The CEO of a tech company invites a top employee to his secluded estate and asks him to help determine whether his latest model of female robot qualifies as a true “artificial intelligence”. The robot, however, may have an agenda of her own. At the AMC Lincoln Square Cinemas, New York City, and in limited release.

*****

Ava the robot is very pretty and demure, and seems eager to please Caleb, the top coder who interviews her with an eye towards establishing how intelligent she actually is. But if really intelligent people are capable of really intelligent mind games, is a real artificial intelligence capable of the same thing? What kind of experiment is her reclusive billionaire inventor really running? And who is that other strange, mute woman hovering in the background?

This is a well done and really well acted movie that asks a lot of existential questions and pays them off. The robot is a clever actress/CGI effect and the photography and sound design are excellent. The filmmakers didn’t quite stick the ending though, and if you were paying attention you may be left with a “So what happens when . . . “ moment at the very end. It’s still worth a ticket. Recommended.
