At my theatre, we sell Coke products. Coke, Diet Coke, Mr. Pibb, and Sprite. We also sell Fruitopia, and Dansani bottled water. Anybody sell any different kinds of Coke products? How about those that sell Pepsi products? What do you have?

At my theatre we also have coke products, we have coke, dt. coke, sprite, surge, pink lemmonade, fruitopia, naya bottled water, Icee, and Barq's rootbeer, but only in a 20oz bottle.

The thing that I find strangest. and I was talking to a couple people at work about this, is the fact that we have no less then 8 signs, 5 soda towers, and a cooler, that say coke on them, plus the large drinks come in a 64oz coke mug, yet at least 60-70% of people come up and ask for a pepsi, it baffles me, well over half the people, those are the same people who ask if tax is included when at the bottom uf the sign it says tax not included

Same thing here. We have Pepsi, big sign (lighted!) on top of the pop machine in the dead center of the snack bar, people still ask for a "Large Coke." Hell, I do it myself sometimes.

We sell Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Sunkist Orange, Dr. Pepper, 7-Up, Mountain Dew, Lipton ice tea, Lemonade, and spring water (bottled). Pepsi is by far the biggest seller, 2nd place probably a tie with Mtn Dew and Diet Pepsi. Worst is the Lipton tea; of the soda pops, the worst seller is the Sunkist Orange.

Pepsi...UGH. I don't like to patronize theaters that have Pepsi products. Even though I never pay for a movie ticket, knowing where the theater really makes it's money I will ALWAYS drop a few bucks on the concession stand as a thanks for the pass. I'll drink Pepsi, but it just isn't the same. I hear Pepsi will give the theater one heck of a deal if they only sell their products and NOT Coke. I have a feeling this is true, as virtually every independent or small theater chain I've ever been to has ripped out their Coke towers and replaced them with that Pepsi crap. With the prices of drinks at the concession stand, I expect real Coke or at least a choice.

Is there a theater anywhere out there that has both products? I'd like to see their numbers for comparison.

Coke.....UGH! We only sell Pepsi produvts around here. Pepsi gives us top notch service. Alot of theaters here tried Coke, but Coke gave very bad service to the theaters AND WOULD NOT DO ANY REPAIRS ON HOLIDAYS! Pepsi comes right out no matter what day it is, holiday or not. There have been a few times where a fountain head or carbonator would go out on a busy holiday and Pepsi would bust their ass to get it back in service again. Coke would always say, "we can't get to you till Monday".
Needless to say that because of their outstanding service I always recommend Pepsi.

We used to dispense Coke at my old company -- until one day Pepsi came in and offered us CASH to switch to Pepsi.

Here's how it works -- to the best of my knowledge.

COKE offers advertising support. IE. if I want to print combo coupons that drive a particular Coke product such as Mr. Pibb -- then Coke will pay to have those coupons made. If I want a policy trailer made that has Coke predominantly displayed -- Coke will foot part of the bill.

PEPSI doesn't offer advertising support. What they do instead is offer you a yearly advertising fund based on the number of gallons you sell at each location. What you do with this money is up to you. If you feel you need to advertise that you have Pepsi - you can spend it on signage and promotions or whatever. However -- since most theatres ONLY SELL ONE BRAND -- you really don't need to advertise. So most people spend this money on their snack bar sign etc. when they first open a theatre.

It makes sense to me -- the people at Coke were SOO geared toward locations where people had a choice of Coke vs. Pepsi. I repeatedly told them "I don't care to do a promotion. The people are going to drink ONE of the Coke products... and I don't really care which one!!!"

And that's that.

I have never seen ANY facility that served fountain drinks offer both Coke and Pepsi.

We serve Pepsi products. My only complaint is that the order center employees are so happy and polite on the phone that I want to gag!

...No, really, I feel fine....... Yes ma'am, I'll be sure to have a Pepsi day.....

I wish they would just say "What do you want?", let me tell them, have them read it back to me, and then hang up on me!!

I order on Mondays! I'm in no mood to be giddy.

Ken,

Just as the service at McDonald's will vary from one state/town/location to another, the service on Coke will too. I've had a really bad Coke service company, but then again, I've had a fantastic Coke service company too. It all just depends.

And yes, I have had Coke come out on a holiday.

Ok I love Free Stuff, I love sugar, and I LOVE Caffiene. At Hollywood Hits "Discount" Theatres I get all 3! We proudly serve QUALITY Pepsi Products. Including Pepsi,Diet Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Sierra Mist (Slice), and Dr. Pepper. That quite well covers the Sugar and Caffeine for me but what about the free stuff? you ask. Well, Pepsi comes around every month or two and spends a weekend at the theatre with the Pepsi Prowler (which ive ridden in) Complete with a DJ and tons of free stuff! (Looks at his Diet Pepsi Boxers ) Plus I Took the pepsi challenge and I prefer PEPSI!

We have so much Pepsi Signage and people still ask for a coke if they do I say NO.

Pepsi also has wicked cool soda towers!

The brand new (about 2 months old) Pepsi towers at one place I know of are evil. They will start pouring a drink intermittently several seconds after the cup is full and the concessionist has turned his back to it. THAT's their secret to success...you must buy more Pepsi BIBs when you use their machines!

