as this one was. Looks like it may be taking itself too seriously. I guess we'll see.

I liked this movie. It delivered what it advertised. Good thing Africa is the continent that survived. Don't know what the world would do with Somali pirates!

Today at Regal 15 in Eugene, #5, 35mm. Looked fine, sounded ok but not loud enough for me but hey.

Highly entertaining, special effects were of a quality that seemed to work well thoughout. Typical of disaster movies, all the people stories are mostly just a framework to hold things together.

One of the oddest prominent product placements in a movie ever: Big Kids Pull-Ups.

And we know everything is going to be ok at the end despite the catastrophe the little girl has been through including the gruesome death of her stepfather whom she apparently loved. "Hey, it's a sunny day and we're all still alive and I don't need my Pull-Ups any more!" I'm paraphrasing but that's the gist of the final scene. It would have been a better ending if John Cusack had replied "Yeah, but after what I've been through I think I might be needing some Depends sooner than I was planning."
