And for all of you, I just spoke with Sally Middleton (contact person) at THX last week and placed my order. She informed me that THX has deleted the GRAND trailer and replaced it with the SIMPSONS. Yes the SIMPSONS is back in stock, both in Scope and Flat mine are on the way. It is not on the order form, but when you order, just pencil it in.

"Turn it up, Turn it uh-up" (this while peoples heads are exploding and teeth are shattering.) I can't really understand why THX actually made those as they only perpatuate the notion that "Digital sound just means louder sound" and THX is nothing but a volume increase. Its not a technically showing trailer, like some of the THX: TEX ones (i'm a sucker for the cows!). My favorite is the THX: Cimmarron.

I think the Simpsons THX trailer appeared on an episode first and then as a trailer. But I could only guess as to why THX played along with the joke in the first place (allowing it to be on the TV show with the real THX "deep note") and then ratified it by putting it in theatres. I guess those folks at Lucasfilm aren't too stuffy.

Tom Holman seems to like The Simpsons trailer a lot. He spoke of it as though it were an honor to have been spoofed by the show. The entire time I was attending, that was the trailer he always showed to close out his first lecture to incoming production students at USC.In a real-world situation, I think it depends on the movie you are about to show. If it's a movie that a bunch of stoner kids are coming to see and their brownies are just kicking in then that's a great trailer to run. On the other hand, if you're about to run "On Golden Pond" then maybe it might be best to forego the THX trailer entirely.
Is there a quiet THX logo trailer?
I'll tell you which THX trailers I can't stand...The ones with the robot guy...Tex? Hate those.

Bob, that sounds like a question for Karen. You could get an older disc that has the Simpsons audio track on it (a R14 from a feature disc) and burn your own disc, but that would tie up your third cdrom drive in the player. What's more important, playing the THX logo in digital or the trailers?

Well, thats a no brainer....the trailers will come first. I was just wondering. I just got our theatre set up with the trailer discs, and I am working with our corp. office to get the rest of the circuit up and running with them. We have over 100 screens in the circuit and I hear going to be adding more. BTW, my flat Simpsons is defective, it ran totally out of focus.

Did you try to focus it, or just noticed it played through with a different focus setting? Odds are the print is on acetate base stock and/or has been wound for so long on those tiny cores that it will take a few days of running (maybe longer) to let it relax.

I was in the auditorium watching, and the trailer was out of focus right away and got worse and worse as it went along, and got very shaky too. Probably an acetate one that's been sitting on a shelf for a while. I think we'll pull it off and wind it on a larger core for a few days to try and straighten it out a little. I hope with The Simpsons back in inventory we'll see some on polyester, though.

Wind it backwards, so that whichever way the center of the film is protruding from the curl, that side is against the core. That will speed things up.

"Core Set" is a real issue for film that has been wound on a small core for a long time. The film takes the shape of a "clockspring", and will take awhile to relax. I agree with Brad that winding the film with the opposite orientation will help. IMHO, trailers should never be wound on a core/hub smaller than 3-inches (75mm) in diameter.Don't forget that there is a slight focus shift between old triacetate prints (base thickness 0.0056 inches) and current ESTAR base prints (base thickness 0.0047 inches).

My favorite THX trailer is "Cimarron," but I really wish there was a quad format version of it. I think it sucks that you can only order new copies of that trailer in either SR optical or Dolby Digital. If anyone from THX is reading, please make a quad format version of it soon! And while they're at it, how about a version of it for the "THX Digital Mastering" snipes on DVD? I'm sick of seeing "Broadway" used over and over for that one.For awhile, the "Grand" trailer was available only in DTS, but THX did go to the trouble of making a Dolby Digital version of it a few years ago.
To answer the question, "is there a quiet THX trailer," I guess the choice for that would be "Broadway" even though it is not totally quiet. That one sounds pretty beefy in DTS.
I downloaded a bunch of .VOB files of all those THX trailers and even the THX "Jungle Sounds" audio only thingie from some French internet site a couple years ago. Since THX is dragging their feet on coming up with a good promotional DVD like what DTS and Dolby have already been doing, I may just make my own DVD of all that stuff whenever I buy a DVD-RW drive.

I have only heard the GRAND trailer in DTS. I would be afraid to hear it in anything else. The GRAND is my favorite, it was the first THX I had ever seen/heard. Cimmaron is my second favorite choice.

I got a little THX trailers DVD with my "THX certified Dell PC". There's four trailers on it ("Broadway," "Grand," "Tex" and "Tex 2: Moo Can"). The titles on the trailers are modified to include the Dell brand.The "Grand" trailer is incredibly loud and sends out a real powerful sub bass signal when the THX logo drops down into view. That trailer was first introduced in 1993 around when "Jurassic Park" was released. I was really blown away by it when I saw "JP" for the first time at the Northpark #1 in Dallas.
I really wish THX would make more trailers in the vein of "Cimarron" and "Grand." For the time being, I guess I just have to hope "Cimarron" gets a Quad Format print redo and maybe Lucasfilm will wake up and incorporate it into the "THX Digital Mastering" thing for DVD. I remember some THX certified Laserdiscs carrying the Cimarron trailer.