(I love taking the Pepsi challenge. I always pick Coke and the people behind the table look at me in anger like I've just murdered someone.)

well ours dont do that. we have the kind where when the liquid comes into contact with armthingy it stops it. no holding, no buttons its great I love them. the only thing is iits kinda hard to get the heads totally clean. we use either sodawater and baking soda, or HOT water and baking soda to soak them in.

I bought and restored a theatre in Wisconsin in an area I was unfamiliar. When it came close to opening, I talked with many of the local bars, restaurants, etc. and I found that Pepsi had a lock in the area, no one sold coke products. The reason given was poor service. I called Pepsi and they wouldn't hardly give me the time of day, very unresponsive. I called Coke and they fell all over themselves to give me service. Needless to say, I have all Coke products at my Drive In and I've been very happy with the service. I mentioned Coke's rep to my sales contact and she said they reorganized and changed focus. I mentioned my switch to the bar owner near my theatre (he was complaining of Pepsi's deteriorating service) and now he serves Coke product too. Isn't competition wonderful.

I hear there's one area in Oregon where NEITHER Coke or Pepsi are available. They only have Royal Crown (RC) Cola!

Personally, I prefer Coke. I worked in a theatre that switched from Pepsi to Coke. Sales didn't change, but the Coke supplier was easier to deal with than the Pepsi one and charged less. We never got any cool free stuff from either, but we probably weren't big enough for that sort of thing anyway. It was always fun when the CO2 cylinder ran out right in the middle of a big "rush" time and the concession people couldn't figure out how to change it and had to have me (the projectionist) do it. (Not that doing this bothered me, but it seemed to be a fairly trivial thing to do...)

Hmm... we don't have Coke products, yet we do have a fair bit of beverage variety...
Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, Orange Slice, Mountain Dew, Lipton Iced Tea, Mug Root Beer, Hawaiian Punch (fruit punch), Pink Lemonade, and 7UP. Besides that we have Blue Raspberry Icees & Mountain Dew Icees, Poland Spring bottled water, and Green Mountain Coffee (regular & decaf).
That's more for options than our nearest competitors can offer!

We opened the Rialto in January 2000. It had been a Pepsi house. I feel pretty stongly about the whole Coke vs Pepsi thing. I dislike Pepsi as a fountain drink. I called the Coke company to come out and change the service. They were helpful. They didn't charge us for the towers. They hauled away the old, rotting Pepsi towers.

We did have trouble convincing them of the type of soda heads we wanted. We wanted sensor rods and they didn't support that head. It took them three tries to get it right. But we knew what we wanted and we got it.

We have all the syrups for the fancy coffees. So you can have cherry coke, chocolate coke and vanilla coke as well as Italian sodas.

Oh, BTW, the Pepsi Lipton Iced Tea stuff is really gross. The Coke version of same (Nestea, I think) is much better. I'm not much of an iced tea fan, but the contrast between these products was quite marked.

Here in Newberg, Oregon at the 99W Drive-in and Cameo theatre we have served Coke products since the 50's, and it's considered a Pepsi town here. We have advertising sent to us by coke ever since the fifties still up, including large old lit reader boards, so it is very oriented toward this brand. We have Coke, Barq's Root Beer, Cherry Coke, The pink lemonade and the original minute maid lemonade, Sprite and Diet, between the two theatres not all flavors at one house. In a cooler supplied from coke we have Fruitopia, DaSanti water, and Lemon ice teas, and I snuck in Starbuck Frappuchino(which is connected to Pepsi-so don't tell) Still....., when teens come in the snack bar, the first things they ask for are Pepsi, Mountain Dew, or Dr. Pepper!!

Lately the ALIEN GLO-POPS have been a big hit!!!

The circuit I used to work for converted from Coke to Pepsi companywide. I handled two theater conversions in Oklahoma. One theater was great - the Pepsi rep must have come in 10 times before D-Day to confirm the equipment I wanted, etc. and delivered on-time and exactly what I wanted. The techs worked overtime and did the conversion and I didn't even have to close the concession stand. Much better service than Coke, who didn't even show up for their equipment for a month and a half after the conversion. I seriously thought about telling them I sold the equipment!

However, on the other side of the state, it was like pulling teeth. Later in the year, we reopened a drive-in in the second city and I had to order the Pepsi equipment through the "good-Pepsi-service" theater and pack it all in my pickup and drive it 150 miles to the other theater and install it myself.

Oh, well. You can't win them all. It just depends on your local people. Needless to say, the good-Pepsi people got movie passes for Christmas that year, and the bad-Pepsi people paid full price at the drive-in. :P

Both the Coke & Pepsi distributors in this are are completely indifferent to the fountain business. Most fountain operators buy from one of the independents who provide the equipment no charge if you buy exclusively from them. We serve generic cola which you can't tell from Coke and it costs less than half of Coke. The sign just says cola, never had a customer complain in 6 years.

We serve Pepsi, and used to serve Coke. I am completly indifferent as to Coke v. Pepsi on the taste. If you keep the water filters changed out often, keep the soda towers clean, and rotate stock you will never have a problem with the taste, only a problem if people prefer one or the other.

The one thing I do like about Pepsi over Coke is there service. The only time that we have to call them is the occasional break down. They automatically come and see how much soda we have several times a week. It is really nice to not have to worry about ordering stuff.

