I've been told that a 2 year old Regal 14-plex is closing this week in Columbus OH. Regal has never been a major player in this area, coming in very late after AMC and Cinemark built up the place. This theatre is about 1 mile from a competing Marcus 16-plex. For awhile, they did not play the same films, but that stopped some time ago.Their other 16-plex is in an isolated section of town with no competition.
The 4 faux-Cinemark theatres around seem to be holding out, at least for now.

Today's newspaper reported that the theatre actually closed last (Wednesday, 10/10/2001) because most of the employees didn't show up for work!Honestly, it won't be missed.

One of the two Regal's here in town Myrtle Beach, SC will close tonight. The announcement was made in today's paper. This is one of the properties that they had been trying to unload on someone for years but, from what I gather, could not due to lease negotiations. ------------------

I love it when this happens. Same thing happened with UA. I remember the owner of Cinema West calling UA on a regular basis asking if they wanted to sell certain locations, and they said they would for some ridiculous price that nobody ever would pay for such a bad location. Where does it get them to hold out for more money?!?!? It gets the theatre closed or a newer better theatre built down the street.If these big companies just took an objective look at certain markets, and gave up the fight in ones they've lost their hold on, these companies would last much much longer.

According to an article in Saturday October 13th's Globe & Mail newspaper (Canada) Regal Cinemas has filed for bankruptsy protection.

The Regal Lincoln Village 6, formerly the Lincoln 3 in Austin, TX is now closed as of 10/11/01. Almost one year to the day after the GCC Highland 10 closed. There are now no Theaters in this huge open zone in Austin. The shortest-lived theatre in the zone was the old Rand Bridge Creek 8, which only lasted 8 months at best. That leaves the Arbor 7 as what is left of the old Presidio Theaters chain here. Regal also closed the Rolling Oaks Mall 6 in San Antonio. This theater was one of the last built Sensible sized theatres before this obsession with lets put 400 screens in a complex, stupidity, took over the industry. Rolling Oaks was the last built Act III/Santikos theatre before Regal bought them out.

We just had family visiting with us from York, Pa. They report that the Regal complex at Queensgate shopping center has just closed. Guess it's all starting to go down with the recent Chapter 11 filing.Can anyone confirm this closing?

The Queensgate was a 10 plex. A former converted store, it was one of those operations that give theatres a bad name. It had seperate booths for each screen. Several of the auditoriums were about 90 seats each & when you stood up in the back row your head was in the bottom of the projector beam. The Queensgate was an acquisition to get Regal into the local market. Regal then built a 13 about 3 years ago in the West Manchester Mall only a few miles from the Queensgate. Everyone thought the Queensgate would have immediately closed when West Manchester opened. It was surprising it lasted this long.

Queensgate is a ten-plex which opened July 1990. Very bad conversion of an existing building. Used to be an old mall built in 1960. The theatres occupied the old stores. Six theatres Kelmar mono and four theatres Smart Mod 2's and 3's. Single story building with seven boothes.

Rumor has it that Regal will close its two year old state-of-the-art 12 plex in Phillipsburg, New Jersey just across the river from Easton, Pennsylvania. It was the most recent addition to a spate of additional plexs opened in the last 2 to 3 years in what was an already over saturated Lehigh Valley market before the latest round of building began.

Rumor has it that Regal's Quakertown, PA plex may also be on the chopping block. It has a fabulous old time looking marquee with scads of expensive neon.....only one problem.....the theatre is hidden in the rear of the shopping center where no one can see it!

And I have heard that we have already closed all the theatres that are going to close, and that no more will close any time soon. But let's not believe all the rumors we hear.

I saw in the local newspaper here in Nashville (The Tennessean) on Monday that there was a huge legal notice in the classifieds section of the paper regarding the "Notice To Creditors" involved in the Regal bankruptsy case. I've never seen a legal notice so large. It was about 3 columns wide and covered the full length of the page.In regards to the neon, the Regal Hollywood 27 here in town is covered with the stuff. The skies over the mall it's next to glow a faint pinkish / purple color at night. It looks really cool, but I'm sure it was expensive.

I recently spoke with regals PA area film booker. He confirmed that Regal Cinemas has filed for bankruptcy. Oh, well, I always go to the Cinema Center, a local 3-plex running all of their movies in mono. It may not be state of the art, but at least I can see what's supposed to be happening on the screen, which, at our local regal, was frequently an impossible task due to the amount of dirt and scratches on the film (on opening weekend, mind you)

I generally don't do this, but John, I have to agree with you. I really peeves me to see that I have to work with some managers in this company that does not give a 
about film done right or presentation. If I see the smallest of a nick or scratch on any print in my building, I have my guys rebuilding the film path. It is a shame that managers in this company and other companies hire or train jackasses to run the booth. I am proud to say that I run a VERY tight ship at my location and my projectionists actually give a damn. One day the others will wake up (hopefully).------------------
