This month has had quite a few: Bend It Like Beckham, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Chicago. Now, The Italian Job is coming back for Labor Day in a wide re-release.

According to the Upcoming Movies site, The Italian Job "was prematurely knocked out of theaters by the sheer multitude of June releases". [Roll Eyes] More likely it's an effort by Paramount to get that film above $100M.

The Italian Job re-release might keep some theaters from getting arty product for Labor Day. That's when Le Divorce goes semi-wide, American Splendor has its national break and (Weinstein family willing) The Magdalene Sisters may go national. Also, The Secret Lives of Dentists is scheduled to expand to the Philly suburbs that week.

Yeah, I was a little suprised to see we are getting The Italian Job back. Although it was a good movie, and was doing well still when we lost it in July, there is no need to get it back. I agree, give us some more art and indy films. Hollywood is starting to annoy me with these re-releases when there are other films that beg to be seen. Getting Whale Rider this past month was a nice suprise and it did very well for us.

Speaking of pointless re-releases, we also got Charlie's Angels 2 back for just one show a day this past week. It did horrible.

I'd rather see restored prints of Vertigo, Lawrence, or any other classic film over stuff like Charlie's Angels and the Italian Job!

We are holding our last print of the Italian job over until the re-release. I'm sure it would do better than Marci-X even after being out for two months.

"Italian Job" is tenatively scheduled at my theatre sometime either later this moth or early September. Why?

Why are there re-releases? Have you looked at how many new commercial films are supposed to go into wide release for Labor Day Weekend? According to Rentrak only Jeepers Creepers 2 is going wide with 2800 locations. Next wide release after than is the Order on 9/5. By the way, there are expected to be 1700 dates on Italian Job for Labor Day Weekend. That's why Le Divorce, Magdolene Sisters, Secret Lives of Dentists and others are expanding. To fill a void in the marketplace and snag dates beyond their core arthouse bookings. Whale Rider is also going on tv for Labor Day weekend and should pick up some additional dates too.

Ky called it on the button: The Loews New Brunswick picks up Whale Rider today for a double-up [Frown] while the AMC Hamilton gets it back for a full round.

The Italian Job re-release also played hell with arty product as I forecast. The AMC Hamilton passed on Thirteen, The Magdalene Sisters and American Splendor for this week at least. (Thirteen expands to NYC suburbs today off its big Manhattan opening.)

BTW, the AMC Hamilton never lost The Italian Job since it opened.