We just switched from Pepsi to Coke, the Coke people have been very helpful and outgoing. Everything they prommised has happened and on time too. We got new coke shirts for the employees, fridge for the water, point of sale items (alot of stuff pepsi doesnt even carry), new 6 foot menu board with rotating combo signs (very sweet)and outstanding service - they come every tuesday and thursday to make sure we have enough product also we have cell and private numbers to reach a repair man or emergency order if needed. Matter of fact as I type this, a couple of pepsi guys are hauling their old equipment out of here.

You can serve both Pepsi and Coke or at least you used to be able to. My dad ran a drive-in hamburger joint for 24 years - his own - not a chain - and we served both coke and pepsi. Many people drove through just because we were the only drive through that served Pepsi but most of our volume was coke.

For me personally, Coke - is it! It's the real thing. Don't care if Pepsi is cheaper, has better service or offers more money. I like Coke and that's what I serve.

Pepsi is what we serve at Swingfire Central. We sell all drinks that Pepsi makes and we are the only chain in Canada that sells Wild Cherry Pepsi. Pepsi is the best. Coke is too sweet and lots of customers complained to us about having Coke when we started our expansion of new themed theatres!

I had both coke and pepsi at my drive in for awhile and service for the pepsi was bad, so I just had coke. If you have problems you can call coke usa a 24 hr number and they will get in touch with your local guy to fix the machine or if they can't they will send someone. I had a guy come 180 miles to fix mine because the local repair guy was gone,

Interesting Coke/Pepsi debate!

When I first got into the biz in 1979, the theatre owned its soda machine. It was a Coke house then. The theatre came with a crappy old menu board...too small, and ugly! We called Coke and asked for a new board, they said we didn't buy enough Coke products to get one!

Now I admit we're not the biggest account in the world. At the time we were spending anywhere from $200 - $300/month on soda products and cups... but I think a menu board wasn't too much to ask.

Anyway, my business partner was a Pepsi fan, and the menu-board incident pissed him off, so we decided to try Pepsi out. We had both drinks for 3 months, but only Coke signage. Purely on word-of-mouth and the word "PEPSI" written on a piece of tape over the machine spigot, Pepsi outsold Coke by at least 3 to 1. Then Pepsi offered us a new machine, 6 months of free CO2, all the menu boards, signs, etc. we wanted, and a couple of cases of free cups. So of course, we switched. This all happened in 1980.

20 years later, we are still a Pepsi house and are now on our 4th new machine since we made the switch. We now have the sensor-rod type and it's great. They have also installed water filters (we have hard water), plus a smaller machine for a second "aux" concession stand we have, and they have never failed to help when needed. And we get all the menu boards we need.

They also spent a bundle to have a big Pepsi/7UP billboard painted on the side of the theatre (we requested it in 1980 to replace an old gas-station billboard that had been painted there.) It says "ROXY THEATRE, presenting great movies since 1930" along with the logos. This has been repainted 4 times in the last 20 years (in case you're cringing at the thought of this.... the last time it was re-done, the wall was painted a pale yellow as a first step, with the logos etc. added about 6 weeks later... we actually got inquiries from people wondering when we were going to put the Pepsi sign back up! They missed it!)

Pepsi has done all this, even though today we still spend only about $400 - $600 per month with them.

Coke has never even bothered to call asking if we'd like to switch back. Just to show we're good sports, we keep a few cans of Coke in the fridge for some regular customers who are die-hard Coke fans.

We've got all coke products in the fountains and vending machines. Our 20 oz. Dasani costs $2.00 in the machines, but at the stand, we have 1 liter bottles for $2.50. Besides the normal coke stuff, we've got Hi-Ci fruit punch and Minute Maid Lemonade, pluce Icees.

Most of the theaters I was associated with through the years tried Coke products, but for some reason or another, Coke was dumped in favor of Pepsi.

As I see now, the Pepsi people are much easier to deal with, both in prices and service.

In any event, I don't drink that crap to begin with. Since I am an old US Navy retiree, I prefer the "good old cup of coffee". But, unfortunately, most theaters don't fair too well in the coffee department. They never change the grounds, and after 30 minutes, it tastes like regurgitated owl puke. So, I make my own coffee <sigh>

One thing I loved about the carbon arc days - I could make my own pot of coffee and set it on top the "black stick" lamphouse and keep it hot. Those old carbon arc lamps made excellent cigarette lighters, too. Never needed a book of matches or lighter...

My theatre (Ronnies 20, Wehrenberg) Sells Pepsi. To the point that we don't accept Movie Cash (Or free admission stuff) from coke products.. Pepsi sent us one of the best policy trailors I have ever seen. Featuring Barbie dolls doing all the stuff people hate: "Please dont talk on Cell phones" (or something to that effect) and a big human hand comes down and attatches battery cables to both ends of the cell phone and fries the girl barbie doll and her phone. Lots of funny stuff like that. its a riot!

Oh yeah, and we sell beer. (Bud, Bud Light, and Amberbach) in 3 sizes (including pitcher)

Sorry, but I still shake my head in amazement every time I say that we sell beer.. *sigh* Makes it interesting too since most of the employees are 18 and under, so they have to have someone working back there over 21 or call a manager to pour beer. The call goes out over the walkie talkies "I need a manager in food court to pour beer" haha.. makes me laugh.. oh well.. Back to work!

