For the first time in the UK i believe, our cinema chain is screening the advert reels in three screens that are usually on 35mm, in DLP cinema. The results are very good, equally as good quality as the 35mm reels. This is the first trial of this kind in the U.K. i believe.
The cinemas are all owned and operated by City Screen LTD

Which screen at the Cameo [The old Sc 1 or the shopunits 2+3]

What format are they provided on? [I would love to not have to splice the changes into the ads each week]

I assume that they are provided by Carlton [UK Screen Advertising/ TV company] since the Cameo changed to them from Pearl and Deen [also owned by a TV company] a few months ago

Unless Darren has been very busy with miniature DLP's it's screen 1, there's barely room for the Century in the wee booths.

UCI have been doing this at some sites for a wee while now, Gateshead Metrocentre springs to mind.

Where is the funding coming from for the DLP's? Is it City Screen, Carlton/Ad contractor or split?

It's an interesting development, Although you only mention the ads, It would be nice to keep the hassle of ads AND trailers on DLP, with the feature in 35mm.

As asked in another thread, are most trailers available in digital form on a timely basis? What file formats? Is there a list of trailers available in digital form for theatres showing a feature using Digital Cinema?

The last Darren told me about this, the process sounds a bit labour intensive! The 35mm advert reels are prepared by Carlton as per normal, then transferred to 2k digi at a London facilities house. The resulting tape is then flown to Holland to be encoded into the proprietary format used by the City Screen DLP system, and then the encoded DLP data tape is flown back to York to be uploaded onto the projector's server!

Apparently one DVD-ROM (i.e. 4.7gb) can hold around 10 minutes of footage in this format: over a broadband connection that should be downloadable in an hour or two, so I guess eventually the DLP data could be delivered online. Furthermore I see no reason why you couldn't just download the new ads and trailers, delete the old ones locally and re-edit the show on a timeline display, just as if you were using Premiere or Final Cut Pro for video editing.

It is Screen one in the Cameo. The other sites in the UK using digital screen adverts are all powerpoint style shows. UCI have alot of screens with it.
This is full HD quality moving adverts.
As Leo descibed, the tranfer was done like this from 35mm as Carlton im led to believe only make the 35mm print runs once a month. In future all out HD adverts will be direct transfers from the original source material. But the result at the moment with the Telecined 35mm add reels look great.

The encoding to the EVS server was done at EVS in belgium as our Encoder here in the U.K. is curently been upgraded.

As for trailers, we are working on that. Distibutros release DVD's of there latest Mainstream films, but DVD is not good enough for Cinema screens. So as of yet no HD trailers are been screened.
The word Digital seems to be used for everything. Our full HD digital DLP cinema systems are a world apart from Carlton/UCI's digital advrets, which are all still images.

No we do proper presentation with 70mm and all 35mm shows, as adverts are only 6-8 mins, it needs good presetation to change from digital to 35mm seemlessly. leave the IT to the guys in belgium at the present.

Anyone who fancy's a mini holiday, come to York on the 22nd or 23rd November, Earthquake in 70mm and SENSURROUND.

10-30am KRAKATOA EAST OF JAVA in 70mm CINERAMA
1-30pm EARTHQUAKE in 70mm SENSURROUND

Tickets selling fast, a film event not to be missed, and Earthquake will probably be repeated in Sensurround again de to demand.

Sorry not been on here as busy,
Screen frame decided it wouldn't bend, without major re-building,
We advertised Krakatoa on the posters and in the brouchure as 'Made for the Cinerama Screen'
So appologise for any confusion, but asked in the budget for york for 50k for new curved screen and tabs, don't think ill get it somehow! Worth a try though i thought.

That dam baffle wall will be a pain to curve, might try get Uri Geller to rub it all a little!?
Peter any relpy from THX re the CP200 insallation?

P.S. Would love to put an Imax in york, think that old building called 'York Minster' would make a great Imax 4-plex, Its got the height.

There were plans for many years to put an IMAX theatre in York.
The favourite site was on the city side of Lendal Bridge where there used to be a car dealership.
They even shot some IMAX footage in anticipation. A guy called David Taylor and his company York Films covered the Pope's visit in 1982. The footage still exists somewhere.

BTW I had excellent reports from Tony and Duncan about the Sunday screening of Earthquake. They were particularly impressed by the professor and his sidekick inspecting the building for seismic damage!

York would make a great IMAX film, what with the Vikings, Trains and the Pope! Would love to work on Imax one day.
The site where the cinema was going to be built, as part of a Hotel complex I believe, is now Norwich Union HQ. What a waste ehh!
Looks like an Earthquake may come to Bradford next march, need to do some testing in December in Pictureville.

The pathetic thing is that the trailer for "Good Boy" looks far better from DVD than from 35mm
