It is SO dead here today. You know what they're playing in the Grand? The freaking Lord of the Rings trilogy.

THE PLOT: An average guy isn't. Wackiness ensues.

Rachel Chu (gesundheit) is a professor at NYU dating Nick, a guy with a past not so filled in. He takes her home to Singapore to meet the family while attending a wedding as best man. The first suspicion she gets that not is all as it seems is when they board the plane are escorted to a first class suite. Turns out Nick is from one of the richest families in Asia, and is damn near royalty.

The movie oozes decadence from every pore, from the visuals to the music to the food...oh, the food. The plot largely revolves around Nick's mother's disapproval of Rachel and the fierce jealousy and "you're not good enough" attitude of the women who want to take her place, all of which kind of blindsides her and she's ill-equipped to handle.

Still, this is a rom-com at heart and there's lots of genuinely funny moments and quirky characters too. There's also lots of topless men. if you like really skinny but well sculpted and shaved topless men, there's a lot of eye candy here. One of said scenes was with Nick and his mother and felt damn creepy.

Enjoyed this film very much. The editing and titles/fonts used looked colorful. Viewed on the huge flat scope screen today Sat Sept 1 2018 at 4 40 PM at the historic large #1 screen at the deco Alameda Theatre in Alameda CA. So nice to see so many older and young people in the seats, they enjoyed the movie. This is a word of mouth movie. Many people are telling their friends to go see It. Some people have seen it 3 or 4 times in the last few weeks. It is not just for Asians to go see but anyone that likes a well done movie with love and humor and a mean rich possessive mother. Nice to watch a film with not much violence or bad language. The only guns shown were the security guards and the rich moms house outside. It has moved into some of the big theatres in the SF Bay Area when they started to sell out the small auditoriums. Go check It out and tell your movie friends. Hope they do a sequel. Thanks to Warner Bros for this fine family film and Dan & Kyle the management team at the Alameda Theatre for booking this fun film in their large theatre venue.