I have 3 or 4 lazer disc's with a cut version of the cimmarron . They only show the very end of the trailer Where the THX logo is in this vast red looking space and the logo goes through you.
I saw "THE GRAND" at the Penn Square mall cinema back in summer of 94 when the cinema was a GCC. Talk about bass!! The bass was so tight and so powerfull it seemed like my stomach was tying itself in a not. You couldnt here your own self talk, but the sound was never deffoning. The Detail in the trailer is very amazing to. Im really hoping for a home DTS version of the trailer thats faithfull to the cinema version.

They have that cropped version of Cimmaron at the end of the Lucasfilm WOW promo film. our auditorium doors were on automatic closers that were cued with the 'lights down' cue, which was placed just before the THX trailer. If you had the port window open when the THX trailer hit, you got blasted in the face by a rush of wind as the doors closed in the auditorium. It was a real kick to have that happen while hearing the THX logo sound. A real life version of that Simpsons trailer.

if you really want some THX trailers. Then play some film sub run. I play both subrun and on the break. On the subrun ones this summer i have gotten 1 flat and 1 scope Thx trailer of the begining of the feature. also 1 carmike and regal policy trailers.I would like to thank whoever left it on.tim

I just picked up the new "Speed" Five Star Collection edition. This is the first "THX Digital Mastered" title I've seen using the THX "Grand" trailer for the intro.Now if they can just get "Cimarron" put together...

Bobby, Its the Grand trailer in DTS ? Most dvd aurthors are way too lazy to bother with DTS on the THX trailers. The only other THX trailer I have seen that is in both DD and DTS is the T2:SPECIAL EDITION dvd.
How does the GRAND trailer sound on DVD?
It wouldnt surprize me that the TEX MOO-CAN is on the speed 2 dvd. That movie is a joke.

Ron, if your "Speed" DVD has the "Moo Can" trailer on it then it must be a different package released for Canada. The discs here in America have the "Grand" trailer on them.And, yes, the "Grand" trailer is only in Dolby Digital on the "Speed" DVD. It is pretty common for Fox DVDs featuring both DTS and Dolby Digital tracks to feature the THX snipe only in Dolby Digital. In fact, there are very few DVDs where a THX Digital Mastering trailer is featured with a DTS track.
The "T2" Ultimate Edition DVD is the only one I can think of as well that definitely has the specialized "T2 THX" trailer encoded in both Dolby Digital and DTS formats (it may also be the only DVD in the US market to carry both Dolby Digital and DTS trailers --"Aurora" and "Flying Disc" respectively).
The "Grand" trailer sounds decent on the "Speed" DVD, although the version I have on my Dell THX trailers sampler is noticeably louder. "Grand" was originally geared for DTS theaters (it debuted around the time "Jurassic Park" was released and for a good while was available only in SR/DTS form). I think the current versions of "Grand" are available in quad format. I wish THX would quad format "Cimarron" already. It is cool to hear it Dolby Digital (or 70mm mag), but it would be nice to be able to play it on a DTS setup as well.
Back to "Moo Can," the "Toy Story" Ultimate Toy Box set has a different and much better mix of "Moo Can" than what you normally hear on other trailer sampler discs as well as the standard theatrical trailer. I think they tweaked the mix for DD-EX and beefed up the bass and surround activity specifically for that DVD release.

I seem to remember "Ted Costas" formerly of THX stating they were going to release all of the THX trailers on dvd's
We may get to see "Cimmaron" yet. I want to see the original "Brodway", heard in theaters when it was first released in 83.
Doesnt THX limited have a say so on what sound format their trailers are available in on dvd?
Its been a long while since I have heard "GRAND" in 5.1 and I am sad to hear that the powers that be have decided to present it in Dolby Digital.

How THX trailers are presented pretty much depends on the movie studio and its home video unit. If Universal Home Video did a lot more THX Digital Mastered titles (I think "Cape Fear" is their only one to date but I could be wrong) then you might see DTS encodings on DVD for those trailers.Fox is just a little inconsistent with regard to the trailers they show on DVD. The DTS trailer is not always included on their DD/DTS DVDs, and then they only seem to use the boring piano trailer when they do include it. That doesn't make sense for DVDs like "Die Hard." They're finally breaking out of the habit of showing the shortened version "Broadway" and varying things up. I saw the "Cavalcade" THX trailer on "From Hell". And "Grand" on "Speed" was a nice surprise. But I don't think Fox has ever included a THX snipe on DVD with both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 audio.
