"Most of AMC's screens are in the southern and western United States ..."Looks like they missed the Northeast! Over Memorial Day the AMC Empire in Times Square did better than all but 1 other New York theater on Pearl Harbor.

Maybe back in 1985, it was world class but within the past 5 years the quality went out the window. They closed just this past week. They used to be a first run house but as of late they haven't. I think they're newest title was Kingdom Come and went back as far as O Brother Where Art Thou.
Not upset to see it go.

My guess would be we are seeing the beginning of a trend. As these incompetently-run chains drive customers away with all the bad projection and many other problems so extensively annotated in these Forums, the inevitable will come to pass. Look for a closing of 3-5,000 screens in the next 3 years.Where I live, the number of people who "Just Don't Go" any more and wait for DVD is on a steady upwards curve. Our community would be best served by a single 10-plex well-managed with good projection and I think we could get people to come back, but it cannot happen until carmike goes down. Situation Existing is a Lost Cause.
But then there will be the issue of "Is Exhibition a good business to get into these days?"
I'm not sure.

Keep in mind the closing 'announcement' was made as part of a conference call with stock market analysts designed to offset the report of another quarter of losses. As any major corporation knows, the quickest to boost a stock price is to 'announce' layoffs and plant closings. Whether these announced layoffs and closings actually occur is usually another story altogether.

AMC will close the Rockaway 7-12 in New Jersey after Labor Day. It's doing OK for a 6-plex but the mall management wants the theater out in order to have more retail space.Originally AMC ran two 6-plexes in Rockaway -- the 1-6 outside the mall and the 7-12 inside. The 1-6 closed in 1998.

The company said that it had forgiven $19.8 million in loans to Peter Brown, its chairman and CEO, and Craig Ramsey, its CFO. It also said that its first-quarter loss was wider than originally estimated. Commenting on the revelation, Daily Variety observed today (Tuesday): "It wasn't quite like yelling 'fire' in a crowded theater, but almost." Shares in the company closed at $8.80, off $2.35, a 25-percent drop. At one point during the day they were off 30 percent."

All of the MN GCC's turned over to AMC about two or three months ago, including the Mall of America 14. The kicker is AMC has left the GCC signs all over the Mall of America theater! Not enough funding to replace them I guess

But in all seriousness, with the Mall of America, the GC sign there is a major undertaking to replace both cost and manpower-wise based on its size and location. From what I have heard they are going to be dealing with it in the fall.

AMC closed the Rockaway 7-12 on July 28. Per local press reports a Best Buy will fill the theater's space.

AMC will also close the Christiana Mall 5-Plex On September 1st. This former GCC theater has been unprofitable for the past several years, now finally my theater won't have to share product anymore

Jim -Sharing product is not always a bad thing. For instance ... your theater will now have to play every little picture that comes along. No longer will your booker have the crappy 5-plex to "dump" crap film on. Say good-bye to multiple prints of good movies. Next time you talk to Scott ... tell him Spaeth says hi (he used to book me when I was running the theater in MN).

Thats a good point Mike, however by this theater closing, it will allow us to make further improvements to our existing theater.

After more than 15 years the AMC (nee General Cinema) Bridgewater Commons will soon say "finis".
Mall management wants the theater out so Bloomingdale's can add a home furnishings department. That's in line with the mall's expansion plans which the local planning board approved this week.
AMC leaving Bridgewater means a bonanza for Reading in Manville -- provided Reading makes up with Universal and Fox. Otherwise people may have to drive at least 30 minutes to see a Universal or Fox film.
