THE PLOT: Greed and debauchery. Wackiness ensues.
If you see "American Hustle" before you see this, you'll probably make comparisons initially. But about ten minutes in, you should forget "American Hustle" completely. This is classic Scorsese all the way, and it's just freaking great. If anything, you'll start thinking about "Casino".

This one clocks in at exactly 3 hours, which is 19 minutes longer than The Hobbit 2. It's a rather good sign that this movie felt a whole deal shorter than that Hobbit movie and any comparison between those movies ends right there .
Based on true events, that revolve around a pink sheets broker called Jordan Belfort, which seemingly transpired across the globe somewhere in the late 80's and early 90's, Scorsese's black comedy doesn't bore you one single second... this is one heck of a ride.
The movie got slammed by some critics, because of the tons of over-the-top profanity, sex, drugs, you name it. If you're easily offended and are unable or unwilling to recognize the satire, this movie is not your cup of tea.
The real Jordan Belfort has a short cameo at the end of the movie.
Additionally, many of the over-the-top events in this movie, like the sinking of the yacht in stormy weather are actually based on factual events...

while the 3 hours seemed to fly by quite well, I thought some of the scenes felt redundant and unnecessary. Very good, but not as great as the trailers led you to believe. Was sort of shocked over the amount of nudity and sex was in this, you could see why the MPAA got all bothered and enacted a NC-17 rating (until some of it was toned down).

I actually thought this was Scorsese Lite and American Hustle far better. Both movies have flawed characters, except in this movie, every SINGLE character except for the FBI agent is despicable scum, and most of them are too one note to have a 3 hour movie about. Boiler Room had some of the same stuff and done in a much more low key and almost just as effective way.
This is not half the movie Goodfellas was. The only common thing in both movies is the lead characters are mostly scumbags. This lead character makes the Henry Hill character seem like choirboy by comparison. And one of the sad things aobut the movie was the listenable but not carefully selected music score. It seems like songs were picked just because they had a good beat and didn't really add to a scene in some instances.
I loved the first half of the movie. But the second half just does not deliver enough of a story arc to justify a 3 hour time. The sex and drug scenes were so repetitive that I thought I was watching the sequel to Fear and Loathing in Vegas. THough, I gotta admit the country club scene was hilarious and well done.
I don't need to like the characters to enjoy a movie, but damn, you gotta make them more interesting. A douchebag like the lead character whoever this guy was like in real life is just not that interesting.
So, overall a sort of fun watchable movie, but forgettable. It does a good job of showing the excesses of the scum who work in Wall Street and the excesses seem recreated in a realistic fashion. So the movie gets credit for that. Some of the scenes are like well shot bankers version of Cocksucker BLues.
For me, certainly not Scorsese's best.
Presentation: Regal Perimeter Point in one of their smallest screens already(screens 3 and 6 -both tiny). But in two theaters. Bad move by the multiplex. Why not show one of the showings in a slightly bigger screen especially with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio.

Finally got around to watching this movie today in my home theater. The movie was pretty good and the three hour running time went by pretty fast.
Not sure if the movie was one of the best films from last year, there were a lot of gloss to the movie and very little back story of some of the victims and such.
I find it interesting that Leo is a mega-super rich movie actor who is playing a sort of mega rich dude, so I am not sure if was all that difficult to get into the roll.
