I'm still trying to decide exactly what I thought of this movie. It is exactly what the title says. It is a Jane Austin period piece centered around a zombie apocalypse. It's set in 19th century England and has all the typical dialog, costumes, and sets you would expect from such a movie. However, all of the citizens live with the reality there are zombies around, and they must be prepared to fight.

I watched this movie expecting it to be kind of an absurd take on the meshing of such opposing concepts, but the movie plays it very serious. The characters are not winking at the camera as they say their lines. I didn't dislike the movie, but I think I would have enjoyed it more if they had played up the absurdity of the concept.

Based on a book, believe it or not.

Haven't read the book, but I remember listening to Wisconsin Public Radio a few years back when the book came out. One of the morning programs had a guest host and the person he was interviewing was the author of the newly released book. It was pretty clear the guest host hadn't chosen the topic of the program. It was a hilariously awkward interview; much as you describe the movie, the author was very serious in his discussion of the book, no tongue in check at all. The poor guest host seemed so lost, he had no idea how to conduct the interview.

The sets, costumes and music in this movie are marvellous! The romance angle is good, and the zombies are also well done.

The whole is, unfortunately, not as good as the sum of the parts. But it's a fun movie that's worth seeing anyway.

I'd call it about a 3 out of 5. Zombie fans might rate it higher than that.

I agree that it might have been a better movie if it hadn't been played quite so seriously.

After that try the 2001 Japanese film "The Happiness of the Katakuris." Think a Japanese version of The Sound of Music... with zombies.
