Here is a LA times brief for MATRIX RELOADED :

I also believe and wish this movie near 150 Million USD till sunday night.
Your take ?

IF they dont factor in thursday, no it won't beat it.

I am pretty sure that Thursday's numbers are going to count as far as the opening weekend goes. Not only that, we were told that we are not suppose to report tonight's nunmbers (the 10:00 shows) until tomorrow night. And judging by all the advance tickets that we have already sold, I think that it is a safe bet that Spiderman's opening record is as good as gone.
Going by all these damn prints that were relesed, I can't wait to see what the studios do for the next movie that will try to break this record.

Here we go again- everyone gets sucked into the opening weekend hype. Exactly what the majors want! Talk to me three or four weeks down the road. Could we be on the verge of another Pearl Harbor? Matrix Reloaded is tracking about the same.
What we need is product with legs like Grable!

One thing you are forgetting is that Matrix is rated R.
With the crack-down on under-17 getting in to R, that cuts out a huge part of the crowd that went to see Spiderman.
So I don't think Matrix will be anywhere near Spiderman.

I say no it won't beat Spiderman.

I say it will.

It is a record of sorts that this movie is taking to screens as early as at 10 pm wednesday night.
Starting with wedesday night and ending on the sunday night, I believe this movie should have no difficulty in reaching the 150 Million USD mark. However, in order to determine whether this film exceeds the record set by Spiderman, I consider the performance on the Thursday, Friday and the Saturday ought to be considered.
The fact that this movie has secured an R seems to have done nothing to the excitement bubbling everywhere on the internet. In this respect, I bet that internet today acts as the greatest tool available to the studios and reach ever wider audiences.
And reviews that have come on the internet have played down the significance of the R and seem to prescribe less caution. That the first Matrix has come to be more appreciated in the years after its release, that very appreciation also acts to bring down the possible significance of the R rating. Very very few people would consider MATRIX RELOADED with the same degree of caution they would exercise over a movie like HANNIBAL. Therefore, the R mark cannot have much of an impact on the performance of this movie - at the most, the impact thereon must be very marginal.
I wonder why the studio in this case would instruct theatres not to report the earnings for the wednesday until after thursday.
In any case, as an answer to the question posed here, my take is hereby reaffirmed - MATRIX RELOADED will beat the Spider-man's record opening.

I believe the film grosses are calculated for the Fri, Sat and Sun dates, These are always consistent.
Of course, the studio will state the gross for 'n' days to show off.
Also, there will be news stories that 'X' title pulled in 'Y' dollars over a 'n' day period.

I love reading the articles about box office reciepts on the weekend after a major release. "Matrix did not beat Spiderman's 3-day record, but when you factor in blah blah blah....36% of the audience were female, 60% were male....this is 12% higher than last week and 5% higher than the year-ago period...."
I wonder how much that job pays to gather and analyze all that crap that few people care about.
Oh, and no, it won't beat Spiderman's 3-day record. They only count Fri, Sat & Sun in the weekend numbers, the only exception being Holiday weekends. Not even either of the Star Wars had its Wednesday/Thursday numbers counted into the weekend.

The opening gross is the only thing that matters. If it doesn't beat Spiderman, then the movie must be crap and therefore a worse movie than Spiderman and I probably won't waste my time seeing it. I didn't care for Spiderman too terribly much, but it is the best movie ever made due to its opening groos which, as I said, is the only thing that matters.

Yes Joe, you are correct.

Now I get a feeling that some people actually do resent to see a film reach new heights. I wonder why it is so..

I don't think "Matrix" will come close to "Spiderman's" opening weekend of $114,844,116. "Spiderman's" opening day was $39,406,872.
I hate that most people put so much hype into opening weekends. Who really cares. What matters how well the movie does the 3rd and 4th weekend.

All I know it that I am seeing a lot of the same people here tonight to see the Matrix that were here last night for the 10:00 shows.