Our student cinema are just deciding. We are turning a walking cupboard into a snack bar for next year. The union as a whole has a licence with Pepsi, but we have found out that we are not part of that and we can take Coke if we want too. Thus a big argument between us about weather we will sell Coke or Pepsi.

I like Coke myself. Pepsi makes me gag. I always take the pepsi challenge and make a horrible face when I taste the pepsi. The thing that bugs me is that the same theaters that sell pepsi also sell knock off concessions for everything else. Like instead of red vines they have some horrid tasting things which I think are called twizlers. It's like they took all the good original stuff and tried to duplicate it but did a bad job. We always stop at the store down the street and buy a 16oz coke and a package of red vines. Then I buy popcorn at the theater. That's one thing they haven't figured out how to screw up yet. I wonder which one was invented first, Coke or pepsi?

Pepsi pre-dated Coke, and was almost bankrupt before hitting on the idea of selling twice as much soda (12 ounces) for the same price as the six-ounce Coke (a nickel).

Pepsi's financial trouble was so dire, they were packaging the soda in recycled beer and ketchup bottles for a while!

Dave, I believe that starting next week, in your neck of the woods Regal will be selling Coke. The entire company is converting to Coke, but not all theaters are changing at the same time. I was actually going to start a thread on this topic sometime this week, because I didn't realize one had already existed. I, too, wanted to know who sells Pepsi or Coke. Most, if not all, of the theaters I know of now sell Coke since the Regal conversion.

Making that switch isn't trivial. I think the Regal tickets have the Pepsi logo. Isn't it in the roller coaster policy too? Maybe not. I'll post here when they make the change (I know everyone is on the edge of their seats over this momentous event).

The Regal in Poulsbo, Wa. just switched to Coke (Yay). I used to smuggle in coke, as I hate pepsi so much. I always said if they would sell coke there I would buy it. So now I do.
Now if they would just sell red vines instead of twizzlers.....

We already have the new Policy trailers which will go on screen tomorrow. As far as the ticket stubs, I can't believe that theater still has them! They were only used for a short time, and every theater I've been to ran out over a year ago. But I'm sure they will receive a new supply of tickets without the Pepsi logo.

Are the new policy trailers similar to the current "roller coaster" ones except with different products pictured, or is it a totally different trailer? Hopefully, Regal will not pull another "Pepsi girl" type of thing. I think Regal should remove the words "Feature Presentation" from the end of their policy trailer since there is typically an attached trailer which annoys customers. I often hear chatter in an auditorium after the words "Feature Presentation" appear, followed by another preview.

, perhaps you are thinking of the vine sarsaparilla (Smilax ornata)?

Purported properties/actions: Alterative, Aphrodisiac, Antibiotic, Anti-inflammatory, Anti-rheumatic, Antiseptic, Antipruritic, Anti-syphilic, Carminative, Depurative, Diaphoretic, Diuretic, Febrifuge, Hepatoprotective, Hormonal, Steroidal, Stimulant, Stomachic, Tonic.

The reputation varies wildly over time, perhaps because many different plants fall under the general name and may get used as sarsaparilla.

Sarsaparilla got its name from two Spanish words: "zarza" and "parilla," referring to the thorny vines of the plant. The original beverage made from it was a medicinal.

A similar plant was apparently often used in brewing homemade sarsaparilla:Wild Sarsaparilla, Aralia nudicaulis

Sarsaparilla vine should not be confused with Sassafras albidum which was once also used to flavor root beer. Sassafras, what used to be a prime ingredient in root beer and sasparilla was effectively banned in the U.S. during the 1960s as an ingredient because rats got cancer from large quantities of synthetic safrole, the active flavor.

Many people equate Sarsaparilla with root beer, which it is and isn't.

I can't recall ever seeing that happen at the local Regal (another preview after the policy trailer). If a trailer comes attached to the feature, is the theatre allowed to cut off the trailer and move it to the other side of the policy trailer, so when it says "Feature Presentation", it really is the feature? More work though.

Ken Lackner and others were right about Regal -- locally they changed from Pepsi to Coke this past week. They have new tickets (with no "sponsor" logo at all), new graphics at the concession stand, new soft drink cups, and a new version of the roller-coaster policy trailer in front of the feature. Also a new Coke-sponsored slide show.

Regal Signs Seven-Year Pact With Coca-Cola
4/10/2002 BoxOffice.Com

The Coca-Cola Company has entered into a new seven-year strategic beverage supply and marketing partnership with Regal Cinemas, Inc., the nation's largest film exhibitor. Under the terms of the multiyear beverage agreement, Coca-Cola will be the exclusive soft drink beverage supplier for Regal's more than 300 locations.

"The agreement with Regal Cinemas represents our commitment to developing relationships built on mutual success, not only from our brands, but also from our services," said Jeff Dunn, president and chief operating officer, Coca-Cola Americas. "As the exclusive supplier of soft drink and water beverages to Regal Cinemas, coupled with our existing partnerships with United Artists and Edwards Theatres, we can ensure a quality beverage program that delivers value to our movie-going customers and consumers nationwide."

