This is an exciting, funny, satirical and deeply political movie, and whoever the strict Marxists are will have a great time, at least until the last twenty minutes or so. The hero is Curtis, who lives at the back of the train with the impoverished. He wants to get past the rich folk at the front so that he can confront the despotic Wilford, who lives at the head of the train and keeps its engine running, the plan being to take over and make things a little more equal among the passengers. He is helped by Namgoong, the drug addicted engineer who designed the security systems, and his equally stoned daughter Yona. It’s not really a spoiler to say that they do make their way forward through the opulent cars where the well off live, and into the engine compartment. What happens then? Not gonna say, but the moviegoers who had been cheering for the rebels got really quiet for awhile, and the ending of the film will cause some debate about whether or not it is really a good idea to buck a working system, even one that is a brutal as this one is. Look for Tilda Swinton as the train’s mad commandant, and Allison Pill as a crazed school teacher, both great performances. Snowpiercer may not end to everyone’s satisfaction, and you'll be forced to ask yourself whether the film's final shot really represents a triumph. It's still a great ride of a movie.
