Wow, there's so much about Abraham Lincoln I didn't know! Who would have thought that aside from being one of Americas most notable presidents he was also a slayer of the undead? And who could have known that seven score and ten years after the events depicted in this biopic, the rapid rise in popularity of vampire culture would further buoy his already legendary popularity. And how ironic that it would be a Russian director to do so. Seriously, though, the ideas presented here are so outlandish and ridiculous that I doubt they're even true.

Director, Timur Bekmambetov's films have traditionally been synonymous with spectacularly choreographed, ball-tearing innovative action sequences and fantasy tales with convoluted sub-surface back stories that are curiously shallow in their implementation. Whether it be clandestine demon wars or secret cabals of weaver assassins, it almost seems that there's more going on beneath the surface of Bekmambetov's movies than even he seems conscious of. He rarely elaborates on the finer details of his stories, we just have to take his guff for granted and roll with it.

Nobody will accuse Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter of possessing a convoluted back story, however, which leaves just the ball-tearing action and a movie which is shallow even by Bekmambetov's standards. The action is enough, however, to sustain the film throughout its running time, you'll just struggle to remember it the following day.

I didn't have any idea what to expect when we chose to see this one, but accepting that this was pure fiction (or was it?) we enjoyed it for it's unusual storyline and fast pace. I'd recommend it to any adventureous soul. The only disappointing thing was the impression that most southerners (slaveowners) were vampires was pretty narrowminded... why no mention of us werewolves and shapeshifters? Just jesting... it was good entertainment, but just that... entertainment. They're probably saving the werewolves and shapeshifters for the sequel. The Twilight wolf pack should be available...
