The Film-Tech Drink will be as always on Wednesday evening. It will be at Bally's as it has been the last few years. Details will be available at the Jack Roe booth (next to the restrooms) on Wednesday, as Bally's won't reserve us a specific room until that day. I will make it a point to post a note on the website sometime Wednesday morning/afternoon once we know.

Brad, we hopefully will have an SUV for the ShoWest trip this year (Costco, anyone?) and this time no turn signals that can be heard for six miles

We also should get a list prior to arrival for Quark's so we can have a ballpark number to reserve for at a better time this year.

Does anyone know what the cost of the single day trade show only pass is? $225 for all three days is a little out of my range.

Also, what "credentials" do I need to bring to prove that I'm in the industry? Will a pay stub do?

For a one-day trade show pass, ask a trade show exhibitor for a guest pass.

You don't think Brad forked over $800 for a ticket, do you?

As usual, I will be working there in some fashion or another. I may actually get to meet more than 2 members for once. For the last 3 years, I have just missed everybody that usually goes by just a few minutes or something happens at my theatre where I have to go back (like an audit last year).

Out of curiousity..

How many of you MANAGERS out there are able to go to ShowWest on the company? I'm betting next to none, unless you work for a "indie". It's a shame that in 16 years, not once has anyone inside this company, aside from corporate exec's, been afforded the opportunity to attend. Realistically, I can see why, but you'd think that it could be used as a company "reward" of sorts.. After all, it is written off as a business expense for them anyway...

If not, could this expense be written off one's taxes if one chose to attend and paying out of their own pocket?

So Regal Entertainment Group has 530 theatres. So that's 530 times $800 for ShoWest, $200 for the average plane ticket to Las Vegas, $400 for staying at Ballys, if they are lucky.

So than some hot, young executive comes along and says, I can save the company $750,000 per year. How, you ask? By not sending the managers to ShoWest.

United Artists used to send one manager per district with "date" to ShoWest. They were the winners for the UA Presidents Club.

That said, there are plenty of theatre managers at ShoWest. They come from Regal, Century and Crown and are all working in the Las Vegas area.

But remember N.A.T.O stands for National Association of Theatre Owners. These are the people, like me, that get to make the decisions as to what kind of popcorn popper to buy, which seat to buy and which projector system I can't afford to place in my theatre. Theatre managers don't make these kinds of decisions.

If there were a National Association for Theatre Managers (NATM), then they could all gather, debate the finer points of staff discipline, and see a few films.

However, as a manager, you can always swing the cheap ticket to Las Vegas, Stay at the Bourbon Street for $50 per night and finagle a Trade Show Pass from one of your buddies who work for Dolby, your cinema supplier or candy rep.

Yea, I used to bitch and whine about not getting to go to ShoWest when I was a theatre manager too. You can crash just about any party you want, you just have to show up.

Before you start thinking of me as a heartless bastard, we are planning on taking a manager to ShoWest this year.

I don't think you're a dick for your post.. really, I don't.

HOWEVER,

If someone, such as myself, has stuck it out in this business for 16 years and still has a good interest in what he/she does, I think it would be nice to be able to at least *compete* to go amongst your own fellow managers. Most wouldnt' give two shits anyway, as this is merely a paycheck to begin with, which is one reason our industry is in the overall shpae it's in currently. The rest, like myself, would use the opportunity to learn what else is out there, products, companies, etc... Contacts and knowledge, you just never know when they may help you out..

(It wasn't really curiosity that killed the cat.. it was lack of foresight as to what would happen next!)

Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond my control, I will not be in attendance this year. That will be good news to some, and bad news to others. That's just the way the pickle squeezes.

Those who go...have a great time. Attendance is well worth the hassle if you can attend. You will find great people there.

Hmmm... a theatre company sending people to an industry convetion. Sounds like a legitimate expense to me. You can even call it a "tax write off" if it makes you feel better. But that doesn't mean it doesn't cost the company nearly just as much as if it wasn't a "tax write off" -- so what, you save a few percent on a few hundred dollars.

I may actually be able to make it, if I can get a pass for the day. No point in driving down to vegas from Salt Lake for one measley night binger, unless your bob maar.

And my friends Anna and Nick are coming too, and they've never been to Vegas so apparently it's up to me to give them the royal Vegas treatment... so does anybody else want to come along and watch me lose a paycheck or two playing blackjack???

Easy for you to say. I've got about a month of riding experience, or 700 miles, whichever. At any rate I dont think i'm in good enough shape for a 24 hour ride

Ah...sad sad song about the old suzuki.....I'll just say this, do NOT EVER put a stupid disc brake lock on your bike! Forgetting it that one time is a VERY hard lesson to learn, and you learn it VERY quickly.

Why is this thread not in the same forum with the other Film-Tech drink thread?

nothing like that.

I had the wheel turned coming out of my parking spot and when the lock hit the brake I dropped it. Busted the left turn signal and put a few scratched on the left side of the fairing. My foot was actually caught under the fairing holding up some of the bike, luckily there was another guy there to help get it up off the ground, otherwise I would have had to set it all the way down to get it upright. I hope Phil doesnt read that, I tried to not say "get it up".

I learned my lesson.

I hate to laugh.. but the famous 'forgot to take the Kryptonite of the rotor' has happened to many.. MANY riders.

It's happened to me, but fortunately, I remembered it before I cranked the bike. Once you get in the habit of removing it and throing it in the trunk (or around the frame spar), it becomes second nature and you'l be less apt to forget.

Good to hear that you incurred minor damage.. hell, it bruises teh ego more than anything anyway.. LOL... Rotors aren't exactly cheap either.

Another method you can use is putting the lock on your rear sprocket. I've used two locks and a Kryptonite chain at the same time in some places. Bottom line is this... If they want the bike. they will TAKE the bike. Doesn't matter if you have a pitbull with AIDS watching it.

One thing I absoluetly hate is a thief. ESPECIALLY a bike thief.

Paul, the FT drink is held in a suite at Bally's. You won't be running into any union workers or be near the trade show. If you can make it, email me and I will give you my cell phone number so you can call and find out the specific room.