The partnership with Regal also represents a unique marketing opportunity for Coca-Cola, including concession marketing and promotion opportunities as well as the showcasing of Coca-Cola Screen Play slides and the rolling stock footage that runs prior to the feature film.

"Our marketing partnership with Regal allows us to refresh and entertain millions of moviegoers each year as they are out enjoying themselves with family and friends," added Dunn.

Blasphemy!

I love Coca Cola.

I haven’t drunk a Coca Cola since February 2001. I gave it up in the misguided attempt to lose some poundage.

My first drink of choice was soda water with lime squeezed in it.

I discovered that Diet Canada Dry Ginger Ale doesn’t taste like diet soda. I have also discovered that Diet 7-Up doesn't taste like diet soda either.

While in England my girlfriend got me hooked on Diet Coke which I still think tastes foul.

Then when I was at the local competition I ordered a Diet Pepsi and I like it.

Sorry Coke. I still love you, but you don't love me.

PepsiCo spun off its restaurant operations (KFC/Taco Bell/Pizza Hut) in 1994. The new parent company is called Tricon Global Restaurants: http://www.triconglobal.com

Pizza Huts around these parts serve Coke products.

Ian sed: "While in England my girlfriend got me hooked on Diet Coke which I still think tastes foul. Then when I was at the local competition I ordered a diet Pepsi and I like it."

I agree completely! Diet Coke from cans is undrinkable. I can tolerate it out of a fountain though, tastes different/better for some reason. But Diet Pepsi is much better. My former employer supplied free soft drinks to the employees. We had a vending machine (cans) on each floor of the building set for "Free". The vending machine guy told me he had to restock the Diet Pepsi far more often than Diet Coke. But on the regular non-diet stuff, it was the opposite. Coke was preferred over Pepsi by mose people. Maybe me too.

Does the diet-type syrup used in fountain dispensers use a different sweetener than the canned version of the same beverage? I seem to recall that fountain drinks use sacharine, while cans use Nutra-Sweet. Maybe that's why the Diet Coke tastes different to me depending on where it's sourced.

I can't remember the ratio's off the top of my head. So what that means is that you spend more money selling coke, and your changing your boxes more often.

We Changed from Pepsi to Coke 1 month ago.

Why? Due to the way that the immediately previous operators handled the pepsi account (and most other accounts across the board) Pepsi was left with a bad taste in their mouth in regards to our theater, and didn't care to give us decent service.

The result: out with the old, ugly, real-estate hogging pepsi fountain, out with the ice making machine we rented from Pepsi, and out with the pepsi products. Out with making pepsi orders whenever I wanted to. I still have the old Pepsi brixing cup, and several BIB's of pepsi syrup, as well as a few boxes of pepsi cups and lids.

In with a nice, appealing counter-top Coke fountain, in with coke products, and signage. In with the telemarketing ordering (yuck.) I asked repeatedly for a brixing cup kit, and I asked for a cup dispenser... where are they?

Still out: ice making machine. it's a pain in the butt right now, but a local resturant not very far away is letting us raid their ice making machine as necessary. Hopefully we will have this issue resolved soon... I was told that Coke doesn't rent any ice equipment.

And in case you're wondering, yes, we are pouring coke products into pepsi cups. (We did run out of 20-oz pepsi cups and are now using 24 oz coke cups for our small size)

and while I'm on the thought:
24-oz is our small - $1.75
32-oz is our medium - $2.50
44-oz is our large - $3
Free refills on large

Popcorn is same price for size, (45,85,130oz) same policy on large refills.

We are currently conducting a bit of an experiment in regards to the 4 flavors of coke... (classic, diet, cherry, caffeine free diet) results soon.

"Hinted" at? This was stated on the record as a major advantage for the newly super-sized chain by the Regal Entertainment Group's top executives from the get-go. Indeed, it was used as a selling point to help bolster stock sales in the new company.

The theatres I grew up with have always sold Coke, going back to the mid '40s. Except for maybe a year & a half, we've also been Coke. I tried Pepsi for a while... and found that I wasn't making any more people happy... it was pretty evenly split.

The local bottlers did a lot to influence our decision to go back to Coke. Pepsi appears to be so big, they don't care one way or the other. The local Coke outlet is grossly overpriced and doesn't want to be involved with storage for national or fountain accounts. The equipment & service people are very good, but Coke's telemarketing-type ordering system bites very major [bs]

Over the past couple of years, Coke has forged relationships with some of the major foodservice suppliers. We're now getting our Coke products delivered on the same truck that brings our fries, burgers, chicken strips, napkins, mops & toilet paper, and their salesperson not only has toll-free voice mail and cell numbers, but visits US every week. It took Coke's telemarketing dept over 6 months to notice we weren't using their service anymore.

The wierd part is that I can get this stuff delivered for a little over $8 LESS per BIB than if I drive my own truck into town and get it right out of the bottler's warehouse.

Does nobody here own their own fountain? There is a most excellent guide to setting one up at http://www.digitalhaiku.com/clients/soda/start.htm .

