CINEMA: Regal Village Square, Las Vegas, NV
AUDITORIUM: 10
PRESENTATION: Sony Digital 4K (but probably 2K)
PRESENTATION PROBLEMS: Fuzzy picture
RATING: Three stars (out of four)

THE PLOT: A rich housewife is suddenly broke and single. Wackiness ensues.

Sold as a fish-out-of-water rich girl type deal, there's kind of a serious focus here on mental illness. I'm not sure everyone who sees this will pick up on that. But it's sort of amazing in that regard.

While not on the level of "Young Adult", I found myself making comparisons.

Presentation was great

With Woody Allen, you either get a comedy with moments of pathos, or you get a Bergmanian drama with moments of hilarity. With a cast that includes Alec Baldwin, Louis C.K. and Andrew Dice Clay, of course it's going to be the latter. Cate Blanchett plays a New York City socialite who loses everything when her millionaire husband is exposed as a Madoff-like huckster, who is forced to move in with her divorced sister in San Francisco.

The story doesn't work as well as most of Allen's movie, as if he had two competing ideas for movies that didn't get fully fleshed out, so he crammed them together and hoped the stellar cast would distract you from its shortcomings. Some great actors like Michael Stuhlbarg and Peter Sarsgaard are completely wasted in small roles, while others like Max Casella (Doogie Houser's best friend Vinny), Bobby Cannavale, Sally Hawkins and especially Andrew Dice Clay shine with what little they're given.

Overall, I'd give it a 6/10.

Warning, slight "spoilers"...

Movies that don't give you enough food for thought shouldn't have an open ending... booooo!

this movie was mono, right? (as most Woody Allen films are) or was it in stereo, cause at one point the soundmix sounded like it was wider and was at least two-channel.

as for the movie, great cast and acting... but man oh man, what a depressing movie - not a feel good movie by a long shot.

couldn't buy Peter Sarsgaard's character wasn't gay.
