One of our employees spelled Shrek 2 "Shreck 2" took her awhile to figure it out too. Last one I can think of be fore that was "barbershop" being spelled "Babershop" this too took the person awhile to figure out the correct spelling.
What's the story behind the second photo?

Best marquee "mistake" I ever saw was when one of our ushers put up "Monster Balls" instead of "Monsters Ball". He had already put the ladder and tiles away, and had to drag everything back out, so it might have been an honest mistake...

Come see monster balls on our biggest screen! You wont believe your eyes!

Recently there was the whole Shreck 2 misspelling on some sold out signs in our box office. Delving into the past there was the time a manager tried to thread a movie tail first.

We had a marquee kid once who put up

FRESH HORES

(instead of "horses")

In a semi-related note, a competing theatre near us on their recording, says Harry Potter and the Prisoner of "Azikban."

P.S. I've been to the theatre pictured on top of this thread...that marquee is way cool at night!

Last summer...
Our electronic marquis said we were playing "Swimming Poo"

I forget where I was at the time when I was driving by a theater that either had someone playing a joke with the marquee, or someone swung by at night and vandalised it, either way it was advertising for "Harry Pothead"

In an old complex I used to work in we had LED text signs above the door of each cinema that only had 15 spaces of text visible at any one time, so the film title had to be abbreviated so that we could also fit in the classification at the end of the title, if the text was longer than 15 spaces the sign would scroll (we used to use it for advertising quite a bit). Anyway, we were showing an Australian film called Occational Coarse Language, which was abrreviated to Coarse Lang. M for the sign, which had too many spaces so the sign would scroll leaving "arse lang. M" over the door.

I hate those stupid "digital" airport-style marquees that cut off the titles. How the hell do they get theaters to install these? "Digital is better, see?"

When I was at ShowEast, I went to the silly little booth that had all of the different kinds of "digital" marquees. Even on their demo display, it was cutting off letters. I asked the rep how this was better than mylars, and the quick and cheerful answer was that I would never have to buy mylars again! Well, being the creative smartass that I am, I took all of the titles they had up on the board (20 or so) and "charged" them $0.25 for every letter missing that made the display look "ghetto" -- the cost added up to that of a couple mylars. And I'd still have to buy the display instead of just a box with a flourescent light.

The rep saw I wasn't interested and didn't want to talk anymore. [Smile]

I showed up for work one day after it stormed all night and noticed that the wind blew a few letters off of the marquee. One of the movies that we had at the time was Spice World. The E fell off and it became...

I have 3 marquee stories, All from theatres that Mark has (does?) worked at.

On the outside, reading across the titles it read "Freddy Got Fingered One Night at McCools"

Inside the same theatre reading down the one column of 4 titles it read:
Josie and The
Pussycats
Blow
Pokemon

At another building, they would split titles between the sign at the front of the hall and over the door. When a film strring Dolly Parton was in house 6 and another starring Wesley Snipes was in house 7, the hall sign read:

Straight
White Men

Not too funny but the one I remember for us was...How Stella Got Her Groove On was rated R so of course since it's a long title our marque read:

How Stella Got Groover

Our marque was quite low to the ground by the main highway so it was always a joy to get to work and notice someone had spelled out something like "Fu(K YOU" or some other 'oh so funny' phrase from out letters.

A few weeks ago we were printing tickets for "Women, though art loose"

We were thinking about making our box cashiers put a d on the end of every ticket but we decided just to ignore it and hope customers did the same.

So I'm a new assistant manager at my theater. First weekend closing.
So I'm sitting in the office talking with the manager that opened that day, and I hear the ticket printer start printing ticket after ticket. I'm like, what the heck.
So I go out there and the cashier has a string of tickets in her hand.
I'm like, what is going on?
She wanted to see how many the program would allow to be sold and HAD to hit the enter button but claims it started all by itself.
So I had exactly 28 tickets to the 6:50 In Her Shoes.
Naturally no one came for the rest of the night.
And to make matters worse the voids didn't even show up on the film report so now fox is going to be like. Hey, we're $207 short.