After reading that I fully intend to buy one for our new facility and then we can have both Coke and Dr. Pepper! At our old place, the Pepsi machines were left behind by the previous operator. When we called Pepsi (actually Pepsico doesnt operate in this area, all Pepsi products are handled by a local subcontractor) to see about getting them going again, they instead sent a truck and took them away. After begging, pleading and finally agreeing to an insane lease, they sent us a crappy pre-mix unit that couldnt handle the volume. A typical screening with complimentary drinks would mean changing the cylinder 3 or 4 times. [Mad]

Royal Crown Cola doesn't share an affiliation with Coke or Pepsi. I do know they handled Canada Dry Gingerale in some areas or at least they did 20 years ago. Is anyone aware of a restaurant or something that has gotten away with serving both? Though the one thing that I hate the most is when a bar only has Pepsi products. Coke all the way where I work, Pepsi is horrible anyways...

As for the 7-11 question, I believe it's about contracts and whatnot. A supermarket sells both, Soft Drinks are sold there, but it's not a market in which it would be beneficial to have just one brand, people want a choice when they are shopping or on the road. Now you have McDonalds and Restaurants and whatnot, they get deals from the companies to carry their products. I believe it would be VERY expensive to carry both products pushing that much volume. Convienence stores do it b/c their business really doesn't matter on soft drinks, just that they have them....this is just what I think though, Ic ould be wrong...

You evil little man! People in your neck of the woods are either incredibly stupid or have zero taste buds. I'll admit some people like Coke and others like Pepsi and that's fine, but for you to sell them a substitute product without telling them (even if there are a hundred signs posted), you deserve one hell of a customer ass chewing for that intentional deceipt. That's what I call first rate bad customer service.

I can just imagine how your box office operates. "I'd like two tickets to American Wedding please." Of course by this it would be entirely acceptable to punch up tickets to Freaky Friday since both are comedies...right? [Mad]

In this day & age, if the percentages are better for "Freaky", some sleazebag operators probably do just that.

I didn't read this whole thread. I read pages 1 and 7, so if I repeat something forgive me!

We sell Pepsi. Our supplier will generally do whatever they can for us to keep us happy. We have had relatively few problems in the 10 months I have been there, but we always get good service. We can also order policy trailers from them and they send them free... Yeah, OK - they're advertisements for their products, and most of the time they are annoying, but they get the message across cheap.

The other thing you need to consider is that these companies are into everything. Pepsico owns Pizza Hut, so you get Pepsi there. Coke owns Dominoes (chain) so there you get Coke, etc... It's really a remarkable read if you look into it sometime. I did some reports on companies a few years back and you would be amazed what these places own. Pepsi also owns AMF sporting goods products. Most of the food, beer and tobacco companies are spread out all over creation....

i don't know if they still do the pepsi "dolls" trailer, but it's awesome. i saw it once in a theater, and that's it. we had some lying around, but never actually used them, and now we have coke. in it, barbie (?) dolls violate various rules and suffer the consequences. for example, one of them uses a cell phone and is struck by lightning and burnt to a crisp. it all looks really low-rent and brilliant. they do push pepsi, but all in all they're going for humor more than anything. i love it.

My biggest pet-peeve with Coke... why the heck do you have to re-order back-ordered items? Do they expect you to make your own syrup when they can't deliver it to you the first time? No longer true. PepsiCo spun off its restaurant businesses (Taco Bell/Pizza Hut/KFC) in 1997. These restaurants (along with Long John Silver's and A&W Restaurants) are now owned by Yum! Brands, Inc.

I remember for a while that some Pizza Huts shortly after the spinoff were serving COKE products, though I believe that all the Yum! units all serve Pepsi products (save for Cadbury/Schweppes owned A&W Root Beer and Dr. Pepper which are carred regionally by Pepsi and Coke in the US) now.

We are a Coke theatre. Personally, I like Coke and Pepsi both but seems like I always get better service from Pepsi. Whenever I have a mechanical problem and call coke to send me a rep they always want to refer me to a tech so they can talk me thorugh the problem. That aggrevates me. I am a theatre manager not a Coke maintentance person. I always have to ask them to send out a technician. Also, Coke seems to get my orders mixed up often and its hard to get my rep to call me back concerning marketing and new product info. I never seemed to have these problems with Pepsi, but I guess both companies have good and bad qualities. At least we don't sell RC [Big Grin]

You guys are soooooo lucky! You have beverage companies falling all over themselves trying to give you free equipment and repair service? How great that must be.

Over here there is the same type of service from Coca-Cola Japan but we would be required to buy their syrups at astronomical prices. Something like $50 per BIB.

Nope. I have to order the machines, tubing, post-mix heads, carbonators, etc. Then hook it all up and keep it serviced.

For simplicity we order mostly Coca Cola products but we are free to mix brands and flavors on the same towers. I do all food facilities, food courts and theater. The only ones that are brand specific are Taco Bell (Pepsi) and Burger King (Coke)

It sounds like your theaters get some pretty good perks out of the deal. It is all about territory for the beverage companies. The theaters benefit no matter who they choose. At least that is the way I read the threads here.