The take from the Wednesday night shows is around 10 Million USD - more than twice the estimated 4 million USD.

A CNN report has just come in that MATRIX RELOADED has in fact secured 42.5 million for the thursday, making it the biggest single day earning for any film in Box-office history.

I may end up being wrong after all. It seems that the Matrix:Reloaded might wind up blowing it's load too early (with the wednesday and thursdays shows) and won't break Spiderman's opening record. What I mean is that the Matrix 2 will make more money in three days (Thurs, Fri, Sat) than Spiderman did, but it may not break Spiderman's OFFICAL three day opening weekend record because Thursday's shows will not count for the Matrix weekend mumbers. But we will have to wait and see.

Before the film's release, pundits were saying "Matrix: Reloaded" could not beat the opening weekend gross of "Spiderman" since it is an R-rated film. I have to say that does nothing to keep kids away in a film like this.
Normally an action movie is made to hit the PG-13 mark. The studios figure they'll market the film to appeal to adults, but kids will still be able to get into the door. Adults just bring their kids along and save paying some babysitter. With "The Matrix" the kids are bringing the adults along to get in the door.
There is actually a good possibility "Matrix: Reloaded" would have made less money if it were rated PG or PG-13. Parents not interested in the film would just drop their kids off to the show and not bother having to buy a ticket for themselves.

What about the performance of MATRIX RELOADED in other markets. It has released in 20 other countries though it deserved to release in more countries like how X2 did.
Internet penetration is very high in India and I can see that people here are not going to wait till June 13 when this movie will release across India. It is widely being reported here that MATRIX RELOADED has broken a few box office records through the media.
Pirate copies of MATRIX RELOADED have arrived everywhere across India (available from Friday evening) and it is the pirates who will steal the show here. These pirated copies must be coming from Malaysia because those who have seen them say that the DVDs have subtitles in chinese and malay. And as I understand Warner Bros, India will not be given the prints till June 3rd.
Only wish the studios will speed up their releases soon here in India. And X2 which will release here on 30 May hardly has any excitement left. The pirated DVDs for that movie too have killed the prospects of business on the big screen.

So much for the theory that R-rated movies are on the way out. Now that the five R-rated sequels this summer will make big bucks, the R movie will be back in a big way, boxoffice will plummet, and all the "suits" will wonder why.

I have a tendency to agree with Michael. It didn't do all that well today in Anacortes. Hopefully the reason was we had a "Waterfest" going on in town, but I don't think that took a real big chunk out of today's attendance. Our 9:30 show was better than the rest, but it was not a full house.

Yes, but they added the Wednesday nite shows to Thursday's grosses to get there. If the multi's with 6+ prints of that thing started each one as they were supposed to, there were a whole lot of starts on Wednesday.
My daughter told me tonight that the Seattle Cinerama is running darn near 'round the clock with this show.

Spider-Man's record is safe for now. The Matrix Reloaded grossed an estimated $93.26M for Fri-Sat-Sun ($135.768M since Wednesday night). Spider-Man brought in $114.844M its first 3 days.
Yesterday the AMC Empire in NYC was superbusy on The Matrix Reloaded to a degree: Early matinees not sold out, early afternoon sold out, 2:30-5 PM not sold out, 5-10:30 PM sold out.

MATRIX BACKERS WON'T SEE MUCH RETURN FROM THE MATRIX RELOADED.
Despite the huge success of the "Matrix Reloaded" opening, Australian investors at Roadshow Village, the company that co-financed it, are not likely to see any profits from it, The Sydney Morning Herald observed today (Tuesday). The revenue from the picture, will be used to offset losses, pay down debt and finance other production. Village Roadshow suffered huge losses last year from the film

Thats fuuny but when you add the profits that will come from Matrix:Revolutions and the insane amount of product tie-ins not to mention the future DVD sells, I am pretty sure that the company isn't a billion dollars in debt.
