RATING: Two and one half stars (out of four)

THE PLOT: An inventor seeks funding but forgot to invent Kickstarter first. Wackiness ensues.

The movie starts out looking like a hybrid of Bram Stoker's Dracula and the elegant bits of Enchanted. It feels like it's going to be an impressive standout in every way right up until we move to the old decaying house in the middle of nowhere, but then the script decays accordingly. There's one more impressive scene that starts out reminding you of the final battle scene between Uma Thurman and Lucy Liu in "Kill Bill", but that's about it.

As usual from Guillermo del Toro, it's visually impressive. Trouble is, the substance ultimately doesn't quite match.

^ I agree - technically it's an impressive movie, production design and sound design are top notch. But the script was pretty mundane and didn't really amount to much, nor was it particularly scary.

I could sworn I saw a trailer for this in 3D. A 3D conversion could have saved this, not to mention a full blown Atmos mix, Universal is a bit chintzy on what get's the 3D/object based mix treatment... oh well.