I TRIED to look into alternatives to the Big 2 (Pepsi and Coke) like RC or 7Up (which, btw, are owned by the same company, Dr. Pepper-7Up). The area 7Up Rep had BIB available but no fountain equipment or service...and the BIB prices were not attractive. The area RC Rep offered NO fountain service at all. I contacted RC/Dr. Pepper/7Up headquarters in Texas and told them no wonder Coke and Pepsi dominate and added that apparently they do NOT care about being 3rd or less in the industry. They responded with a contact for RC based in Chicago...who proceeded to blow me off. The competition is solely between the big boys! [uhoh]

Just a quick question, how many people order their bib's direct from Coke/Pepsi? When I was G.M.ing it, always ordered direct from Marjack (our concessions supplier...) and their prices were pretty damn good, if memory serves. Almost never had a late delivery, and no headaches! [Big Grin]

When we had Coke we ordered it thru Sysco . Now that we switched to Pepsi we go directly thru Pepsi.

I personally prefer Coke to Pepsi - in a glass bottle.

From a business standpoint -I think RC Cola would be a good choice. Lower Cost of Goods versus the ridiculous cost of Coke and Pepsi.

I've always been a Coke drinker. Pepsi is too sweet for me.
But when it comes to my theatre, we've had a national account with Pepsi for 14 years now and wouldn't change a thing!
Coke had poor service. I also had to order every week and wait for delivery days later.
My local Pepsi distributor checks each week of my needs, and delivers my product. I just leave a note when he should stock up more for the upcoming weeks. Service is great. I can call 24/7 and get a fast response. Pepsi takes care of me! [beer]

We have Pepsi, and I order direct. I never have problems with ordering and delivery, but repair service is so-so at best.

For anything less than a "no soda at all" emergency, it can take a week or more to get a service man here. It can take an entire day or more even for total "no soda" problems.

And, hey, it's not like I'm in the middle of nowhere. I'm in downtown Minneapolis. I'd hate to think what it would be like if you broke down in a small town.

That seems odd, Bill. We have Pepsi as well, and every time I have ever had to call for service they have been out within a few hours, even for minor issues. I've never had to wait more than 24 hrs for service unless they needed to special order a part.

You are serviced out of Burnsville, right?

Pepsi here, always had great service. Never waited more than an hr or two for a tech to show up. I'm 40 miles from their office.

Coke was a nightmare when I used them. Considerably more costly. Very poor service.

I project for the Case Western Reserve University Film Society. Pepsi gave CWRU a lot of $$$ for exclusive rights to sell their product in vending machines, dining halls, and the like, and unfortunately, that's tranlated down to us as well. And we couldn't even weasel a free policy spot out of our distributor. (I asked, and she just sent us a Cinema Concepts catalog with the Pepsi snipe circled)

Coke has always had crappy service...we always outsourced our service....especially after I called coke on a friday with two of the main soda towers down and I was told that earliest someone could come out was monday.....what jackasses!!!!....but coke still wins in my book...the only good pepsi product is Dr. Pepper

Dr Pepper is a Pepsi product? I have been to alot of places that sell Coke and Dr Pepper. The Cinemark I used to work at had both, then they switched to Mr Pibb. McDonalds has Coke and Dr Pepper, so what is it? Pepsi, Coke, or independent.

Dr. Pepper is an independent company. In different markets, it's handled by different bottlers, usually Pepsi.

[Confused]

Has anyone ever done a true blind test to see if it's actually possible to taste the difference between Coke and Pepsi?

Certain precautions must be taken for such a test, one being that the tasting samples should be mixed from the genuine syrup, with the proportion of syrup to water and carbonation strength precisely the same in each batch, and served up in squeaky-clean glasses, not cups. Perhaps similar to wine-tasting.

One of my doctor friends vigorously asserts that as to wine, just buy the cheapest as all wines are basically alcohol. He says in a true blind test conducted under the scientific method it is impossible to tell the difference. I think it was done at Yale where he majored in bio-chemistry, then went on to Yale Medical School.

Too much consumption of soft drinks,. mostly very expensive sugar water, is not good for us, plain water is much better. Many soft drinks contain caffeine which is mildly addictive. If you need a jolt, a 200-mg. caffeine tablet, such as Vivarin, will do the job at a much lower cost... equal to about two cups of coffee, which I don't like, but occasionally it does no harm.

Take pencil and paper and do some figgerin' and you may discover that a gallon of soda pop, sold @ retail price, costs far more than gasoline!! Profits in the soft drink biz are astronomical.
Before Croaka-Cola was invented, people weren't so overweight. The original formula contained cocaine which made the product highly addictive, thus the name "Coke."

And who can forget the wine-tasting sequence between Peter Lorre and Vincent Price when they did "The Cask of Amontillado" in one of the AIP horror trilogies!

The difference is obvious. A blind test can be if you go to a restaraunt and order Coke, and they bring you Pepsi, assuming thats what you meant. It doesnt need to be scientific, its an obvious difference, just taste it. [thumbsup]

we serve coke products. coke, diet coke, sprite, mello yello, hi-c orange, cherry coke, iced tea, and some sort of coke owned lemonade. also, deer park water, and seattle's best coffee (aka starbucks jr.) which is seasonal.

as to the service, cokeman came the other day to check our lines after a repetitive complaint stayed about 15 minutes and left. not fixing the problem in the process. service = poor.

We use Coke products and have for over 30 years. BTW, I wouldn't be caught dead even knowing anyone who couldn't tell the difference between Coke and Pepsi in a blind test. To me it's like the difference between a Lexus and a Kia.