We won't even get into how badly I closed either!
What a great weekend!

Summer of 1999 here is what our two marquee persons did on purpose when doing marquee one night

IRON GIANT
DICK

Hmmm I almost had one of my employees fall for the old technicolor gag. I had her convinced we were out and needed some to run the projector so I needed her to call the AMC down the street because all the Kerasotes were out of technicolor. She made it all the way to the phone to call when she asked our complex if we were really out. Complex told her no and laughed and told her it was just a joke.

We also like to play a joke on our new hires. Their first night working we like to come up to them and tell them that the ushers need help cleaning theater #17. They grab their broom and butlers and start heading down the 9-16 hallway and a few minutes later they are coming back to us asking us where theater 17 is.

This isn't staff related but -- we just got a tentative bookings sheet from our booker and on Dec. 21 we have penciled in:

FUN WITH DICK

I suppose some marquees around the country with space issues will sport a similar title. [Cool]

Back when I was still a floor staffer, my theatre had gotten booked with My Big Fat Greek Wedding. I was putting it up on the marquee and had gotten "Big Fat Greek" up when a customer stopped me and remarked that he was Greek and this offended him, and he'd be speaking to the manager. Needless to say, the managers never heard from him.

When I first started we had "FREE KIDS SHOWS" painted on the windows, well I had to clean it off, so that day all I was able to get off was Shows, so now we had "FREE KIDS" painted on our window, and for some reason no one cleaned it off for almost a week

We have the LED signs above our auditorium doors.

Recently we ran a bollywood movie called "No Entry " (so our LED signs for that auditorium said "No Entry")

We had a few customers come up and ask questions like "Why are people not allowed in there?"

Bumppity.

Our theatre once again got stuck with 12 prints for 10 screens (and 10 spots on the marquee). I ran out of ratings tags, so I grouped titles by their ratings and put them on the same lines with as much space between the titles as possible. However, this didn't stop the chuckles, and we got mentioned in the local weekly entertainment paper!

‘Invincible Worms’!

Editorial Team

CFN is always amused at the conundrum facing local multiplexes when they are forced to cram more movie titles onto their marquees than for which they have space. Their simple solution: Two titles to one line.

Sometimes the results are unintentionally hilarious (who can forget Brixton Square Cinema’s classic “Focker Sideways”?). But Penn Square actually might drum up more than usual business with their current showing — according to the sign facing Northwest Expressway — of the summer blockbuster “Invincible Worms.”

Now, CFN has little interest in seeing either the Mark Wahlberg football feel-gooder “Invincible” or the snuff film that is “How to Eat Fried Worms.” But our curiosity would be totally off-the-charts insane for catching a flick that actually was about unconquerable slimy things that can neither be smashed, sautéed or otherwise sullied. You just know it would star Samuel L. Jackson.

Bonus points to whichever Penn Square employee gets to put up those blocky black letters for not marrying Jackson’s latest to a certain Oliver Stone film to get “Snakes on a WTC.”

I had an employee advertise "Bulletproof Munk" on our marquee one time. When I pointed out his mistake he told me "It sounds like it should be spelled that way". I said okay, then proceeded to ask him how he spells monkey.

I had a staff member wander over to the managers kiosk (our equivelant of a water cooler) and I looked at her and said "Are you on the doorstand?" And she said "yep!" And then I said, "No, you're standing here..." She glared, I grinned, and she then went back to her post.

Yeah, I'm a mean supervisor.

My favorite truncated name was our tickets when we had Bringing Down the House. The ticket line ran out of space and it said "Bringing Down the Ho"

Bob, I feel your pain.
I've got this kid that "follows the energy" away from her post.
My projectionist and I turned around half way to the booth because I noticed someone was following me, turns out it's my concession attendant. One door and 12 yards away from the counter!
Supervisor or not though you came off a little harsh there.
Unfortunately it's not legal to tie people to their posts...However I wonder about roping them off...
