I was intrigued to see this when I first heard about it because I thought the title sounded interesting. (I'd never heard of the classic book.) Then I saw the trailer and I thought "well, that looks...weird."

Now it's here, and weird it is. I heard two teenagers coming out of it the other night, one of them said "That was MESSED UP." I don't know if that's a compliment or not.

I have to confess I haven't sat and watched this whole thing, but I've glanced at it a few times and it does indeed come off as pretty messed up. The visuals are pretty amazing eye candy, but dialogue-wise, the whole thing seems like one of those touchy-feely, ultra-"diverse," fuzzy-wuzzy, "you can change the world," "we are all one" kind of preachy movies with lots of hugging and horrible costumes in it. So I lost all desire to actually watch it.

Oprah has her fingers all over this one, in fact I swear I heard her little catchphrase "Live Your Best Life" in the lyrics to the ending song, which is one of those R&B Auto-Tuned jams that the kids like nowadays.

I dunno. I miss when Disney movies weren't trying to preach at you and were just about having a good time at the movies.

No star rating assigned because I didn't watch the whole show.

I haven't read the book in eons, but Disney's interpretation of the classic book is one really bonkers adaptation. Visually it's quite a marvel, but the script, characters and plot progression seems like it was improvising on the spot. I bought the 4K UHD just to hear the commentary track and hear what director Ava DuVernay has to defend, er explain, certain decisions she made in making this movie.