Same goes for those who can't tell the difference in a blind test between white and red wine, Calvin Trillin (New Yorker magazine) notwithstanding. Track down his great tounge-in-cheek article about this in the New Yorker Food Issue in August 2003.

BTW, if you don't like sugar and caffeine loaded drink products, Shut Up! You probably belong to PETA and hate chocolate too.

Why would Coke bag Jolt? Jolt is made by 'one of those' discount bottlers that Coke has spent hundreds of millions (billions?) of dollars trying to differentiate itself from. Coke certainly wouldn't accept a distribution contract from them.

Coke owns mr. pibb. and its gross. Coke and pepsi taste the same.... the difference.

Coke is sold by people. Pepsi is sold by celebrities. Go ahead and drink a soda endorsed by britney spears, beyonce, O-town and Spiderman. Afterwards salute the flag, because only in america does that matter.

Oh come on. Coke and Pepsi don't taste the same. The are both colas so of course there are general similarities. Besides Coke having more bite while Pepsi is milder and sweeter there is also a difference in flavor.

Actually, give me some HoJo Cola. And some HoJO brownies.

Posted by Jason Black (Member # 684) on 09-28-2004, 12:05 AM:

Steve,

I'll give you that they have both are colas and share a basic similarity (they're dark and carbonated, but that's about all they have in common)

Where you think Coke has more of a bite and Pepsi is sweeter, I think plainly the opposite. Pepsi has all teh 'bite' while Coke is the sweeter or the two....

I still prefer Dt. Mtn Dew to any other drink.. Then Diet Coke or C2. All after a fresh cold glass of sweet ice tea tho.. [Smile]

Posted by Mike Blakesley (Member # 26) on 09-28-2004, 01:10 AM:

If you think Coke is sweeter, then your machine needs brixing now. Pepsi is easily the sweeter of the two.

Anyone who can't tell the difference between Coke and Pepsi needs to put in for a taste buds transplant. It's night and day!

Posted by Brad Miller (Member # 2) on 09-28-2004, 04:20 AM:

Clearly Jason's Pepsi machines have too much CO2 in the brix. Pepsi is much sweeter than Coke. That's why kids generally like Pepsi better, but adults generally prefer Coke.

In my O.F. opinion, neither Pepsi nor Coke tastes as good as it used to, since they switched from cane to beet sugar, years ago. Haven't tasted quite the same since glass bottles went away, either. Not to mention plastic bibs .. ewwww. [Big Grin]

Pepsi is definitely the more sweet of the two .. always has been.

Jason, salt or sugar. Which is sweeter? [Big Grin]

Posted by Steve Kraus (Member # 476) on 09-28-2004, 07:05 PM:

Aren't the flavoring ingredients only a tiny part of the syrup, the rest being high fructose corn syrup (sweetener)? What's the mix (brix) for each? I guess you would also need to take some syrup samples and let the water content dry off. But if what is left is mostly just sweetener and taking into account the mix formulation it should be easy to compare the amount of sweetener per unit of the final product. Surely there is more in Pepsi.

Posted by Brad Miller (Member # 2) on 09-28-2004, 09:04 PM:

Sugared drinks have a 5 to 1 ratio on the brix. Sugar-free drinks (and Mr.Pibb) have a 5.5 to 1 ratio on the brix. Both Coke and Pepsi would be considered a sugared drink.

All pepsi where I work. The funny thing about it is Coke sent me rolling stock for the 1st 8 months we were open. They made good test loops and provided lotsa film for training people how to splice.

I don't taste the Pepsi being sweeter, but it does have a slightly different aftertaste that seems very sugary. Coke is very balanced, with no variations. Pepsi, to me, seems all over the place. I've only had one or two negative Coke experiences from a tower...Pepsi, on the other hand, is hit or miss.

Let me start off with the fact that Diet Coke is NASTY! If I got to choose from any soda it would always be Regular Coke. If I go to a place that serves Pepsi it is Diet Pepsi for me, the regular stuff is WAY too sweet. So, I'll drink Regular Coke but not Diet Coke, and Diet Pepsi but not regular Pepsi...

One of the first notes I make to myself when I enter a theatre lobby is what kind of soda/pop/soda-pop/etc. is sold. I am extremely partial to a theatre that sells Coke. I think it goes well with the popcorn and candy. The only disadvantage is the fact that Mountain Dew doesn't come with it. While I personally don't care for Dew, many younger people love it. Mellow Yellow is a bitch to order special when you're part of a large chain. In fact, a couple of years ago we lost all non-carbonated Coke products such as Hi-C, Hi-C Pink Lemonade, and Raspberry Nestea. Company said it didn't sell well enough. The one thing Pepsi can't come close to is Cherry Coke. Coke certainly has the cherry cola market down.

..like choosing between a Blonde and a Brunette: both are tops, yet a personal preference.

We do Pepsi at our theatres. Pepsi treats us small operators much better than do the Coke people-who wants the huge accounts.

Shoot, even Coke even had their own finance company, CCFC, which supplied the monies to Crapalex Odeon to buy their Strong booth stuff in the early days.

I'm sure when you travel around all over the country and throughout the states, you would see that the small stores would be advertizing Pepsi on the side or front of the stores-never Coke. Pepsi's always were much kinder to the smaller businesses than was Coke.
