Loosely inspired on the short story by Oscar Wilde of the same name, this movie is one of the darkest I've seen in a while.

Arbor and Swifty are two teenage boys, growing up in the darker neighborhoods of Bradford (North England). After being expelled from school, they start to work for a seedy scrap-metal dealer called Kitten (the Selfish Giant in this story).

Together they start to collect scrap for a little money, but after they start stealing from various sources, the situation starts to go downhill rather quickly...

So, whenever you're in the mood of some unvarnished realism, this movie may be worth taking a look at. Obviously, those kind of movies draw another kind of public than your average blockbuster, but it was nonetheless noteworthy that the entire theater (a room that fits about 250 people with about 200 in them) was silent for a few minutes after the credits rolled. Nobody even dared to leave his seat for the first two or so minutes, a very eery situation. The only time I remember something similar was after a special screening of United 93 (2006).
